She’s been a fixture on the country music scene since 1956, partnered up with Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris to form one of music’s most formidable supergroups (Trio), and is still active today. During that time, it is estimated that she has written about 3,000 songs. They have been covered by so many artists, including Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Tina Turner, Maria Muldaur, Waylon Jennings, Whitney Houston, The Incredible String Band and many more. You know, people keep talking about Whitney Houston’s cover of Parton’s I Will Always Love You, probably because it was associated with a movie. In reality, that cover is owned by Linda Ronstadt. Even Dolly says that. But I digress. This week, Dolly Parton is our featured singer-songwriter, and she’s doing the singing.

This was a great performance from what is considered one of the best road bands on the planet (actually, one of the very best bands on the planet). There’s nothing like seeing TPATH live (which I had the good fortune to do four times). TPATH is one of our official House Bands (along with The Beatles). Tonight we’ve got them live from the Vic Theatre in Chicago.

12:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Innervisions by Stevie Wonder NEW!

Innervisions was singer, songwriter and musician Stevie Wonder’s sixteenth studio album, and it is largely viewed as his transition from ‘Little’ Stevie Wonder to a more mature, socially conscious musician. It was released on August 3, 1973 on the Tamla label (a subsidiary of Motown). At the 16th Grammy Awards it won for Best Album of The Year, and Living For The City won for Best R&B Song. We Keep It Simple On Sunday With The Byrds’ “Mr. Tambourine Man” as Our AOW and ‘The British Are Coming’ EP in the Afternoon, January 29, 2023

Good morning, Weekenders! You know we keep it pretty simple on Sundays here in The Mermaid Lounge with plenty of wide Open Stream and just a couple of (great) programming items.

Here’s your simple Sunday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Mr. Tambourine Man by The Byrds NEW!

This is the debut album by this great band, released on June 21, 1965, and marked the debut of the signature guitar sound of Jim McGuinn’s 12-string Rickenbacker guitar and the band’s amazing harmonizing, a vocal approach of the late, great David Crosby who would carry that tradition on into Crosby, Stills & Nash later in his career. This album consists mainly of folk covers, many written by Bob Dylan including the title tune and originals co-written by Gene Clark. The album provided the first American challenge to the chart dominance of The Beatles and other British invasion bands. The Byrds would go on to influence others in the sixties as well as future generations of musicians, including Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers who carried on the jangling sound of McGuinn’s 12-string Rickenbacker throughout their 40-year career. I have long been a fan of Leon Russell. He’s one of my favorite singer-songwriters. I also remember the first time I heard Carney and thinking that this would be the album where others would recognize just how great he truly was. Carney is Russell’s third studio album, released in 1972. It gave him his first hit single in Tight Rope (backed by Masquerade). The album is a split between straightforward roots rock and a bit of psychedelia. The music critics hate that shit, but his fans didn’t. That’s what mattered. The album peaked at No. 2 on Billboard.

Water is absolutely essential to the perpetuation of life on the planet, and it is a popular subject in the music world, as you will see.
