The Doors influenced  music in immense ways in a very short period of time. Who knows what could have come our way down the road. Morrison was, without a doubt, a poet. And the band was really good. The whole package, gone before we knew it. The Doors actually had two album releases in 1967, their debut album (The Doors) and Strange Days (featured yesterday).

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: Are You Experienced? by The Jimi Hendrix Experience

With one album, Hendrix went from struggle to stardom. This album is heralded as one of the most amazing debuts in rock history.

7:00 p.m.     The Best of The Summer of Love! Their Satanic Majesties Request by The Rolling Stones  NEW!

The Stones’ only foray into psychedelic music before returning to their roots was not one of my favorite efforts. However, it was the natural progression at the time, and to leave the album out would be egregious. (And any album that has She’s A Rainbow on it can’t be all bad.) I just thought the Stones felt uncomfortable with the genre more than anything. Contributing to this was the fact that the entire recording process was a literal shitshow. Jerry Garcia was born on August 1, 1942, and he passed away on August 9, 1995 at the age of 53. Today in his honor we replay a Live Dead show from the Boston Music Hall on June 9, 1976.

Literally, one of the most bombastic debuts in rock music history. With one album, Jimi Hendrix went from struggling artist to gamechanger. His unique style would change the world of psychedelic rock forever.

The music released during 1967 was, literally, a cultural smorgasbord. It was musical nirvana from Haight-Ashbury all the way to my little street in Medford, where my friends and I lay in the driveway that summer with a transistor listening to WMEX. Back in the day, AM was king.

When Mudcrutch took to the stage, it was as if Tom Petty never had another band. They were that good. This is a rare live bootleg, so don’t miss it.

Good Morning, Ungovernables! It’s a very special new Album of the Week that starts today! It begins our Summer of Love experience here in The Mermaid Lounge!

From now until the end of the  month, we’ll be celebrating the most important cultural aspect of the Summer of Love, the music. It begins today with our Album of the Week!

11:00 a.m.   Album of the Week: Are You Experienced? by the Jimi Hendrix Experience   NEW!

The U.S. release of this groundbreaking Hendrix album came on August 23, 1967, right in the thick of the Summer of Love, and it met with both critical and commercial success from the start. To this date, it is considered one of the most powerful debuts in rock music history, and signaled a new direction in psychedelic music. 

3:00 p.m.     Echoes From The Canyon: Various Artists

Another amazing musical experience that began in the sixties and continued on: The Laurel Canyon experience with The Byrds, The Mamas & The Papas, The Beach Boys, and The Buffalo Springfield, for starters. You will hear them and many others if you tune in at 3:00 p.m.

7:00 p.m.     The Beach Boys: The Smile Sessions

Although this was released by the Beach Boys in 2011, it chronicles the original plans for the Smile album, the Beach Boys planned successor to the Pet Sounds album. Though the original album was abandoned and remains unfinished, the first 19 tracks of The Smile Sessions approximate what it might have sounded like.

This concert was originally broadcast on January 3, 1988, and was shot entirely in black and white. Hence, the name. By any standards this was a great night, with Orbison joined on stage by Tom Waits, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, k.d. lang, and many others. A splendid time was had by all.

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: All Things Must Pass by George Harrison  FINAL AIRING!

We bid farewell to All Things Must Pass, George Harrison’s unbelievable first solo post-Beatles effort. Tomorrow, it’ll be something new!

7:00 p.m.     Timeless: A Tribute to Hank Williams, Various Artists

I love these collections, where musicians have the opportunity to pay their respects to those who influenced them. With Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, Keith Richards, and more!

Stephen Stills’ musical talents and contribution cannot be denied, but his life seems to have been lived in short musical periods where his ego dictated the direction. His Manassas period was no different — short and sweet. Stills formed the band in the fall of 1971. By 1972, the band dissolved, but not before giving us some great music.

7:00 p.m.   In The Spotlight: The Music of Etta James  NEW!

Etta James once said tha the only place where she felt at home was on the stage, where she sang the blues, soul, R & B, jazz, gospel, and rock n’ roll. She is best known for hits like Tell Mama, At Last, The Wallflower, and I’d Rather go Blind.

Shawn Colvin is one of those singer-songwriters who should be bigger than she is. Her personal demons interfered with her success early on. Although she has been a solo performer since the seventies, Colvin is best recognized for her 1997 Grammy award-winner, Sunny Came Home.
