Brian Wilson is considered a genius in songwriting circles for many reasons, one of which is his novel approaches to pop music composition. There is absolutely no doubt that he is one of the most innovative and influential songwriters of his generation. He also happens to be the co-founder of The Beach Boys, and that is certainly what he is best known for. Today we pay him respects as both because you wouldn’t have one without the other.

But before that we’ve got a great new AOW from The Lovin’ Spoonful who, of course, were a part of that Laurel Canyon music scene!

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Hums of The Lovin’ Spoonful by The Lovin’ Spoonful NEW!

This is the band’s third studio album (and fourth overall), released in 1966 by Kama Sutra Records, and peaking at #14 on the charts. The album fulfilled the band’s desire to record in a variety of musical genres, including pop, country, jug-band, blues and folk. It was also the last full project by the original lineup. The album spawned four single releases, including the number one hit Summer In The City. Rain On The Roof, Nashvile Cats and Full Measure would also make the charts.

This particular playlist is about to undergo an upgrade, but for now, the original is still pretty great. Throughout his career, J.D. Souther has been primarily known as a songwriter who has been recorded by many artists, including The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt. Today he owns our Album of The Week because we believe he’s more than that. He’s a singer-songwriter (and his turn will be coming up soon) of extraordinary talent, and Black Rose is one of the best albums ever recorded.

11:00 a.m. Ode To Morning: Various Artists

For the first time, we had our ‘Here Comes The Night’ and ‘Ode To Morning’ EP’s fall back-to-back. We also trace his career as a solo artist, as well as with Crosby, Stills & Nash (pre-Young) his band, Manassas.

8:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Steady As She Goes by Hot Tuna NEW!

Released in 2011, this great blues-rock album was Hot Tuna’s first studio album after a string of live albums, and came after Jorma Kaukonen released his own solo album on Red House Records. When the label showed an interest in a new Hot Tuna album, Kaukonen sprang into action. It was recorded at Levon Helm’s studio (The Band), and he used the same approach that the Jefferson Airplane used in producing their albums. Kaukonen contributed six songs to this album. All the details are here.

Tonight we put Steve Winwood In the Spotlight and, yes, he will eventually get his turn as our singer-songwriter. Another Mermaid Lounge favorite here. You’ll hear his music from his days with Traffic, Blind Faith, The Spencer Davis Group and his solo career tonight.
