Led by sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell, the band started out with a third sister as a folk-rock band, but shifted to blues-rock after the original band broke up. With their great guitar work, particularly the steel guitar, they are often compared to the style of The Allman Brothers Band. Afternoon brings a live performance from Gregg Allman’s ‘other’ band at Wolfgang’s. Back in the day, Wolfgang’s was the place, a small 600-seat venue which is now defunct. Still, it’s easier to remember who did not play the venue than those who did. It was that popular.

I’m one of those people who likes the Dead’s studio music better than their live performances. Founding member and bass player Phil Lesh passed away this past week, and we air this in honor of him today.

I’ve been on the planet a long time. I’ve not heard Patty Griffin on the radio anywhere, but you’ll hear her here. Who is she? She’s a (primarily) folk singer, songwriter, guitar and piano player who is known for her stripped-down songwriting style. Her songs have been covered by many singers, including Emmylou Harris, Rory Block and Bette Midler. You won’t hear Stayin’ Alive here or any other Bee Gees music from that phase. That’s a promise.

When she’d had enough, she simply faded away, leaving us a legacy of fantastic music.
