It’s Sunday and We Have Our ‘Original Sixties Rotation’ EP, a Great Collaboration for Our AOW, and Peter Tosh In the Spotlight, August 21, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’ve got an eclectic programming day planned for you today, starting with our great Album of The Week, then moving into our very first Sixties Rotation. We close out later with our Reggae selection.

Here’s today’s lineup:

10:00 a.m. Album of The Week: The Union by Elton John and Leon Russell NEW!

Any album with these two guys in collaboration can only be called a tour de force. Released in 2010, the album was produced by the great T. Bone Burnett (who also contributes on electric guitar). Others who helped out include Booker T. Jones (Hammond B-3), Neil Young (vocals), Robert Randolph (pedal steel guitar), and Brian Wilson (vocal harmonies). It debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, and was listed at No. 3 on Rolling Stone’s 30 Best Albums of 2010.

1:00 p.m. The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

We’ve got just over five hours of uninterrupted sixties music coming your way in the early afternoon. This particular rotation focuses on the early-to-mid years of the decade, although I can’t guarantee we don’t slip some stuff in from later in the decade. I may have been stoned when I made it. 8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Peter Tosh NEW!

Peter Tosh has a long, storied musical history. Abandoned by his parents and shuffled among his relatives, he eventually became a self-taught singer, songwriter and musician who was a critical part of The Wailers. He eventually met Robert Nesta Marley (THE Bob Marley) and Neville O’Reilly Livingston (Bunny Wailer). They started singing together in 1962 and the rest is history. He wrote several of the Wailers hit songs including Get Up, Stand Up, 400 Years, and No Sympathy. After the Wailers, Peter Tosh went on to a successful solo career starting with his album, Legalize It. Today, we put Reggae legend Peter Tosh In the Spotlight.

Here we are again. Another Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge, and a perfect day to acquaint yourselves with our special brand of radio. Yep. It’s true. You can’t create “custom” playlists here. That’s not what we’re about. We’re about real radio. I remember the days of summer laying around in my yard with my friends tuned into our transistor radios listening to WMEX. We waited in anticipation for every song.

Good Morning, Weekenders! Today is going to be a hot one, as they say, particularly in the weather sense as we anticipate tickling the 100 degree mark. Trust me. I’m a total Lounge Lizard today.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Steady On by Shawn Colvin NEW!

Today we give you Shawn Colvin’s debut album, released on October 17, 1989. Not only did it help establish Colvin as a folk force to be reckoned with, but it brought her the Grammy for the Best Contemporary Folk Album in 1991. She either wrote or co-wrote every song on the album, and had help from folks like Bruce Hornsby, Suzanne Vega, and Rick Marotta, who also took a turn as Linda Ronstadt’s drummer. It’s a keeper and it makes its Mermaid Lounge debut today at 11:00 a.m.

3:00 p.m. The British Are Coming! Various Artists

Our friends from Across the Pond are back with some great music from The British Invasion and beyond. You’ll hear The Beatles (of course), The Who, The Zombies, Dave Mason, Electric Light Orchestra, The Hollies, Petula Clark, Dusty Springfield, Small Faces, Led Zeppelin, The Kinks, Cream, Queen, the Dave Clark Five, The Bee Gees, The Moody Blues, Rod Stewart, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Them, Herman’s Hermits, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Badfinger, The Yardbirds, Traffic, Elton John, Lulu, Pink Floyd, The Animals, Yes, the Spencer Davis Group, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, and more!

Mr. Peabody put us in the Wayback Machine for this one, vintage 1969 and another new show added to our list of Live Dead performances.

Dusty Springfield must not be forgotten in the annals of women in music. Her career spanned five decades, and she was one of the most famous transatlantic stars of The British Invasion, and a Sixties icon. Her first hit came in 1963 when she released I Only Want To Be With You. one of her six transatlantic hits of the Sixties that also included her two signature songs, You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me and Son of A Preacher Man. Tune Dusty in at 7:00 p.m.

I remember going to see these guys in various venues around Cambridge, Massachusetts when I was just a young’un. This blues and swing revival band has been at this for five decades. They are no stranger to the blues circuit. If you haven’t paid much attention to them, this would be a good time.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Elton John by Elton John

This is our second airing of this great Elton John album, his debut in the U.S. but his second studio album outside this country. Two of my absolute favorite Elton John songs appear on this album, Take Me To The Pilot and Your Song. There are many singers and bands whose early music I prefer to their material in later years. Elton John is one of them.

7:00 p.m. The Allman Brothers Band Play All Night: Live at The Beacon Theatre, New York (1992)

This is a great collection of live songs performed by The Brothers during their residency at The Beacon during 1992. Some “live” Allman Brothers is a great way to close out the Tuesday Bluesday programming.

I personally have a love-hate relationship with EJ, preferring his earlier works to the stuff he made later in his career. When you begin a long-term run in Vegas, you know it’s time to hang them up. I continue to believe this is one of Elton John’s finest albums, if not his absolute best. I have liked various songs here and there since the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album, but nothing has knocked my socks off since then. Regardless, this album belongs on our Album of The Week radar without a doubt.

If It’s Monday, It Must be Mudcrutch, And We Have Our Great EP ‘Water, Water Everywhere’ To Start Things Off, October 4, 2021

7:00 p.m. Mudcrutch Monday Madness! The Full Catalogue

This playlist includes all of Mudcrutch, including the definitive live version of Hungry No More (a kickass song) recorded live at Boston’s House of Blues in 2016. It also includes the original version of Don’t Do Me Like That, which was originally a Mudcrutch song. This was the band that Tom Petty left Gainesville with when he made his move to L.A. to make music. It was the band that morphed into Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. And the rest, as they say, is history. EXCEPT, Tom Petty decided to bring Mudcrutch back to life in 2008 with its original members, including Tom Leadon on guitar (whose brother, Bernie, played with the Eagles) and Randall Marsh, his friend from Gainesville, on drums. As a member of Mudcrutch, Tom Petty was the bass player. Mudcrutch finally became a success in their own right. Their sound is awesome, and it’s different than The Hearbreakers even though the original Mudcrutch also had Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell. If you’re a true Petty fan, then you already know Mudcrutch. If you’re just a lover of The Heartbreakers’ hits and you’re not a deep digger, this is your opportunity.

It’s Petty month here in The Mermaid Lounge. We won’t be obnoxious about it, but we will be playing more Tom Petty than usual, and that is always a good thing. We remain all about the music.
