On This Keep-It-Simple Sunday It’s Crosby, Stills & Nash With the AOW, and Volume Two of ‘The Sixties Rotation’ EP, May 28, 2023

Sundays are simple: A couple of programs and a lot of wide Open Stream. Today is no exception in spite of the long weekend.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Crosby, Stills & Nash by Crosby, Stills & Nash NEW!

One of the great musical supergroups released this album in May of 1969, and it elevated them to instant stardom. This would be the only album released before they added Neil Young to the group. It spawned two Top 40 hits in Marrakesh Express and Suite: Judy Blue Eyes (for Judy Collins), but every song on this album became a CSN classic. It also shifted the music world from strictly blues-based music played on loud guitars and introduced the folk-rock sound. They opened the door for others playing the same genre.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two: Various Artists

The second volume focuses on the mid-to-late sixties with The Mamas & The Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Buffalo Springfield, Sly & The Family Stone, The Temptations, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who, Roy Orbison, Linda Ronstadt, The Byrds, Chuck Berry, James Brown, Blind Faith, The Spencer Davis Group, Elvis Presley, The Box Tops, The Doors, Marvin Gaye, B. Yes, we’ve had or share of banned music. McCartney & Wings’ Hi, Hi, Hi and Van Morrison’s Brown Eyed Girl for sexual references. The Heartbreakers’ You Don’t Know How It Feels for its reference to smoking weed. The Who’s My Generation for making fun of stuttering (what?). In addition, you’ll also hear from The Beatles, The Kinks, Paul Simon, Jimi Hendrix, The Shirelles, The Everly Brothers and more!

On This Keep-It-Simple Sunday, We’ve Got Our AOW by Buffalo Springfield and ‘The Original Sixties Rotation’ EP, May 21, 2023

Good morning, musicologists! As you know, we keep it simple on Sundays with plenty of wide Open Stream, but we do have a great new AOW and our original sixties rotation.

Here’s your simple Sunday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Buffalo Springfield by Buffalo Springfield NEW!

Although Buffalo Springfield wasn’t satisfied with this album, recorded in the summer of 1966 at Gold Star Studios, this was a groundbreaking album in many respects. Five of the songs were written by a guy named Neil Young, but he only sang lead on one of those. Richie Furay sang lead on the rest. Their first release from the album did not catch on nationally, but did make the Top 40 in Los Angeles during the month of August. However, by December, Stephen Stills’ For What It’s Worth became a national hit. The rest, as they say, is musical history. Aside from Neil Young, Stephen Stills and Richie Furay, the band was rounded out by Bruce Palmer (bass guitar) and Dewey Martin (drums, backing vocals).

3:00 p.m. The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

Our first sixties extended playlist with five uninterrupted hours of music from the early-to-mid sixties (although I am sure some songs from the latter part of that decade slipped in). Emmylou Harris returns with our Album of The Week released on February 7, 1975 (my 21st birthday). This time it’s her second studio release and the first on a major label. It is a tour de force without a doubt. She covers songs by Dolly Parton, Lennon & McCartney, Charles & Ira Louvin, and Rodney Crowell, among others. But the most beautiful song on the album is one she co-wrote with Bill Danoff, Boulder To Birmingham, written for the great Gram Parsons, who passed in 1973.

3:00 p.m. Under the Influence: Various Artists

Hell, it’s always a good day to tune in, turn on, and drop out as far as I’m concerned.
