Steely Dan In the Spotlight, Badass Guitarists Volume 2, and All About Blue Too, Monday, March 15, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers and welcome to the beginning of another week here in The Mermaid Lounge, where we are always catering to your listening pleasure!

Today we have Steely Dan In the Spotlight.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Steely Dan

Steely Dan was formed in 1971 by core members Walter Becker and Donald Fagan. Their music defied definition, fusing together rock, pop, latin, jazz, R & B, and blues to create their own unique sound. Today we’ve got them In the Spotlight.

3:00 p.m. Badass Guitarists, Volume Two: Various Artists

In spite of what the assclown named Yeezy says about guitars being insignificant to music (that’s because he has no fucking talent whatsoever), we’ve got a line-up of guitartists that prove him wrong today, including Bonnie Raitt, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Andrew Gold, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Jerry Garcia, Mike Campbell, Brian May, and many more.

7:00 p.m. All About Blue Too: Various Artists

This is volume two of our playlist fixated on the color blue. Can’t help it. It’s my favorite color. We have The Doors, Buddy Guy, Linda Ronstadt, Electric Light Orchestra, Janis Joplin, Guy Clark, Little Feat, B.B. King, Canned Heat, George Harrison, Laura Nyro, Steve Earle & The Dukes Dr. John, Boz Scaggs, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and more!

I know it’s Monday, but don’t be blue (get it?). Tune us in for a good time. We make your day better, for cheap. In fact, for free. That’s what I’m talking about.

Big Things Come In Groups of Threes Today From The Mermaid Lounge, Friday, September 18, 2020

It’s finally Friday. Of course, for those of us working retail, that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the week. But no matter. Today in The Mermaid Lounge, great things come in groups of three. You’ll see what I mean.

Linda. Emmylou. Dolly. A supergroup no matter what they tell you.

Here’s Friday’s planned programming:

12:00 p.m. The Complete Trio Collection: Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton

I always lead off with Linda Ronstadt when I’m talking about a group of women singers. That is totally my bias, but it is without shame. No matter how you cut it, women get the short end of the straw in music. If they were guys, the word ‘supergroup’ would be flowing off everyone’s tongue. Linda, Emmylou and Dolly were a supergroup. The Complete Trio Collection proves it.

The complete collection gives you just that along with alternative versions of some of the songs and previously-unreleased material.

7:00 p.m. Steve Earle, Townes VanZandt, and Guy Clark: Together at The Bluebird Cafe, Nashville, September 3, 1995

It was Emmylou Harris who led me to Guy Clark originally. But one winter night in Harvard Square, three friends were outside in the snow freezing and decided to go into Passim’s Coffee Shop to get out of the elements for a while. Somebody was playing that night, but when I walked in and saw it was none other than Guy Clark, I was excited. The three of us were literally blown off our fucking stools. He has been a favorite ever since. A friend of Emmylou.

Now we add Steve Earle and songwriter in the extreme Townes VanZandt to the mix and what we have here is an amazing evening at The Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. This event took place just fifteen months before VanZand’s death.

Yeah. It’s all-country programming today. What about it? This is one of the things that makes us different than all the rest. This will be about 6 or 7 hours of actual programming. The rest of the 24-hour cycle? All open stream with no commercials. No cost. No obligation. No credit card or personal data required. Radio like it used to be.

More Big Pink, Johnny Winter is Supreme, and We Celebrate Guy Clark’s Life, Wednesday, November 6, 2019

Good Morning, Ungovernables! Today would have been Guy Clark’s 77th birthday, and we’re doing the bookend thing to celebrate his extraordinary talent. If you don’t know Guy Clark, you should make it a point to get to  know him.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m.   Guy Clark, Steve Earle, and Townes Van Zandt: Live at the Bluebird Cafe

2:00 p.m.     The Band: Music From Big Pink

This is the stuff that legends are made of. In this case, that is certainly true as The Band is one of the finest musical ensembles ever.

5:00 p.m.     Johnny Winter: Live at Hondarribia (2011)

The real deal bluesman here.

9:00 p.m.     In the Spotlight: The Music of Guy Clark

This is another one of those guys whose passing leaves a hole, like Tom Petty and John Lennon, that just cannot be filled. I found this brilliant story teller quite by mistake in the middle of a snowstorm, trying to find somewhere to get inside from the nasty weather. Maybe later tonight as I’m listening to this, I’ll tell my story.

In between, it’s just kick-ass music at www.tinyurl.com/becomeungovernableradio

It’s The Band, Petty, The Pretenders and a Very Special Concert, September 22, 2019

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We’re starting to get back in the swing of things with the station. We’re in the midst of revamping and realigning our planned programming, as well as trying to get our “on demand” section going. Please be patient as we grow.

10:00 a.m.    Petty Theft: The Covers

No doubt in anybody’s mind: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers are the greatest cover band in music ever. Here they cover everybody from Carole King to Chuck Berry. Not to be missed.

1:00 p.m.      Steve Earle, Townes VanZandt, and Guy Clark “Live” at the Bluebird Cafe

I’m here to tell you this was a labor of love. The only outlet I could find that still sells this is Amazon. That’s not happening. In the immortal words of Liawatha Warren, “She persisted.” I did.  We’ve got it. And Jeff Bezos didn’t make a penny off it.

4:00 p.m.      In the Spotlight: The Music of The Band

8:00 p.m.      In the Spotlight: The Pretenders

There’s nothing to it. Just pull up a tab and tune in to:
