Good Morning, Music Lovers! How the hell are you this fine Sunday? We have a great line-up today sprinkled in all that Open Stream which, we are again expanding as we speak (or as I write).

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Joan Baez by Joan Baez NEW!

This album has great historical significance to music. In 2015, the album was placed into the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress for special recognition and preservation as one of the sound recordings in over 130 years of recording history that has “cultural, artistic and/or historical significance to American society and the nation’s audio legacy” It was recorded in the summer of 1960 and released the same year. Later re-issues contained bonus tracks, but this is the original 13 songs and nothing more.

3:00 p.m. Tom Petty’s Peculiar Picks: The Best of The Buried Treasure Show NEW!

Tom Petty had a side gig. He was a DJ on The Buried Treasure Show, which debuted on Sirius XM’s Deep Tracks channel, then moved to Tom Petty Radio. Tom Petty shared not only some pretty great music (some of it buried and pretty obscure), but his knowledge about its history and how it influenced the influencers. Those of us who listen beyond the catchy tune stage consider this show a national treasure, and agree totally with the sentiment expressed in this article.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Lukas Nelson & Promise of The Real

Yeah. He’s Willie’s boy. And he’s pretty damned good. POTR, as they are affectionately known, also has a side gig as Neil Young’s touring band. Can’t get a much better endorsement than that.

I have no clue what any of you are up to today but — whatever it is — you should have this station tuned in. After all, it’s Sunday Funday. And we’re really fun and won’t cost you a dime.

Tuesday in The College of Rock n’ Roll Knowledge: 11/24/2020

It’s Tuesday Bluesday in the College of Rock n’ Roll Knowledge, and we press on with some great events in our musical history.

The Kingston Trio made musical history in 1958

Here’s today’s classic rock lesson:

November 24, 1958: The Kingston Trio became the first group to have a #1 album. Only solo artists had achieved that prior to them.

November 24, 1961: Howlin’ Wolf arrived in London for his first European tour.

November 24, 1965: The Young Rascals begin recording Good Lovin’ which will hit #1 early the next year.

November 24, 1966: The Beatles begin recording sessions for Sargeant Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band by laying down tracks for Strawberry Fields Forever. In the end, the song doesn’t make the album, but it will appear on Magical Mystery Tour the following year.

November 24, 1972: ABC-TV’s In Concert debuts with Alice Cooper, Chuck Berry, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Poco, and The Allman Brothers Band. Don Kirschner is the producer, and he also produces The Monkees.

November 24, 1979: The Eagles spend a fourth week on top of the album charts with The Long Run.

November 24, 1980: Steely Dan releases the single Hey Nineteen, one of my all-time favorite songs.

November 24, 1985: Blues pioneer Big Joe Turner died of kidney failure at the age of 74. Turner was one of the first artists to ever play rock n’ roll when he wrote and recorded Shake, Rattle and Roll in 1954.

November 24, 1991: Freddie Mercury dies of bronchopneumonia, a complication from AIDS, at his home in London at the age of 45. He had just publicly acknowledged having the disease the day before. His friend (and nothing more), Dave Clark, of The Dave Clark Five, was with him when he died.

November 24, 1939: Jim Yester, keyboardist for The Association, was born in Birmingham, Alabama.

November 24, 1941: Pete Best, drummer for The Beatles in the very early years, was born in Madras, India.

November 24, 1941: Donald “Duck” Dunn, bass guitarist for the Mar-Keys, and Booker T. & The MG’s, was born in Memphis, Tennessee.

Jerry Jeff Walker originated the idea of the ‘country music outlaw’ back in the day, and he lived it. He made some really great music, and he was just a blast to see in concert. I saw him a couple of times, the most memorable was when he opened for Little Feat at the old Harvard Square Theater in Cambridge. A splended time was had by all that evening.

3:00 p.m. The Flying Burrito Brothers Live From My Father’s Place, Old Roslyn, New York, November 28, 1976 NEW!

The Flying Burrito Brothers were founded in Los Angeles in 1968 by Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman. They have undergone many personnel changes over the years, but are best remembered for their influential early work in country rock, and their debut album The Gilded Palace of Sin (1969).

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Maria Muldaur

Maria Muldaur is a folk and blues singer, who was an influential part of the folk music revival of the 1960s. Sometimes the general public overlooks her incredible body of work, but her peers do not.

11:00 a.m.   The Best of The Summer of Love! John Wesley Harding by Bob Dylan  NEW!

Dylan’s eighth studio album, released on December 27, 1967, marked a return to his folk roots after a few blues-influenced rock albums. It was very well received, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard charts and No. 1 in the UK. It was recorded around the same time as the home recordings made with The Band, which were eventually released as The Basement Tapes.

2:00 p.m.    Dusty in London: The Lost British Recordings

There are fucking days when I cannot believe that people do not have a grasp on what Dusty Springfield has meant to music in general, let alone as a woman pioneer in this hell-bent male profession. But we here in The Mermaid Lounge “get it” for sure.

7:00 p.m.     Acid: The Lost Cream Tapes (1967-1968)

This bootleg was actually released in 2005 and are alternate recordings of several songs as well as some jamming. Very cool. And really good quality, so enjoy. By the way, there are a couple of Falstaff Beer Commercial recordings tossed in, proving once again that advertising has been king for a long time.

Good Morning, Ungovernables! The next few days here are big days for the ladies of rock n’ roll as we move toward the end of Women’s Week. Today’s programming is only seven hours worth, but it’s packed with great stuff.

11:00 a.m.   Lucinda Williams Live at The Fillmore

Lucinda Williams hails from Louisiana and somehow you can just feel that coming through in her gritty music. Among her peers, she’s one of the most respected and influential singer-songwriters in the business. You’d never know it because — no matter how you look at it — women are still considered second-class citizens in the rock world. At least these women are. The little blonde sound-alike waifs they prop up on stage these days are no match.

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: Western Wall: The Tuscon Sessions by Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris

This is one of those albums that musicians feel in their soul. It may not be a platinum seller, but that’s not why it’s being done. It’s one of the things you have the opportunity to make after you’ve paid your dues in the business. And both Ronstadt and Harris have done just that.

7:00 p.m.     In the Spotlight: The Music of Maria Muldaur   NEW!

Friend of Linda, Bonnie, Kate & Anna McGarrigle and many others. Maria Muldaur has been out there since the great folk revival of the sixties. She has been gracing us with her own solo work and also singing background and harmonies with just about everyone else, including Linda Ronstadt, the Jerry Garcia Band, the Jim Kweskin Jug Band, and Paul Butterfield. Today she gets The Spotlight, and deservedly so.
