The band finally released their first album 32 years after arriving in L.A. Disbanded by the record company, Petty formed The Heartbreakers. In 2008, he reformed Mudcrutch with the original members and released this great album. They also took to the road.

We like to keep it simple on Sundays and give you plenty of wide Open Stream with The Music Mermaid. Today we’ve got the first Mudcrutch album as our AOW to kick it off.

We start the day and a new week with the first Mudcrutch album. This is the band that left Gainesville looking for musical fortune in L.A. It didn’t work out until later as the band split and morphed into Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers (we’re happy for that part). Later in 2008, Tom Petty reunited the original band and they finally found their place in the music world, releasing two albums and going on tour. Enjoy this one. They were a fine band in their own right.

Lucinda is definitely a Lounge favorite, and this is one of our favorite albums as well. Tom Petty recognized her greatness long ago. She was opening for one of his early tours and he went out onto the stage and told the crowd that they must pay attention to her. He recognized her songwriting and storytelling greatness. She became a fixture on his tours right up until the end. Give a listen.

3:00 p.m. The Best of Reggae and Ska: Various Artists

We haven’t heard this one for a while and this seemed like a great day to hear Prince Buster, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Judy Mowatt, Bunny Wailer, Jimmy Cliff, Basil Gabbidon, Peter Tosh, The Rhythm Aces, Derrick Morgan, Laurel Aitken, Count Lasher, the Jiving Juniors, Marcia Griffiths, Rita Marley, Desmond Dekker, The I-Threes and more!

During that time, it is estimated that she has written about 3,000 songs. They have been covered by so many artists, including Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Tina Turner, Maria Muldaur, Waylon Jennings, Whitney Houston, The Incredible String Band and many more. You know, people keep talking about Whitney Houston’s cover of Parton’s I Will Always Love You, probably because it was associated with a movie. In reality, that cover is owned by Linda Ronstadt. Even Dolly says that. But I digress. This week, Dolly Parton is our featured singer-songwriter, and she’s doing the singing.

This is the second airing of our Album of The Week by singer-songwriter Karla Bonoff.

7:00 p.m. John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers Live at the BBC, London (1965-1967)

This evening we’ve got a collection of live recordings from 1965 through 1967 of John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers performing live at BBC studios. Mayall has rightfully earned the title of “Godfather of the British Blues” and has been influential for six decades. He has retired from the road now, but is still alive and kicking at 89.
