On Wednesday It’s ‘The Founders’ EP, Live Jimi Hendrix and Volume Three of The ‘All-Girl Revue’, September 18, 2024

Good morning, music lovers! Today we give respect to the founders of rock and roll, those who inspired the first generation of classic rock. Did I complicate that enough?

Here’s your midweek lineup:

You’ll hear Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Little Richard, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, The Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Big Mama Thornton, Big Joe Turner, Hank Williams, Bill Haley & The Comets, Ray Charles, The Drifters, Roy Orbison, Robert Johnson, Carl Perkins, Eddie Cochran, Johnny Cash, Muddy Waters and more!

We give you a bit of new-to-the-station live Hendrix this afternoon, this one from the Forum.

We chill out with the ladies this evening, including Linda Ronstadt, Phoebe Snow, Carole King, Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitt, Melanie, Dolly Parton, Shawn Colvin, Carly Simon, Valerie Carter, Wendy Waldman, Susan Tedeschi, Aretha Franklin and more!

On Saturday We Spend Time With The Founders, Elvis Presley and Fats Domino as We Get Back, August 3, 2024

Good morning, musicologists! Today we spend some program time with the founders of rock n’ roll; the inspiration for those whose music inspired the station. We wouldn’t be here without them.

Here’s your musical history lesson:

9:00 a.m. The Founders: Various Artists

Take a trip back in time with the artists who inspired our artists, the founders of rock n’ roll. You’ll hear Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Little Richard, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, The Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Big Mama Thornton, Big Joe Turner, Hank Williams, Bill Haley & The Comets, Ray Charles, The Drifters, Roy Orbison, Robert Johnson, Carl Perkins, Eddie Cochran, Johnny Cash, Muddy Waters and more!

These are tough to come by, but we found an Elvis benefit concert for the USS Arizona, and jumped at the chance to get it. We have it for you this afternoon.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Fats Domino

Was anybody playing rock n’ roll before Fats Domino? I’m not actually sure, but I do know he was playing music that nobody had ever heard before. The man is one of the stalwarts of rock n’ roll, and tonight we put him In the Spotlight.

A Janis Joplin Spotlight Feature, A Playlist About Shoes, and Live John Hiatt Awaits You On Friday, July 5, 2024

Good morning, music lovers! Once again we’ve made it to the end of the working week. We’ve got some great stuff to get you through this last day before the weekend arrives!

Here’s your musical lineup:

10:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Janis Joplin

The reigning queen of blues-rock with Big Brother & The Holding Company, The Kozmic Blues Band and as a solo artist kicks off the festivities at 10:00 a.m.

3:00 p.m. Those Shoes: Various Artists

Who knew there were so many songs about shoes? You’ll hear from Steve Winwood, Elvis Presley, The Eagles, Little Feat, Norah Jones, Laura Nyro, Leon Russell, Traffic, The Beatles, Supertramp, Betty Everett, The Band, Paul Simon and more!

John Hiatt is another of those singer-songwriters who puts people on the map. His songs of redemption and relationships have been covered by nearly one hundred artists, from Linda Ronstadt (a brilliant rendering of his We Ran), to Steve Earle to Iggy Pop. Today we put him In The Spotlight singing his own music.

Monday We Open With Leon Russell and Close With Our ‘Money Honey’ Playlist; The Wilburys Are In Between, June 10, 2024

Yes, work is back in the picture but Monday isn’t all that bad. We open with live Leon Russell and close with songs about money. In between, it’s a Traveling Wilburys Spotlight.

Here’s your Monday, Monday lineup:

Nothing like a little taste of live Leon Russell to get you going in the morning.

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Traveling Wilburys

Five friends who loved to hang out and play music together. No pressures of the road. The Traveling Wilburys never really traveled. But I’ll tell you what: They are the greatest supergroup in music history. See for yourself.

7:00 p.m. Money, Honey: Various Artists

We close it out today with a multi-artist playlist of songs about money. You’ll hear Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Guess Who, Warren Zevon, Van Morrison, Tom Waits, J. J. Cale, Slim Harpo, Chuck Berry, Laura Nyro, Randy Newman, Willie Nelson, Barrett Strong and more!

It’s Sunday In The Lounge With Chicago ‘Live’ in Japan, a Hollies Spotlight, and ‘The Founders’ EP Later, June 2, 2024

Good morning, music lovers and welcome to Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge where the living is easy and the music is totally free 24/7.

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

Chicago is like a few other bands during my lifetime that have had two lives, like The Doobie Brothers and The Bee Gees. In all cases, we prefer the previous lives. We’re fans of the Terry Kath version of Chicago with its original edginess and creativity, not the Peter Cetera born-again, milquetoast collection of syrupy ballads. Today we have the original band, what I like to call Chicago Transit Authority, live in Japan.

2:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of The Hollies

Here is another great British Invasion band, and the band that would become one of the most musically influential of its time and spawn other great bands, like Crosby, Stills & Nash. It’s time we turn the Spotlight back on this band.

5:00 p.m. The Founders: Various Artists

This evening we go back to where this rock and roll thing all began with Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Little Richard, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, The Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Big Mama Thornton, Big Joe Turner, Hank Williams, Bill Haley & His Comets, Ray Charles, The Drifters, Roy Orbison, Robert Johnson, Carl Perkins, Eddie Cochran, Johnny Cash, Muddy Waters and more!

Midweek Brings More Sixties Music, a Yusuf/Cat Stevens Spotlight, and Live Dr. John, on Wednesday, May 29, 2024

Good morning, music lovers, here we are again at another midweek. We’ve got a great lineup for you here today, beginning with volume two of our ‘Sixties Rotation’ EP.

Here’s your midweek musical mayhem:

9:00 a.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two: Various Artists

We’re into the latter portion of the sixties here where the feel is much more psychedelic at times. You’ll hear The Mamas & The Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Marvin Gaye, Buffalo Springfield, Sly & The Family Stone, The Temptation, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Roy Orbison, The Yardbirds, The Animals, Linda Ronstadt, Wilson Pickett, The Band, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, The Ronettes, The Kinks, The Byrds, Chuck Berry, James Brown, Blind Faith, The Box Tops, CSNY, B. B. King, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell The Doors and more!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Cat Stevens

I have always been a fan of The Cat. He is undoubtedly one of the best and brightest of his generation of singer-songwriters. Anybody remember the torture this guy went through after 9-11 simply because he had converted to Islam? It was totally unwarranted. He changed religions. He didn’t become a terrorist. Today, he’s rightfully In The Spotlight.

8:00 p.m. Dr. John Live at Ultrasonic Studios, Hempstead, NY, November 6, 1973

The Good Dr. John Creaux, The Night Tripper (his New Orleans alter ego), and one of our very favorites, is on call tonight at 8:00 p.m.

Great day to join in and it’s an effortless process. Just pull up a tab and hit this button below. No lie. That’s it. And it’s not any stinkin’ free trial either. It’s the way it is every day.

Souther, Harry Nilsson, Canned Heat, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, James Taylor, Joan Baez, Judy Collins and more!

The King is in The Mermaid Lounge this afternoon.

8:00 p.m. Emmylou Harris & Spyboy Live at Kongresshaus, Zurich, Switzerland, January 20, 1997

A great performance by a woman who is not shy about shifting gears and making change. This was the band she put together to take her career-redefining album Wrecking Ball on the road. If you haven’t heard the album, you must.

I’m on the road early this morning on a mission of mercy, but The Music Mermaid has this under control. Talk to you all tomorrow!

Souther, Linda Ronstadt and more!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Nina Simone

Was there anything Nina Simone could not do? She was a singer, songwriter, pianist, composer, arranger and civil rights activist. Her style encompassed many genres, including classical, folk, gospel, blues, jazz, R & B and pop. Today she’s in our Spotlight.

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Piazza Napoleone, Lucca, Italy, June 29, 2012

We go back to 2012 for this great Heartbreakers show from Lucca, Italy.

Once again, the mantra: We’re here 24/7 at no cost to the listening public (and we’re worldwide) and with no interruptions from commercial advertising. Nope. The button’s below.

Then, we’re back in the Wayback Machine for a bit of a jam at the iconic Cafe Au Go Go with Jimi Hendrix joined by Paul Butterfield, Elvin Bishop and Harvey Brooks.

It’s an all-Sixties programming kind of day here in The Mermaid Lounge. We’re on 24/7, so we’ll have all that great wide Open Stream before, in between and after.

We’re at Midweek With ‘Color My World’, a Dusty Springfield Spotlight & a McCartney Tokyo Show, Wednesday, April 17, 2024

Good morning, musicologists! We’re already at midweek and we’ve got a great lineup, including a Dusty Springfield Spotlight feature and a show from McCartney’s 1993 World Tour.

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Color My World: Various Artists

First, however, we start out with colors in the title, lyrics or both with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Donovan, Booker T & The MG’s, Electric Light Orchestra, Procol Harum, Joni Mitchell, The Who, Amy Winehouse, Sam & Dave, Badfinger, Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Elvis Costello, Neil Young, Jefferson Airplane, The Hollies, Elvis Presley, Janis Joplin, Cream, Marvin Gaye, Lucinda Williams, John Hiatt, J.D.
