At 83, the Energizer Bunny of drummers is still on the road selling out venues wherever he goes.

Hey, it’s the beginning of the weekend and what better way to kick it off than with great music in the style of the old radio stations…except without the commercial advertising. We start the day and a new week with the first Mudcrutch album. This is the band that left Gainesville looking for musical fortune in L.A. It didn’t work out until later as the band split and morphed into Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers (we’re happy for that part). Later in 2008, Tom Petty reunited the original band and they finally found their place in the music world, releasing two albums and going on tour. Enjoy this one. They were a fine band in their own right.

He was a member of three legendary sixties bands in The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic and Blind Faith. He wrote Gimme’ Some Lovin’ at the age of fifteen. He also had a massively successful solo career. Tune him in tonight to see why he’s a Mermaid Lounge favorite.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Bluesiana Triangle by Art Blakey, Dr. John and David “Fathead” Newman NEW!

I stumbled upon this album several years ago because of my obsession with Dr. John, but it’s conception was really Art Blakey, an American jazz drummer. In addition to Dr. John on piano, guitar and vocals, it features David “Fathead” Newman, a jazz and rhythm & blues saxophonist, who is best known for his work with Ray Charles in the 50’s and early 60’s. The album is a collection of great jazz, blues and funk music that has become one of my favorites.

This is a great multi-artist album featuring the music of singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt, who wrote many songs including Pancho & Lefty, For The Sake of The Song, If I Needed You, and To Live Is To Fly. Many of his compositions are considered to be masterpieces of American songwriting. His personal story is a sad one as he struggled with substance abuse and alcoholism and a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, but it does not diminish this man’s contribution to American popular music. On this album you will hear Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, John Prine, Delbert McClinton, Lucinda Williams, Guy Clark, Nanci Griffith, and many more pay tribute to his brilliance.

Nope. It’s not a misspelling. Check out the album cover. Be that as it may, we continue our little journey down psychedelia lane with our AOW selection. Rather than me writing a tome here, I’ll give you the review by ‘Discover Music.’

You know an album is timeless when it takes a half-century to be properly appreciated. The Zombies were, however, right into the spirit of the times in 1968, evolving from their R&B origins and writing one of the most enduring peace-and-love anthems, Odyssey & Oracle’s only hit, “Time Of The Season.” But it took decades for most people to hear the rest of the album and realise how beautifully inventive it all was. It’s no secret that The Zombies were squeaky-clean compared to most 60s bands, but this album was visionary as they come.
