It’s Tuesday Bluesday With Blues on The Bayou, a New T-Bone Walker ‘Spotlight’ and The Heartbreakers, October 15, 2024

Good morning, bluesologists and welcome to Tuesday Bluesday in The Mermaid Lounge! We open the programming with ‘The Best of Louisiana Blues’ EP, then we have T-Bone Walker and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers singing da blues.

Here’s your Tuesday Bluesday lineup:

9:00 a.m. The Best of Louisiana Blues: Various Artists

It’s time for blues on the bayou with Ray Charles, Lillian Glinn, Slim Harpo, Fats Domino, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Rodney Harris, Roosevelt Sykes, Shirley & Lee, Papa Lightfoot, Guitar Slim, Annie Laurie, Fats Matthews, Big Joe Turner, Little Walter, Big Boy Myles, Mary Butler, Erline Harris, Marcia Ball, Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, Professor Longhair, the Neville Brothers, Irma Thomas and more!

We’ve got a brand new Spotlight feature with T-Bone Walker, singer, songwriter, musician, band leader, and pioneer of the ‘jump’ blues and electric guitar genres.

8:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Sing The Blues

It’s no secret that Dr. Petty wanted he and the band to grow old sitting around singing the blues. He never got to see that day, but I’ll tell you what, The Heartbreakers did the blues proud while Petty was on the planet!

We’re busy on Tuesday Bluesday but there’s room for everyone here. In between our great blues programming, we’ve got our big, wide Open Stream of more than 27,000 songs. The button is below.

Monday We’ve Got a Couple of Live Performances From Van Morrison and The Doors Sandwiched Around a Townes Van Zandt Spotlight, October 14, 2024

Good morning, music lovers and welcome back to the work week. We’ve got some great music on tap for today mixed in with the great big wide Open Stream! And by the way, Happy Indigenous People’s Day because Christopher Columbus was a real piece of shit.

Here’s your Monday musical lineup:

10:00 a.m. Van Morrison Live at The Masonic Auditorium, San Francisco, CA, December 18, 1993

I will admit that I find Van Morrison a bit caustic as a human being, but the man is a legend and his shows are a virtual spiritual experience.

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Townes Van Zandt

Townes Van Zandt is the only songwriter that I’ve ever heard anyone come close to putting on a pedastal next to Bob Dylan. Some of the songs he has written, such as Pancho & Lefty, are considered masterpieces of American songwriting, and with good reason.

8:00 p.m. The Doors Live at The Pacific Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C., Canada, June 6, 1970

We close out the programming with the Lizard King and his band.

Don’t know what it’s like there, but it’s pretty rainy and gloomy here in the Boston area today. Good day to hunker down with some good music as my vacation comes to a close and I return to hardware hell tomorrow. By the way, the button is below.

We Celebrate Soul Today With Our Big ‘M Is For Motown’ EP, Then Spotlight Features From The Four Tops and Ann Peebles, On Sunday, October 13, 2024

Good morning, soul and R&B lovers and welcome to another day in The Lounge. Today, we get into the music that made America dance!

Here’s your soul music madness:

9:00 a.m. M Is For Motown: Various Artists

We celebrate the sound of soul with Barrett Strong, Eddie Kendricks, Eddie Holland, Edwin Starr, Gladys Knight & The Pips, The Jackson Five, Kim Weston, Jr. Walker & The All Stars, Marvin Gaye, Martha & The Vandellas, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Four Tops, The Isley Brothers, The Temptations, The Contours, Rare Earth, Mary Wells, Tammy Terrell, Diana Ross & The Supremes and more!

Another long-suffering project off the list with this one, and it’s about time. The Four Tops was was of the most commercially-successful quartets of the sixties and helped to establish Motown’s position in the music world.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Ann Peebles

You know who got me onto Ann Peebles? Believe it or not, Tom Petty. I first heard her music listening to his Buried Treasure show on Sirius XM. She is best remembered for her string of albums and hits from the seventies. Who knew? Not me. But I sure do now.

It’s Sunday, and that’s a day of rest. No matter what the raging capitalist world wants you to believe. You do not have to go out and spend money on Sunday. You can take a day off and spend it with us (not your money; your time). The button is below.

Our New ‘Three Part Harmonies’ EP, a CSNY Spotlight, and Live Allman Brothers are On Tap, Friday, October 11, 2024

Good morning, music lovers! We’re on the case today with a brand new EP of songs that use three-part harmonies, some live Allman Brothers Band and a CSNY Spotlight feature.

Here’s your Friday musical lineup:

We’ve got a brand new EP for you this morning of songs that employ three part harmonies. One of the things I noticed putting this together is just how many Beatle songs used it. In addition to The Beatles, you’ll hear Creedence Clearwater Revival, CSNY, The Beach Boys, Talking Heads, Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Yes, The Band, Stevie Nicks, The Doobie Brothers, Queen, Paul McCartney & Wings, The Mamas & The Papas, The Allman Brothers Band, The Grateful Dead, The Who, Boston and more!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young

Speaking of three part harmonies, we have a band here that used it plenty. The second best supergroup (sorry, The Traveling Wilburys are first) on the planet is a back this afternoon.

8:00 p.m. The Allman Brothers Band Live at The Cow Palace, Daly City, CA, December 31, 1973

We haven’t spun this one for a while, so it’s high time we did! This is a great New Year’s Even show from the Brothers.

We’re at the cusp of the weekend and we’re here to get you over the finish line with some great music. We’re on the air 24/7, we’re free and we don’t air commercial advertising. The magic button is below.

‘The British Are Coming’, The Pretenders and Dr. John are All On Tap As We Head For the Weekend, Thursday, October 10, 2024

Good morning, musicologists! We’re over the hump and on the downslide to the weekend. We’ve got our big British music EP, live Pretenders and a Dr. John Spotlight feature.

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. The British Are Coming: Various Artists

We start with music from the British Invasion and beyond with The Beatles, The Who, Dave Mason, Electric Light Orchestra, Petula Clark, The Zombies, The Hollies, Dusty Springfield, Small Faces, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Kinks, the Dave Clark Five, The Bee Gees, the Moody Blues, Rod Stewart, The Rolling Stones, Herman’s Hermits, Them, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Badfinger, The Yardbirds, Traffic, Elton John, Lulu, Pink Floyd, Yes, The Animals, Manfred Mann, Spencer Davis Group, Queen, Donovan and more!

4:00 p.m. The Pretenders Live at Laeiszhalle, Hamburg, Germany, June 23, 2009

Chrissie Hynde battled plenty of sexism before launching the Pretenders in 1978. At the time, the band didn’t have a name but recorded five tracks which eventually got them their start. She eventually named the band after the Platters song, The Great Pretender, which was a favorite song of her ex-boyfriend. The rest, as they say, is musical history. I am not what you’d call a ‘fan’ of the punk music genre, but The Pretenders under the leadership of Chrissie Hynde is one of the best bands on the planet, regardless of genre.

8:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Dr. John

We close out the evening with Dr. John, another music master who managed to combine New Orleans-fueled blues, jazz, R & B, soul and funk into a style all his own.

I’m giving you a break from the drivel of the drill. You know what you need to know about us. Now it’s time to push the button below.

We’re ‘Under The Influence’, Then It’s Emmylou Harris & The Desert Rose Band, and Later We Remember John Lennon On His Birthday, Wednesday, October 9, 2024

Good morning, music lovers! We’re here in The Mermaid Lounge and we’re going to be ‘Under The Influence’ for several hours before we move on to our other programming!

4:00 p.m. Emmylou Harris & The Desert Rose Band Live at The Nevada County Fairgrounds, Grass Valley, CA, August 3, 1986

Emmylou Harris has always managed to either pull together great bands, or team up with great bands. This time around she teams up with Chris Hillman’s Desert Rose Band for a great show.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of John Lennon

We close with a celebration of Lennon’s life and musical legacy as we celebrate what would have been his 83rd birthday today.

We make things simple here. All you have to do is use the button below to experience musical nirvana. We’re totally free. We do not request any personal information. We do not run commercial advertising. We’re all about the music. Try it. The magic button is below.

Friday Brings The Heartbreakers, Jimmy Cliff and Volume Three of Our ‘Love Street’ Series, October 4, 2024

Good morning, Tom Petty fans! Today begins our Petty weekend as we celebrate his life and musical legacy in all of its forms. It’s also the final installment of our ‘I See You Live on Love Street’ series…for now.

Fans gather to mourn the death of Tom Petty at his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles, California, after it had been announced that the musician had died at the age of 66. © Sheri Determan Where: Los Angeles, California, United States When: 02 Oct 2017 Credit: Sheri Determan/WENN.com

We’re nearly there (the weekend). And here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Live and Loving It!

We open up with a few hours of what we consider The Heartbreakers’ best live performances. However, we do concede that this particular playlist could use a serious updating. We will tend to that soon. In the meantime, it’s still pretty great.

3:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Jimmy Cliff

To understand the importance of Jimmy Cliff all you need to do is read the opening paragraph of his Wikipedia entry: “James ChambersOM (born 30 July 1944), known professionally as Jimmy Cliff, is a Jamaican skarocksteadyreggae and soul musician, multi-instrumentalist, singer, and actor. He is the only living reggae musician to hold the Order of Merit, the highest honour that can be granted by the Jamaican government for achievements in the arts and sciences.” Feel free to read on and learn more!

We close out the night with our final installment of this Laurel Canyon playlist with Little Feat, Linda Ronstadt, Harry Nilsson, Gram Parsons, Leon Russell, Crabby Appleton, Rita Coolidge, Dan Fogelberg, the Souther, Hillman, Furay Band and more!

We’re on the case 24/7 at no cost to the listening public. And there are no commercial interruptions so other folks can sell you stuff you don’t really need. The button is below.

At Midweek We Give You Our House EP, a J.J. Cale Spotlight Feature and The First Volume of Our New Love Street Playlist, Wednesday October 2, 2024

Good morning, music lovers and welcome to The Mermaid Lounge. We’ve got some great music today, including volume one of our new ‘I See You Live on Love Street’ playlist.

Here’s your midweek musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. The #BecomeUngovernable House Playlist: Various Artists

Yes, we start it all off with five hours of the music that inspired us to start this little experiment to begin with from The Beatles, Barry McGuire, The Temptations, Edwin Starr, Peter Tosh, Country Joe & The Fish, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, CSNY, Joan Baez, Pink Floyd, The Animals, Plastic Ono Band, The Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye, The Association, Phil Ochs, Tom Rush, Pete Seeger, The Band, Bob Dylan, Nina Simone, Janis Joplin and more!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of J. J. Cale

The man who invented the Oklahoma sound gave us a body of work that many have recorded over and over, yet fame eluded him. I’m not sure J.J. Cale ever needed fame, though. He was content with having the respect of his peers.

This is a new playlist for us and, while it does include many of the artists of our big EP, these are different songs from those artists and it also includes a bunch of artists that I bet you never knew passed through the Laurel Canyon music scene. Artists include The Monkees, The Association, Paul Revere & The Raiders, The Stone Poneys, The Doors, Scott McKenzie, The Byrds, Captain Beefheart and more! Volumes Two and Three will happen over Thursday and Friday.

We’re on 24/7 and we’re totally free all day every day. We’re not interested in tracking anyone because we’re not selling anything. And we don’t need no stinking credit cards. The button is below.

On Monday It’s Live Warren Zevon, the ‘Ladies Day Out’ EP and a Jackson Browne Spotlight, September 30, 2024

Good morning, musicologists! We close out another month in fine style, putting the ladies of music in charge for a large part of the day. Around that, we’ve got Warren Zevon and Jackson Browne.

Here’s your Monday, Monday lineup:

1:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

8:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Jackson Browne

We close out the programming with a Jackson Browne Spotlight that hits the spot. The man is a legend.
