We Close the Work Week In Style With The Beatles Top 100 and Our ‘By The Numbers’ Playlist, Friday, August 20, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! We close the week by giving you the Beatles Top 100 songs and our multi-artist ‘By The Numbers’ playlist.

Today it’s The Beatles Top 100 to open the day’s programming!

Here’s today’s musical programming:

11:00 a.m. The Beatles Top 100 NEW!

We have two house bands. The Beatles is one of those house bands. (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers is the other.) This list is in no numerical order. It was done very scientifically, of course. Some Beatle fans (including me) sat around getting stoned and just threw out titles. If we agreed, we kept the song on the list. We scrubbed the ones we didn’t agree on. That’s about as scientific as we can get at this stage of the game. Some day when I am indeed fully retired, we’ll open this up to listeners by email and take votes. But for now, this is what you get. We like this list a lot.

The list itself will appear under the Playlist tab on the blog before I head out to work at 10:00 a.m. Check it out.

Another great British band here, although somewhat underrated in my opinion given all of the great bands that came out of England during the British Invasion years. Tom Petty often said that Ray Davies is an unheralded songwriter, and I agree with him.

Kate Taylor is back with her first new album, 50 years after Sister Kate was released, and it was worth the wait! Produced by Peter Asher (formerly of Peter & Gordon), legendary manager of Linda Ronstadt, and friend of The Beatles, it’s a great collection of songs by a woman who is part of a very musical family. Sister Kate does her family name proud.

We’re back with more than five uninterrupted hours of songs from across the pond. Today we give you the musical genius of George Harrison as a member of The Beatles, as a solo artist, and as the infamous Nelson Wilbury. The Traveling Wilburys, the greatest Supergroup of all time, was Harrison’s brainchild. They made some of the best music on the planet.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Standing in The Doorway by Chrissie Hynde

While Eric Clapton and Van Morrison whined over being locked down (and continue to whine; a characteristic I dislike in people), Chrissie Hynde made it count. This is a fantastic album of lesser-known Bob Dylan covers. Right now it’s our official Album of the Year.

7:00 p.m. The Kinks Live at The Palladium, New York, December 31, 1980

The battling Davies brothers also shared the spotlight in one of the finest rock n’ roll bands in history. Tonight we have some live Kinks for you. It’s been a while since we aired this one.

They don’t call him “Wicked” Wilson Pickett for nothing. Wilson Pickett was a major player in establishing the genre of American soul music, with more than 50 songs making the R & B charts. And many of those songs crossed over into the Billboard Hot 100. It’s about time he’s recognized in this venue.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Old Yellow Moon by Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell NEW!

This fantastic 2013 release won the Grammy Award for the Best Americana Album. It was Harris’ 13th Grammy. The album itself was her twenty-seventh studio release, and Crowell’s tenth. Although they originally met in 1974, it took them until 2012 to record an album together. I saw the tour promoting this album, and the musical chemistry between Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell was amazing.

It only took the pair two years to release a follow up album called The Travelin’ Kind, and we’ll be featuring that as a future Album of The Week.

3:00 p.m. The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

This was the very first playlist we ever put together back when we started, and it features The Beatles, The Dave Clark Five, Johnny Rivers, Bobbie Gentry, Little Eva, The Searchers, The Who, The Supremes, Bob Dylan, The Hollies, The Turtles, Petula Clark, Barry McGuire, The Grateful Dead, The Rolling Stones, Gerry & The Pacemakers, The Kinks, and many more! It’s Sunday and The British Are Coming! Linda Ronstadt & The Stone Poneys Own The Album of The Week, May 9, 2021

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Linda Ronstadt, The Stone Poneys & Friends, Volume III NEW!

A very young Linda Ronstadt and her band, The Stone Poneys, released their third and final album on April 29, 1968. Capitol Records was beginning to realize Ronstadt’s potential and put her front and center on the cover, which would increase tensions in the band. On this album, she began to branch out, choosing songs written by the great Tim Buckley and Laura Nyro. The following year, she would release her first solo album. The rest, as they say, is history. Tensions notwithstanding, Kenny Edwards would become a fixture in her solo backup band for many years.

We bring back one of our best long playlists today featuring bands from the British Invasion right on up to Queen. Good Morning, Kids! It’s a day of rest here, and we’re keeping it simple with the music that inspired the radio station and Jesse Winchester owns our Album of The Week.

We kick it all off with Jesse Winchester’s Nothing But A Breeze. Winchester is a guy who gets no respect, in my opinion. I’m quite happy I don’t pay a whit of attention to music critics, frankly. The rap on this one was that he covered three songs (they weren’t his own compositions). And? What’s wrong with that. Plenty of people have covered his songs, Emmylou Harris being one of them. Undoubtedly one of my favorite albums, so enjoy this one.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two: Various Artists

The music that inspired me to start this radio station takes us into the evening. You’ll hear Janis Joplin, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Byrds, The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, The Who, The Searchers, The Dave Clark Five, Bob Dylan, The Band, Cream, Derek & The Dominos, and many others. Just tune in, turn on, and drop out.

It’s Our Monthly Visit With The British, and Carly Simon’s “Hotcakes” is Our Album of The Week, Sunday, April 11, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! It’s another fine Sunday here in The Mermaid Lounge (although, I confess that I am writing this earlier than usual). We have a new album of the week, and we feature our five-hour British Invasion playlist today.

Here’s today’s simple but satisfying line-up:

12:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Hotcakes by Carly Simon NEW!

Hotcakes was Carly Simon’s fourth studio album, released by Elektra Records in 1974. She recorded the album while she was pregnant with her first child, and I have to say that it’s one of the best albums on the planet. It is also one of the hottest-sellers of her career. Unfortunately for Carly, Elektra released two other albums that year, one was Planet Waves by Dylan and the other was Court & Spark by Joni Mitchell. That kept Hotcakes off the top spot. It peaked at number three.

The album generated two hits, Mockingbird, which she recorded with her then-husband James Taylor, and the other was Haven’t Got Time For The Pain. However, I have to agree with David Geffen’s assessment that Forever My Love was the finest song she ever recorded.

Once again, we give you more than five hours of great music from across the pond, from the British Invasion bands up through the mid eighties. You’ll hear The Clash, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Searchers, Lulu, The Dave Clark Five, Them (featuring Van Morrison), Electric Light Orchestra, The Kinks, Led Zeppelin, Cream, The Spencer Davis Group, The Who, and then some.
