It’s Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge With Our New AOW and The Women of Music Fully in Charge, December 19, 2021

Welcome to another Sunday in the Lounge. Today we have a vintage Album of The Week for you, and we have turned the musical reins over to the women of music. I don’t know a radio station that actually does any of that. We made a commitment to giving female artists a bigger voice. Take advantage of it.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Big Brother & The Holding Company by Big Brother & The Holding Company

This was the band’s debut album, released on August 23, 1967, with Janis Joplin as their main singer. It was recorded over a three-day stretch in December of 1966. After the band’s blowout success at the Monterey Pop festival in 1967, Columbia Records took over their contract and re-released the album with two additional songs and with Janis Joplin’s name on the front cover. Album reviews are mixed on this one, and we really don’t pay much attention to that stuff anyway. Regardless of the status of the album, it was the birth of Janis Joplin’s all too short, but oh so sweet, career.

Born from the ashes of the Jefferson Airplane, Jorma Kaukonen (guitar/vocals) and Jack Cassady (bassist) created this great blues rock band. While other members have come and gone over the years, the stalwarts have always been these guys. In fact, they’ll be celebrating Jorma’s 80th birthday in with a live performance at Carnegie Hall on April 22, 2022. There’s something to be said for the longevity of this generation of musicians for sure. That’s why we’re here.

Emmylou Harris’ career began back in 1969 and she is still on the move. During that time she has won 14 Grammy Awards, the Polar Music Prize (and many other awards too numerous to mention here), been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008, and was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Harris is rightfully credited with making country more accessible to a wider audience, and today we put her In the Spotlight.

When I was young and dumb, I just assumed that these guys came straight out of the Louisiana Bayou. In fact, what we have are four guys from Berkeley who sounded like they came straight out of the Louisiana Bayou. They also just happened to make some of the greatest rock n’ roll on the planet. It’s rare that we choose a Greatest Hits album as our Album of The Week, but there are those moments in music when it must be done. For those who are only familiar with the current iteration of Fleetwood Mac, this is not how they began their career. During the sixties, when the band came to be, it was a British blues-rock band led by a great guitarist named Peter Green. His version of Fleetwood Mac remains our favorite here in the lounge. We’ve done some work on this since the last time we aired it. You know, the term ‘Supergroup’ is used a bit too liberally today, but we can’t control that shit except as we define the term. These bands do not come along very often, and they generally aren’t a lifetime deal. They may tour, or they may not. But one thing’s for sure: They have been created by artists who were successful either in other bands or as solo artists. We feel confident that we’re giving your the all-inclusive list.

The Muswell Hillbillies are back with their own unique sound and collection of hits that can’t be denied. Somehow, I feel like these guys were always on the cusp of being considered a great band in some people’s minds, but The Kinks were as good as any band in their day and had a kick ass sound all their own.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at West High Auditorium, Anchorage, Alaska, June 21, 1980

This is a repeat performance for us, but this has not been aired for more than a year here. This show is one of three that The Dead played in the 2,000-seat auditorium at West High School in Anchorage back in 1980. Many consider it one of their best live shows.

Our birthday girl tribute to Bonnie Raitt is a great “live” studio event from 1972 held at Ultrasonic Studios in New York and broadcast on WLIR-FM with Bonnie Raitt, Lowell George (Little Feat), John Hammond, and Freebo (also known as Daniel Friedberg), who is mostly known for his work with Bonnie Raitt. 10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at the CU Events Center, University of Colorado, Boulder, December 9, 1981 NEW!

At Midweek, It’s Dan Fogelberg In the Spotlight, An Afternoon Trifecta-Fest, and The Beatles This Evening, Wednesday, November 10, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! Here we are again at midweek. It’s Truck Day at the old slave shack, but I certainly have you covered musically in my absence. The Music Mermaid will see that everything is carried out to the letter.

The Beatles touched down in the U.S. on February 7, 1964, my tenth birthday. It changed everything.

11:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Dan Fogelberg

This guy’s name doesn’t always roll off people’s tongue, but it should. Fogelberg was a singer, songwriter, musician, and multi-instrumentalist who, for me, provided an oasis in the dry desert of the eighties music scene (absolutely not my favorite generation of music), along with a few others, most notably Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. People can debate an artist’s “best” album all day and night because that decision is subjective and personal. For me Souvenirs was not only his best album, but one of the best albums ever put on vinyl.

The Beatles touched ground here on my tenth birthday. Up until that point, I had been listening to my sisters’ music pretty regularly. When the Beatles landed, it changed everything for me. In fact, it changed everything in the house because my sisters became fans pretty quickly as well. This is the other half of our House Band duo, and over the next few days we’ll be playing their stuff in chronological order.

Come on, people. Join your friends. Wednesday always seems to be fairly active early in the morning: Sweden, Italy, France, Germany, Denmark, Russian Federation, Japan, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and the UK are on so far. These people know good music when they hear it.

Saturday Brings ‘The Western Wall Tour’ with Ronstadt & Harris, Two Albums (One Our AOW and One For Petty Month), and LIVE DEAD Later, October 16, 2021

This was undoubtedly one of the most amazing performances I have ever witnessed. It was billed as The Two of Us, but it was really in support of their great duet album, Western Wall, The Tucson Sessions recorded at the Arizona Inn.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Excitable Boy by Warren Zevon FINAL AIRING!

Today we bid a fond farewell to this week’s AOW, Excitable Boy by Warren Zevon. Tomorrow when you roll out of bed, we’ll have a brand new selection. (I repeat this shit every week, don’t I?)

7:00 p.m. Not The Album of The Week: Mojo by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

This one’s not our Album of The Week this week because it has already been our AOW once. But in the midst of Tom Petty Month here in The Mermaid Lounge, we believe this album begs replaying. According to producer Ryan Ulyate, this was one of those albums where Petty kept coming in with great songs…to the point where fifteen were included here. Released on June 15, 2010, it was Petty’s first new album with the band in eight years and the consensus everywhere was that it was well worth the wait.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Uptown Theatre, Chicago, IL, December 3, 1979 NEW!

Another one from the vault from the world’s ultimate jam band. The boys are in fine form here.
