We continue on with Tom Petty features during Tom Petty Month. Tom Petty always envisioned The Heartbreakers sitting around on chairs playing the blues in their old age. Life (and death) has a way of getting in the way of things, but the band made some great blues songs while they were together. We’ve got them here today.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Excitable Boy by Warren Zevon

Our second airing of this great album that doesn’t have a bad song on it. Forget the hits, although they were great enough. The album also has Accidentally Like a Martyr, Nighttime in the Switching Yard, and my favorite, Lawyers, Guns and Money.

Louisiana Blues gives us both the jazzy New Orleans-style blues and the swampy blues encompassing the Cajun/Zydeco influence

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Just A Stones Throw Away by Valerie Carter

We think this week’s Album of The Week fits in just fine on this Tuesday Bluesday because Valerie Carter’s first solo album is just a little bit of everything, including just a bit bluesy. She’s got the perfect voice for it.

7:00 p.m. The Best of Louisiana Blues, Volume Two: Various Artists

You’ll hear more of Clarence Frogman Henry, Slim Harpo, and Muddy Waters in our second set, but you’ll also hear Smiley Lewis, The Big Bopper, Earl King, Cookie & The Cupcakes, Rod Bernard, Frankie Ford, Joe Jones, and Big Boy Myles.

It’s A Beatles Kind of Day As We Close Out The Month; We’ve Also Got The Wilburys With the AOW, and Our ‘On The Map’ Playlist Later, Thursday, September 30, 2021

Good Morning, Beatles Lovers (and I, for one, am one)! It’s a Beatles kind of day here today in The Mermaid Lounge, and with good reason! Read on!

In spite of the rumors, The Beatles were still loose and enjoying each other at the end.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. The Beatles: The Let It Be Sessions

October is a big month. The 50th Anniversary 5-CD set of Let It Be will be released on October 15 replete with remixes (McCartney was unhappy with Phil Spector’s versions of some of the songs; and I agree), outtakes, alternate versions, and other goodies. Peter Jackson’s six-hour Let It Be documentary will be released on October 15 as well, with the companion book, The Beatles: Get Back, coming on October 12.

We’ve had this little gem for a while now and have played it before. We thought this would be an appropriate way to kick out the September jams as we get ready for October.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: The Traveling Wilburys, Volume One

Back with our next-to-last airing of this great album. October will also be Tom Petty Month here in The Mermaid Lounge. And you’ll hear plenty of the Wilburys as well during this time.

7:00 p.m. On The Map: Various Artists

We close out the day’s programming with our ‘On The Map’ playlist with cities, towns and locations in either the title, lyrics, or both. It’s Tuesday Bluesday with Eric Clapton & Friends, Stevie Ray Vaughn “Live” and Our Album of The Week, September 28, 2021

Good Morning, Bluesologists! We have a great blues line-up today sandwiched around our latest Album of The Week.

11:00 a.m. Eric Clapton & Friends: Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, & Joe Cocker, Live at Royal Albert Hall, UK, September 20, 1983

Back in 1983, a bunch of musicians got together to play a benefit concert at Royal Albert Hall to raise money for multiple sclerosis. The event was organized by Ronnie Lane of the band Faces, who was a victim of the disease himself. The result was a great set of 18 songs of straight-up blues and blues-rock numbers. Even better, Clapton, Page and Beck were all once lead guitarists for The Yardbirds, but this was the first time they’d ever been on stage together. Many other great musicians were also involved in this benefit. You can read more about it here.

7:00 p.m. Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble Live at The Bluebird Lounge, Ft. Worth, TX, September 30, 1979

There’s not much more you can say about Stevie Ray Vaughan that hasn’t already been said. He was on the road continually during 1978 and 1979, and one stop was The Bluebird Lounge. It is believed that the owner of the place, Robert “Bluebird” Ealey was sitting in on guitar and vocals.

Hell, it’s Tuesday Bluesday here in the lounge. Before you know it, we’ll be coming up on Blues Week here (sometime during the winter when we need it most). We’re out there sourcing some new stuff now. This is a great time to acclimate yourself to our station.

A collection of live songs from various locations from the master of the blues harmonica, James Cotton, and his great band: Charles Calmese (Bass), Kenny Johnson (Drums), Mike “Captain Z” Zaitchik (Keyboards), Matt “Guitar” Murphy (Lead Guitar), and George T. Gregory (Saxophone). This is widely considered the best of Cotton’s live recordings.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Grievous Angel by Gram Parsons

We take a break and delve into country-rock here with the second airing of Grievous Angel.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Marcia Ball NEW!

This seemed like the perfect time to make this long-awaited spotlight happen, and I promise it will be updated. We are still in the process of adding Marcia Ball’s music to our rotation. Marcia Ball is a kick-ass blues singer and a piano master. She has been around for a while, but doesn’t get the attention she so richly deserves. Born and raised in Louisiana, her style has been described as “where Texas stomp rock and Louisiana swamp blues meet.” You’re going to like her if you don’t already know her.

3:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at the Vic Theatre, Chicago, April 19, 2003

One of my all-time favorite Heartbreaker performances here from a great venue. I could go off here and extol the virtues of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and what they contributed to music, but I don’t need to do that. All you need to do is LISTEN.

7:00 p.m. Eva Cassidy Recorded Live at Blues Alley, Georgetown, January 2-3, 1996

When I mention Eva Cassidy to people, they look at me perplexed. Many haven’t heard of her, and that’s because she was just coming into her own when she died of cancer at the age of 33. For those of you who don’t know Eva Cassidy and her music, she was a singer, guitarist and pianist who used her beautiful soprano voice to interpret jazz, folk, country and blues songs.

A great collection of live Bluesbreakers songs recorded live at the BBC between 1965 and 1967, with the great John Mayall at the helm. It also includes two previously unreleased songs from the Old Grey Whistle Test performances, So Much To Do and Taxman Blues.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Blue by Joni Mitchell

The second airing of one of the greatest recorded albums in popular music history by the great Joni Mitchell, written and recorded during a very turbulent time in her personal life.

7:00 p.m. Muddy Waters: The Johnny Winter Sessions (1976-1981)

Johnny Winter assembled a great backing band for Muddy Waters — a giant of the Chicago blues genre — during these recording sessions, including Pinetop Perkins on keyboards and James Cotton on harp. All the great blues standards are here, Mannish Boy, Baby Please Don’t Go, Good Morning Little School Girl, and even Champagne and Reefer.

The second airing of this great album. We inject a bit of good old rock n’ roll (with a hint of jazz, of course) in the middle of all those blues.

Generations of guitar-loving kids are still discovering the magic of this guy. He has been described as a man of simple taste with impeccable style. We cover his music from both his time with Double Trouble and as a solo artist.
