As Usual, It’s a Busy Saturday Here With Our ‘Folk Music From A-to-Z’ EP, The All-Girl Revue 5, the Final Wilburys Airing, and LIVE DEAD! Later, On March 19, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers! I see that the weekenders are on and The Mermaid Lounge is packed this morning! We’ve got some great music for you here to day for sure, so stick around.

Today we feature the timeless sounds of folk music where protest music flourished.

Here’s today’s line-up:

9:00 a.m. Album of The Week: The Traveling Wilburys, Volume 3 FINAL AIRING!

We begin early today with the final airing of the great second volume of Wilbury music (yes, I know it says Volume 3, but there was never a Volume 2). Tomorrow, we’ll have a brand new selection.

11:00 a.m. Folk Music From A-to-Z: Various Artists

Today we bring you the folks who brought you…folk music, and those who have continued the tradition. You’ll hear Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul & Mary, Cat Stevens, Odetta, Bruce Springsteen, Phil Ochs, Arlo Guthrie, The Beatles, Joan Baez, The Band, Eric Andersen, Tom Rush, John Prine, Judy Collins, Nanci Griffith, The Stone Poneys, The Wallflowers, Jesse Winchester, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bonnie Raitt, Simon & Garfunkel, Dave Van Ronk, and more!

7:00 p.m. The All-Girl Revue: Various Artists

Women’s History Month is still upon us, and we’re back featuring some of the women of music today with Valerie Carter, Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Judy Collins, Dusty Springfield, Aretha Franklin, Chrissie Hynde, Chi Coltrane, Petula Clark, Carole King, Jackie DeShannon, Joni Mitchell, Susan Tedeschi, Maria Muldaur, Tracy Chapman, Ann Peebles, and more!

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at Campus Stadium, UC Santa Barbara, May 25, 1974 NEW!

Right on the heels of the ladies, we’ve got another new soundboard recording of the world’s preeminent jam band, this one from the University of California at Santa Barbara.

Whew. Before, in between, and after we’ve got that great wide Open Stream courtesy of The Music Mermaid. And, as our listeners well know, she has impeccable taste in music. And did I mention we’re 100% free, no strings, no lie.

It’s a Sunny Day Out There and We’ve Got Our ‘Ode To Morning’ EP and Nanci Griffith In The Spotlight Later, Friday, March 11, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! I personally love the morning with the sun up shining into The Mermaid Lounge. It’s a perfect day to spend with our ‘Ode To Morning’ EP. Later, it’s Nanci Griffith.

In the Spotlight today is Nanci Griffith, a singer-songwriter who kept one fot in folk, and the other in country.

Here’s your musical landscape for Friday:

11:00 a.m. Old To Morning: Various Artists

We have our EP about the night time, so you know we’d have to put one together about the morning hours, and it’s pretty damned good. You’ll hear Nanci Griffith (In the Spotlight later), The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Dusty Springfield, Linda Ronstadt, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Electric Light Orchestra, Emmylou Harris, Harry Nilsson, The Wallflowers, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Norah Jones, Todd Rundgren, Jefferson Airplane, Joni Mitchell, Foreigner, Gram Parsons, Townes Van Zandt, Badfinger, Chris Hillman, Hot Tuna, Fairport Convention, B.B. King, Cat Stevens and more!

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Nanci Griffith

It sounds like marketing bullshit, but it’s the truth: Nanci Griffith was an American treasure. She was a singer-songwriter who was raised in Austin, Texas, and lived in Nashville. She kept one foot in folk music, and the other in country, and her beautiful voice was more than capable doing justice to both genres seamlessly. Nanci Griffith made many appearances on Austin City Limits beginning in 1985, and won a Grammy Award for her album, Other Voices, Other Rooms in 1994. She passed away in August of 2021 at the age of 68. If Nanci Griffith has fallen through the cracks on your musical journey, tune her in tonight.

We are here every day spinning the tunes (that’s, of course, simply for imagery in this computerized age), we’re on 24/7, and we never cost you a penny. You won’t have to “subscribe” to our service. You won’t be asked for a credit card. And we certainly will never ask you any personal information. We have our own problems here.

Welcome To Sunday With Bobbie Gentry Owning Our Album of The Week and Our ‘Ode To Morning’ EP, February 6, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’ve got a great line-up for you today as we finally focus a bit on Bobbie Gentry, a musical pioneer who is often overlooked. No more. Today is just the beginning.

Remembered for her hit “Ode To Billie Joe,” Bobbie Gentry was so much more than that. But we start there today.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Ode To Billie Joe by Bobbie Gentry NEW!

This is another artist who has been high on our list, but when you’re a one-woman band here it takes time. Bobbie Gentry really just wanted to write songs to sell to others. She never really wanted to perform her own work. But singing Ode To Billie Joe was cheaper than hiring someone else to do it, so she went into the studio. The rest is history, and the album garnered several Grammy Awards. The problem is that people only remember her for Ode to Billie Joe, and she was so much more. We will begin to reveal the many facets of Bobbie Gentry today.

3:00 p.m. Ode To Morning: Various Artists

This is the second airing of our newest EP. Last week we gave you our ‘Here Comes The Night’ EP, so this week we give you our songs that focus on the morning. You’ll hear Nanci Griffith, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Dusty Springfield, Linda Ronstadt, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Electric Light Orchestra, Harry Nilsson, Emmylou Harris, The Wallflowers, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Norah Jones, Todd Rundgren, Gordon Lightfoot, Willie Nelson, Jefferson Airplane, Harry Chapin, Three Dog Night, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Foreigner, Gram Parsons, Taj Mahal, James Taylor, Cat Stevens, B.B. King, Hoyt Axton, Townes Van Zandt, Badfinger, Chris Hillman, Hot Tuna, Fairport Convention, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Association.

This would be a most excellent day to join the rest of the listeners from around the world. I must say, I believe we are also catching on here in the U.S. these days. Hell, we’re so much better than Spotify. We don’t charge you to be misinformed. And we don’t charge you for the music either. All you need to do is push the button below.

We Spend Thursday With Several Musical Legends As We Return to British Rule (Musically Speaking) For the Day, December 30, 2021

Good Morning, British Invasion lovers! We’re totally British on the programming end today as we approach the New Year. Read on for details!

We’ve got full-on British music programming today interweaved in all of that great Open Stream!

Here’s Thursday’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Dusty In London: The Lost British Recordings of Dusty Springfield

Dusty Springfield is one of those iconic singers who is sometimes forgotten in the crush, but her soulful career spanned half a century. She’s often referred to as the Queen of Blue-Eyed Soul, but she’s really much more than that. All you need to do is listen, and you have that chance today.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Magical Mystery Tour by The Beatles

We’re winding down on this week’s chosen album. This is our next-to-last airing; our final airing will be on Saturday before we choose a new album to take us through the first week of the new year.

7:00 p.m. The Spencer Davis, Traffic, Blind Faith Superjam: A Tribute To Steve Winwood UPDATED!

Somehow when we first put this one together, we forgot the Spencer Davis Group portion of Winwood’s brilliant career. We remedied that and have a brand new version of this playlist up today. Our Winwood “Spotlight” highlights Winwood’s solo career as well, but this one is dedicated to his “band” work of the sixties and early seventies.

It’s a great day to listen to music. In fact, every damned day is a great day to listen to music. And this is the best place to get that music if you’re thinking like us. I’m not going to lie to you. We are not all things to all people, and we do not want to be. That means no rap, disco, hip-hop, ultra heavy metal, or bad pop bands with fiddles. And we’re free. What more could you ask for? Connect with us by hitting the button below:

It’s Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge With Our New AOW and The Women of Music Fully in Charge, December 19, 2021

Welcome to another Sunday in the Lounge. Today we have a vintage Album of The Week for you, and we have turned the musical reins over to the women of music. I don’t know a radio station that actually does any of that. We made a commitment to giving female artists a bigger voice. Take advantage of it.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Big Brother & The Holding Company by Big Brother & The Holding Company

This was the band’s debut album, released on August 23, 1967, with Janis Joplin as their main singer. It was recorded over a three-day stretch in December of 1966. After the band’s blowout success at the Monterey Pop festival in 1967, Columbia Records took over their contract and re-released the album with two additional songs and with Janis Joplin’s name on the front cover. Album reviews are mixed on this one, and we really don’t pay much attention to that stuff anyway. Regardless of the status of the album, it was the birth of Janis Joplin’s all too short, but oh so sweet, career.

3:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

The ladies return to take you through the afternoon and evening, making it clear that they are not second class citizens on this station. You’ll hear Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Carly Simon, Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders), Petula Clark, Laura Nyro, Cilla Black, Irma Thomas, Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Janis Joplin, Carole King, Maria Muldaur, Lucinda Williams, Rosanne Cash, Wendy Waldman, Eva Cassidy, Shawn Colvin, The Ronettes, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Susan Tedeschi, Phoebe Snow, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Nicolette Larson, Norah Jones, and more!

It’s certainly a day of rest, unless you’re supporting capitalism during the holiday season. Personally, I think the gift of music is a wonderful thing. You can listen in, turn your friends on to us, and it won’t cost you a penny. Or them, for that matter. We don’t play the same music over and over and over. We don’t charge for our content. We do not run commercials. And we’re here for you 24/7. What more could you want in your stocking?

It May Be Monday, But We’re Rockin’ With The Sixties and The All-Girl Revue 3, December 6, 2021

Good Morning, Audiophiles! It’s another Monday here on the planet earth, but we have your musical needs covered fully today. I promise.

We interrupted our regular programming yesterday for the Tom Petty Ph.D. Special, so today you’re treated to The Original Sixties bash!

Here’s your Moan-Day line-up:

11:00 a.m. The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

We did switch gears yesterday to celebrate Tom Petty’s honorary doctorate, so we are running yesterday’s EP today! And it’s always good to start out the work week with the music that inspired this station. You’ll hear The Beatles, Sonny & Cher, Mary Wells, Dusty Springfield, Tommy James & The Shondells, The Drifters, The Monkees, Gerry & The Pacemakers, The Hollies, Petula Clark, Buddy Holly, The Kinks, Neil Diamond, The Band, The Temptations, The Beach Boys, The Yardbirds, The Searchers, The Rolling Stones, Donovan, Bob Dylan, and many more! It’s totally uninterrupted!

7:00 p.m. The All-Girl Revue, Volume Three: Various Artists

We haven’t cued this one up for a while, so it’s a treat for me too since I am home and hanging in The Mermaid Lounge on Mondays! You’ll hear Linda Ronstadt, Valerie Carter, Phoebe Snow, Judy Collins, Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, Melissa Etheridge, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Wendy Waldman, Melanie, Susan Tedeschi, Aretha Franklin, Lydia Pense & Cold Blood, Shawn Colvin, Sarah McLachlan, and more!

We’ve got your musical needs covered every day here in The Mermaid Lounge. We’ve got quite a crew on this morning from around the planet, including Germany, Italy, Greece, The Netherlands, Faroe Islands, Russian Federation, France, the UK, Canada, Switzerland and points beyond. Why not join them?

It’s Our Usual Busy Saturday with Stephen Stills & Manassas, Dusty Springfield, Otis Redding, and LIVE DEAD Later, November 6, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! We run the gamut today, showing our musical versatility here at #BecomeUngovernable Radio. While we are definitely not all things to all people, we try to be all things for those we serve.

We kick off our day with Stephen Stills and Manassas

Here’s your Saturday line-up:

11:00 a.m. Stephen Stills & Manassas Live at The Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, March 23, 1972

Manassas is one of those bands many people have “fuzzy” memories of. They know they were out there, but are not quite sure what they were all about. As with all things Stills (a noted control freak), the band was formed mostly as a vehicle for his music (and it is great music, in truth). The members were Stills, Chris Hillman (formerly of The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers), Al Perkins, Calvin “Fuzzy” Samuels, Dallas Taylor, Paul Harris and Joe Layla. The players were invited to jam with Stills, they recorded an album and hit the road. They would break up, and reform with a different cast to record again, and then were done. But they made some great stuff along the way, like other supergroups.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Dusty in Memphis by Dusty Springfield FINAL AIRING!

We bid a fond farewell to Dusty Springfield’s fine effort today. But stick around, people. When you roll out of bed tomorrow morning, the first day of daylight savings, there’s going to be another great selection. I promise.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Otis Redding

The Big O is back today for your listening pleasure. It’s hard to believe that this guy hasn’t been around forever. His music feels like he should have been, but fate had other ideas. We keep Otis Redding alive here in The Mermaid Lounge. He’s a favorite.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Baltimore Civic Center, Baltimore, MD, May 26, 1977 NEW!

We are back this week with a new live recording of The Dead in concert after a brief visit to replay land. This time around, they’re live at the Baltimore Civic Center. Enjoy.

As always, a great day to tune us in. We’re pretty busy on Saturdays but in spite of all this programming you see here, it represents only about 6 hours of a 24-hour day of broadcasting. The rest of the time is wide Open Stream courtesy of The Music Mermaid.

www.tinyurl.com/Ungovernable-Radio

We’ve Got The Ladies Running The Festivities Early On, and We Close With Those Badass Guitarists; Before, During and After It’s Wide Open Stream, Thursday, November 4, 2021

We almost never say anything about us being 24/7, but we are. In spite of our work to bring you great programming, you should know that we run 24/7 uninterrupted, rotating more than 27,000 songs. We just thought we’d make sure you know that.

It’s Shawn Colvin’s turn In the Spotlight today!

Here’s today’s programming:

11:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Shawn Colvin

Shawn Colvin has been at it for decades. She learned guitar at the age of ten, and grew up listening to her father’s music collection, which included recordings of Pete Seeger and The Kingston Trio. In 1996, she released her album A Few Small Repairs, and her resulting hit Sunny Came Home became her launching point, spending four weeks at number one on the Adult Contemporary Chart. It 1998, Sunny Came Home won Grammys for both Song and Record of the Year. Today, we put the music of Shawn Colvin In the Spotlight.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Dusty in Memphis by Dusty Springfield

Another trip around for Dusty Springfield’s great album Dusty in Memphis. We’re winding down on this one. The last airing will be on Saturday. So, get this one in while you can!

7:00 p.m. Badass Guitarists, Volume One: Various Artists

You may not hear them sing in this playlist, but you’ll hear their handiwork on guitar. You’ll hear Duane Allman and Dickie Betts (The Allman Brothers Band), Mike Campbell and Tom Petty (The Heartbreakers), George Harrison (The Beatles), Jimi Hendrix, Keith Richards (The Stones), Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Joe Perry (Aerosmith), John “J” Geils (The J. Geils Band), Pete Townsend (The Who), Paul Barrere and Lowell George (Little Feat), and more!

Ho Hum. Here we go again. It’s a great day to tune us in. That’s actually all we are asking. No strings. I know most people find that hard to believe, but it’s true. It’s the one time you’ll hear it where, if you actually give us a shot, you’ll find it is 100% true. No lie.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday Here in The Mermaid Lounge With Jimmy Reed, John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, and Dusty Springfield, November 2, 2021

Good Morning, Bluesologists! We have a fine line-up today, but it does involve some explaining! Hey, this is why we write this blog every morning, come hell or high water (as my mother would say).

John Mayall, The Godfather of British Blues

Here’s today’s line-up:

Remember, kids, the devil is in the details!

11:00 a.m. John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, Live in 1967

These great archival recordings feature one of the best Bluesbreakers line-up ever, with John Mayall (vocal, keyboards, harmonica), Peter Green (lead guitar), John McVie (bass) and Mick Fleetwood (drums). This iteration of The Bluesbreakers were only together for about three months, but one die-hard fan managed to sneak a reel-to-reel recorder into five London venues to capture this music history. While these one-track files have been engineered a bit, please keep in mind that this is 1967 and, although a bit rough, this is genuine music history.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Dusty in Memphis by Dusty Springfield

Our second airing of this great Album of The Week choice. Although this album sold poorly when released, it is recognized by the critics as one of the greatest albums ever recorded.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Jimmy Reed NEW!

Jimmy Reed is one of the most underrated bluesmen of his generation, but one thing is for certain: His particular style of electric blues was popular with both blues and non-blues audiences. His hits Honest I Do (1957), Baby What You Want Me To Do (1960), Big Boss Man (1961) and Bright Lights, Big City (1961) made it to both Billboards rhythm & blues and Hot 100 Singles charts. This Spotlight feature is taken from the Live at Carnegie Hall album set, which is basically a studio recreation of a past live concert, along with some of his greatest hits. We thought this would make a great way to introduce some folks to a guy who may have fallen through their blues cracks.

Come on, blues lovers! This is your day here in The Mermaid Lounge, and you would be greatly remiss in allowing this one to pass you by. Join your friends from Netherlands, Russian Federation, Portugal, Italy, Spain, Texas (yes, Texas), the Faroe Islands and points beyond this morning. What are you waiting for?

We Close Out Tom Petty Month, Give You A New Album of The Week, and Folk Music From A-to-Z, Sunday (also, Halloween), October 31 , 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists. We’ve got another fine Sunday on tap kicking off a bit earlier so that we can give you a final Heartbreakers live performance this evening to close out Tom Petty Month.

Today’s featured Folk Music EP starts at 2:00 p.m.!

Here’s your Sunday Funday line-up:

10:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Dusty in Memphis by Dusty Springfield

This was the first time Dusty Springfield brought her unique R & B style together with the Memphis sound. It sold poorly when it was released in 1969, but as Springfield’s music became known and her legend grew, things changed. Later, it would be acclaimed by critics as one of the most important popular music albums ever made. It also spawned Son of A Preacher Man, Springfield’s “signature” song and her great version of Windmills Of Your Mind.

2:00 p.m. Folk Music From A-to-Z: Various Artists

Take a trip down memory lane to the present with one of the original “protest” musical genres, FOLK. You’ll hear Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Odetta, Phil Ochs, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell, Tom Rush, John Prine, Nanci Griffith, The Stone Poneys, Bonnie Raitt, The Wallflowers, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Peter, Paul & Mary, Jesse Winchester, Eric Andersen, The Band, Harry Chapin, Cat Stevens, and many more!

8:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, March 15, 1999

Earlier during Tom Petty month we played the recordings of the Heartbreakers’ legendary 20-might residency at the Fillmore West from 1997. Tonight, we close out another Tom Petty Month here in The Mermaid Lounge with recordings from the band’s 1999 residency at The Fillmore.

There are many reasons to tune us in, people. Must I keep listing them? I mean, I will if I have to. We’re totally free and we don’t ask for a credit card or personal information. We don’t accept advertising, so we don’t mess up the musical vibe with endless capitalist chatter, and our DJ is practically a mute. I mean, I know people don’t trust the whole “no strings” thing, but maybe you should give us a shot and we’ll prove it to you.
