As legend has it, blues music freak Link Wyler and some of his friends who worked on the Gunsmoke TV show were on hiatus from filming. They decided to his the road to film their favorite blues singers, who happened to be barnstorming the nation with their bands. This is the result of that music obsession.

We’ve got our second airing of this great album coming up mid-afternoon as Valerie Carter displays her considerable soul and R & B side.

We haven’t heard ‘live’ Janis for a while, and this is the perfect day to do just that. This one is from The Fillmore East. We have one great blues-rock legend singing at a legendary venue.

Once again, Valerie Carter’s close friend, Kathy Kurasch, has done a masterful job keeping Carter’s legacy alive. Most of all, it’s critical to remind everyone that, while Valerie Carter wanted to remain in the background, her vocal talents made her one of the most ‘in demand’ singers of her generation. Check out her website to see the breadth of her work. She was also one of the most down-to-earth and fully-evolved humans on the planet.

Speaking of those echoes, this was Linda Ronstadt as she began her meteoric rise, just after the release of Heart Like A Wheel, and in one of the greatest music venues in popular music history. This was a starting point for many artists.

We haven’t heard this for a while, and it is definitely time to break it out into the open again. Born Ronald Clyde Crosby, our friend Jerry Jeff knew he couldn’t cut it as one of the leaders of the country outlaw movement with that name. He is best known for writing the song Mr. Bojangles, but he was much more than that. My personal favorite album is It’s A Good Night For Singin’ and my all-time favorite JJW song is Very Short Time. Like it or not, we’re all on short time here.

The Dead at Shoreline again. We’ve aired a couple of others from this venue. This particular show was a benefit for the NAACP Legal Defense & Education Fund, and was at a time when a guy named Bruce Hornsby was on keys for the band. Enjoy.

Released in 1975, Common Sense is John Prine’s fourth studio album. It was produced by Steve Cropper and recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis and Larabee Stuios in Los Angeles. The album features help from old friends Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Glenn Frey, and bassist Donald “Duck” Dunn who played in Booker T. & The MG’s with Cropper. John Prine was a master at his craft, a master storyteller with a wry sense of humor who always had something to say. His masterpiece, Angel From Montgomery, helped put Bonnie Raitt on the map.
