We’re Going Under The Influence, Airing Our Album of The Week, and Offering Up New Live Lukas Nelson & POTR on This Thursday, April 29, 2021

Good Morning, Folks! As I return to retail hell on this fine day (and hopefully not for long), we’ve got some great programming coming up in my absence. The Music Mermaid will handle the details.

We have Lukas Nelson & Promise of The Real up in the early evening.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Under The Influence: Various Artists

We’ve all done it. Some of us do it every day. Functioning under the influence, that is. This great multi-artist playlist features Glenn Frey, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Donovan. The Traveling Wilburys, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, John Lee Hooker, Neil Young, The Temptations, and more!

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Damn The Torpedoes! by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

We’re winding down on our Album of The Week. We’ll have one more airing of this fantastic album on Saturday. When you roll your butts out of bed on Sunday, there will be a new selection. So, get in on this now! The Heartbreakers’ breakout album for sure. And the rest, as they say, is history.

7:00 p.m. Lukas Nelson & Promise of The Real Live at The Boathouse, Newport News, Virginia, June 14, 2018 NEW!

This is a great little band, and you know it’s great when a legend like Neil Young takes them on the road with him. They can stand on their own, however, and this is your chance to see that for yourself.

Tune us in, people. We’re not-for-profit. We accept no advertising and we sure don’t employ long-winded DJ’s. The Music Mermaid is silent but deadly in her selections.

It’s a Mudcrutch Monday, We Have ‘Live’ Jesse Winchester, and The Doors In The Spotlight, April 26, 2021

Ah, yes, another week begins in The Mermaid Lounge and we’ve got some great programming, including new ‘live’ Jesse Winchester, a great singer-songwriter who is sometimes forgotten.

Singer-songwriter Jesse Winchester, a man who lives through the voices of others will live through his own today.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Mudcrutch Live at The Fonda Theatre, West Hollywood, June 26, 2016

This was the same tour that brought Tom Petty’s “other band” through Boston’s House of Blues. I will forever kick myself in the ass for missing this opportunity, but I thought I had many more in the future. Sadly, I was wrong. Mudcrutch may not be The Heartbreakers, but they are a great band nonetheless.

3:00 p.m. Jesse Winchester Live at The Bijou Cafe, Philadelphia, May 26, 1977 NEW!

I’ve seen Jesse Winchester twice in my lifetime, both times as an opening act for Emmylou Harris. When Emmylou breaks into Defying Gravity, few know that the song was written by Winchester. He has made a lot of music over the yeears, and he is appreciated here in The Mermaid Lounge, where we have just added his catalogue to our general rotation and will feature some of his live performances.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Doors

I’ve been missing these crazy guys lately. In just four years before Morrison’s untimely death, the left us a hell of a musical catalogue. Tonight we put them In the Spotlight.

Tune us in. You won’t regret it. Join your friends from Germany, Poland, Norway, the Faroe Islands, Canada, and points beyond!

It’s The Ladies’ Day Out in The Mermaid Lounge Today, and the Foo Fighters Own Our Album of The Week, Sunday, April 18, 2021

Happy Sunday, People! It’s a fine day here in The Mermaid Lounge as we close our broadcasting week in fine style. We feature the new Foo Fighters album early on, then turn it over to the ladies for the rest of the programming day!

“Medicine at Midnight” by the Foo Fighters is our Album of The Week.

Here’s the lay of the land:

12:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

This playlist was put together to show our commitment to the women of music, pioneers in their own right. It’s amazing to me how women continue to be put at the back of the bus in the rock n’roll music world. Carole King, a woman who has written many songs and made many people famous, and who has to her credit one of the biggest selling albums of all time in Tapestry, is just making the hall of fame this year. Linda Ronstadt, who has been singing since the sixties, and who was undeniably the Queen of Rock during the seventies, was not inducted until 2014. The Rock n’ Roll Hall of Shame is a fucking joke.

Here we are in 2021, and you’d be hard pressed to hear Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Aretha Franklin, or any other woman of their generation on any music station as part of a standard rotation. I call bullshit. Misogeny is alive and well in the music world, but not in The Mermaid Lounge.

9:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Medicine At Midnight by Foo Fighters NEW!

The band born from the demise of Nirvana gives us this week’s Album of the Week. Originally planned for 2020, it was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The band’s tenth studio album represents a departure from their usual sound. Dave Grohl also has some interesting commentary on the goings on that occurred during the recording of the album, which you can read here.

On that note, tune us in. We’re here 24/7 and we are not for profit (and not for sale). We are non-intrusive. We never ask for a credit card or your personal information. We don’t track, spindle or mutilate. Enjoy your Sunday.

We Have ‘Live’ Linda Ronstadt and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young On The Docket for Friday, April 16, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! Here we are in The Mermaid Lounge with two live performances that we’ve not heard in quite some time. We hope you will enjoy the light programming and the Music Mermaid’s Open Stream today.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young: One of the greatest supergroups ever.

Here’s your Friday line-up:

12:00 p.m. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young: Live in ’69

A compilation of the songs sung during CSNY’s 1969 road performances is on tap for today. We haven’t heard this playlist in quite some time.

5:00 p.m. Linda Ronstadt Live at The Troubadour, West Hollywood, California, March 17, 1976

A performance by Linda Ronstadt at the famed Troubadour Club in West Hollywood. This was during Linda’s early career when she was just about to burst into the forefront of the rock world. Enjoy.

Beyond this, it’s all on The Music Mermaid today. She’ll be your guide through our 27,000 song library. She always chooses wisely. And she is known to pick up a ‘playlist’ or two along the way, so pay attention!

Saturday Brings Us Warren Zevon Live in Boston, A New ‘Live Dead’, The Soul Sisters, and the Final Airing of our Album of The Week, April 10, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists. It’s a great menu today here in The Mermaid Lounge, where music is the drug, and we’ve got something for everyone.

We start the day with Warren Zevon in Boston.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Warren Zevon Live at Club Metro, Boston, Massachusetts, September 29, 1982 NEW!

I did not catch this particular show, but I had the pleasure of seeing Warren Zevon live at The Berklee Performance Center around the same time. His plane was late, the show started two hours late, but he was on his game. Truly one of the most tortured souls on the planet, but one amazingly talented guy and a hell of a singer-songwriter.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Saturate Before Using by Jackson Browne FINAL AIRING!

The final airing of this great album is at 3:00 p.m. today. Tomorrow when you roll out of bed, there will be a brand new selection gracing the front page of the blog.

6:00 p.m. The Soul Sisters, Volume One: Various Artists

We’ve got a little bit of soul for you today, brought to you by Aretha Franklin, The Marvelettes, The Staple Singers (featuring the great Mavis Staples), The Shirelles, Barbara Lewis, Little Eva, Fontella Bass, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Kim Weston, Carla Thomas, and many more!

10:00 p,m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at Memorial Coliseum, Sacramento, California, August 12, 1972 NEW!

Another new performance from the road by the world’s premier jam band! Another one of thousands of Grateful Dead performances captured for music history.

Tune us in. It’s Saturday, the first official full day of the weekend. This is the place to be!

It’s Sunday in The Lounge and Jackson Browne Owns Our Album of The Week. We Also Offer Up Volume 1 of Our Sixties Rotation, April 4, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! For those who celebrate, Happy Easter. I generally do because it’s a time when I can be with my family, and that’s what matters. It’s cultural with our family. But it is not a requirement to listen to great music!

We have five hours of uninterrupted Sixties Music today with Volume One!

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Saturate Before Using by Jackson Browne NEW!

Funny factoid: The album is mistakenly called Saturate Before Using because the cover design was made to look like a water bag. It was intended to be Jackson Browne. At the time of its recording Jackson did not have a record contract, then he sent a recording of Jamaica Say You Will to David Geffen and he began hunting. He started his own record label, Asylum, and signed Browne to a contract (along with many others, including Linda Ronstadt). This brilliant album is Browne’s debut, and birthed two hit singles, Doctor My Eyes and Rock Me On The Water. Jackson Browne is now considered one of the legendary singer-songwriters of his generation, residing in both the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume One: Various Artists

Yes, there is a difference between volume one and volume two. This volume focuses more on the earlier part of the sixties, although there is some crossover on both and we won’t deny that. It was done purposely. On this volume you’ll hear The Beatles, Mary Wells, Del Shannon, The Searchers, Carole King, Harry Nilsson, The Dave Clark Five, Johnny Rivers, The Box Tops, Dusty Springfield, The Yardbirds, Blues Image, Jimmy Ruffin, The Supremes, The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye & Kim Weston, Simon & Garfunkel and many more. A total of 98 songs uninterrupted.

The Easter Bunny just phoned me. He’s tuning in himself today now that he’s delivered all the shit required of him. He hopes you will too.

It’s Another Monday in Paradise With the Rascals, Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers” Project, and Some Pretty Sweet Soul, March 8, 2021

Good Morning, Radio Sweethearts! It’s another Monday but, hey, the sun is out and that’s a plus. We’ve got some great music programming for today sprinkled in with that wild and crazy Open Stream.

We happily revisit Tom Petty’s massive “Wildflowers” project today.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The (Young) Rascals

Are they The Rascals? Yes. Are they The Young Rascals? Yes. We’re quibbling here. The Rascals were one of the finest bands on the planet back in the day. Today, we put them In the Spotlight. For your listening pleasure, of course.

3:00 p.m. Tom Petty’s Wildflowers Project: All The Rest

It has been a while since the release of the Wildflowers Project, and we’re going to start revisiting it intermittently today. We begin with All The Rest, or the songs that didn’t make the album. Of course, some of these songs appeared somewhere later down the road. However, some were not heard until this project was released, like Leave Virginia Alone and Confusion Wheel. We have those here today.

7:00 p.m. Sweet Soul Music 1965: Various Artists

Some early soul here with the likes of Solomon Burke, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Fontella Bass, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Joe Tex, Lee Dorsey, Roy Head, Don Covay, Booker T & The MGs (the original Stax Records house band), Kim Weston, and more!

Please, spare me from having to tell you we’re totally free and operate outside the system yet again. I’m getting tired of saying this. I simply think Americans don’t bother to stop and smell the roses unless, of course, they are paying for it through the nose. The beauty of capitalism is that people buy into it.
