We’ve got another new soundboard recording of a great Dead live show here for your listening pleasure. But then again, the fact remains that every show sounds “new” when it comes to The Grateful Dead. (And by the way, no matter what they tell you, The Grateful Dead aren’t The Grateful Dead without Jerry Garcia.)

7:00 p.m. Little Feat Live at The Orpheum Theatre, Boston, Massachusetts, October 31, 1975

One of the greatest bands of all time is live from Boston in this set, and I’m pleased to say that I was in attendance for this one. They’re a little bit swamp music, a little bit blues, a little bit country and a whole lot of rock n’ roll. They’re also a Mermaid Lounge favorite.

Before, in between, and after our programming we’re on wide Open Stream 24/7. We’ve got so much music you’ll be hard pressed to hear a repeat in a given day. Emmylou Harris’ career began back in 1969 and she is still on the move. During that time she has won 14 Grammy Awards, the Polar Music Prize (and many other awards too numerous to mention here), been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008, and was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Harris is rightfully credited with making country more accessible to a wider audience, and today we put her In the Spotlight.

When I was young and dumb, I just assumed that these guys came straight out of the Louisiana Bayou. In fact, what we have are four guys from Berkeley who sounded like they came straight out of the Louisiana Bayou. They also just happened to make some of the greatest rock n’ roll on the planet. We love these guys here in The Lounge. Today we have the live from The Fillmore for your listening pleasure. Cook up some crawfish and shrimp and enjoy.

Gregory (Saxophone). This is widely considered the best of Cotton’s live recordings.

This seemed like the perfect time to make this long-awaited spotlight happen, and I promise it will be updated. We are still in the process of adding Marcia Ball’s music to our rotation. Marcia Ball is a kick-ass blues singer and a piano master. She has been around for a while, but doesn’t get the attention she so richly deserves. Born and raised in Louisiana, her style has been described as “where Texas stomp rock and Louisiana swamp blues meet.” You’re going to like her if you don’t already know her.

CCR delivers their special brand of swamp music in what is the final day of The Fillmore West’s existence under Bill Graham. It’s hard to believe these guys were born and raised in Berkeley, California. Their ‘born on the bayou’ sound was truly amazing. One of the best bands to ever exist.
