11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: The Main Refrain by Wendy Waldman NEW!

The Main Refrain is one of the finest albums ever made from someone many may never have heard of. Those of us who were listening to Linda Ronstadt and Maria Muldaur, however, know Wendy Waldman because they introduced her to their followers. Fame may have eluded her over the years, but her contributions as a writer, singer and producer are immense. She remains one of the most well-respected singers of her generation among her peers. Linda Ronstadt appears on this album, and they combine their voices beautifully on The Eagle and The Owl. Pay attention, children.

3:00 p.m. The Sixties Rotation, Volume 2: Various Artists

Our monthly homage to the inspiration for this radio station with more than five uninterrupted hours of streaming. The Beatles, The Grateful Dead, The Rolling Stones, Canned Heat, The Guess Who, The Doors, The Who, Janis Joplin, Them, The Zombies, Jimi Hendrix, The Searchers and many others take a trip through The Mermaid Lounge today.

Yes, There is Even a Sunday Session at The College of Rock n’ Roll Knowledge!

Good Morning, Students! We are back with yet another lesson in the fine art of rock n’ roll trivia here in The Mermaid Lounge. We have all the salient rock n’ roll details every day.

The Star Club, Hamburg, Germany. The Beatles blew the doors off the place in 1962.

Here’s today’s lesson:

November 15, 1932: Petula Clark (born Sally Olwen Clark) is born in Epsom, Surrey, England. Later in life, songs like Downtown and I Know A Place would make her famous.

November 15, 1956: Johnny & The Moondogs (consisting of John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison) appear in the final round of Britain’s TV Star Search at The Hippodrome Theatre, Manchester, where they perform Think It Over and It’s So Easy. Unfortunately, the did not have enough money to stay overnight, so they returned home before being able to finish the competition.

November 15, 1965: The Rolling Stones debut on NBC-TV’s Hullabaloo Show where they sing Get Off Of My Cloud.

On this day, The Beatles also finished recording Rubber Soul.

November 15, 1966: The Jefferson Airplane record Somebody To Love, which would reach #5 in in the summer of 1967.

Also, The Doors officially sign with Elektra Records in a deal for the band to release seven albums.

November 15, 1969: Janis Jopin is arrested at her concert in Tampa, Florida, and is charged with using “vulgar and indecent language.” The charges were later dropped.

November 15, 1972: Although I’m generally not into ‘soft rock’ on this day America released a most excellent album called Homecoming. We will soon feature it as our Album of The Week.

And finally, Hamburg, German’y’s famous Star Club — where a very young group called The Beatles once played — announced it would be closing its doors forever.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday! Today, We Have Dylan & The Heartbreakers On Tour, Janis Joplin Live, and Little Feat, October 6, 2020

Good Morning, Music Lovers! It’s another Tuesday Bluesday in The Mermaid Lounge, and we’ve got a great line-up!

Here’s today’s musical programming:

11:00 a.m. Bob Dylan with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Live at the Sydney Entertainment Centre (1986)

This was recorded over two nights on part of Dylan’s True Confessions tour. Tom Petty credits Dylan with teaching The Heartbreakers the importance of spontaneity on stage. These two guys were just great together. It’s amazing how many people Tom Petty was able to mesh with musically. That’s the sign of an artist comfortable in his own skin.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Waiting For Columbus by Little Feat

Again, some of the best live music ever pressed onto vinyl. Little Feat defied definition. And I will say it again: They are the most underrated band in rock music history.

7:00 p.m. Tuesday Bluesday! Janis Joplin & The Cosmic Blues Band, Live at The Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, April 11, 1969

She’s got dem old Kozmic Blues again, mama. And she’s belting them out here today.

We’re On Our Final Week Of The Summer of Love, So We Focus on The Sixties Today, Sunday, August 23, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! We’re on our final week of The Summer of Love, so we’re focusing on the Sixties today.

1:00 p.m.   Album of the Week: Younger Than Yesterday, The Byrds   NEW!

This was The Byrds’ fourth studio album, released in February of 1967. With this album, they continued their foray into psychedelic music…with a touch of jazz thrown in for good measure. Chris Hillman began to take the spotlight, revealing himself to be a formidable singer-songwriter.

4:00 p.m.   The Beatles: The Transformative Years

The Beatles also moved into the world of psychedelic music in the latter half of the sixties. The album Revolver was really the album that catapulted the band forward in this direction. This is a great playlist.

8:00 p.m.   Janis Joplin Live at Winterland 1968

To close out the evening’s festivities, we hear from one of the most important, influential female rockers of the sixties live on stage at Winterland, Janis Joplin.

Today, It’s Janis Joplin With Big Brother for The Summer of Love, and We Celebrate The October “Wildflowers and All the Rest” Release with a TPATH Playlist, Friday, August 21, 2020

While we celebrate the music of our past, the future looms ahead of us with a much-anticipated Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers release. Today, on a light-programming day (meaning a lot of Open Stream), we celebrate both.

Here’s your Friday line-up:

12:00 p.m.   Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Deep Cuts & B-Sides

You know, people, any one of the songs on this playlist could have been a hit. Not like this band’s hits were junk, like some others. Far from it. But this band produced so much good music it’s incredible. And it’s incredible that this band was firing on all cylinders 40 years later, because Hypnotic Eye, their last studio release in 2014 was about as good as they get. They are the house band for a reason.

7:00 p.m.    The Best of The Summer of Love! Big Brother and the Holding Company Featuring Janis Joplin   NEW!

This debut album was released in August 1967. Not surprisingly, it was re-released one month later with Janis Joplin’s name added to the cover and a couple of additional songs thrown in. We have it here for you today.

Come on, Empire dwellers, let’s get our shit together. Europe, Asia, and other more far-flug areas are all over this station. As usual, the toddlers are bringing up the rear.

This Day is MADE for The Summer of Love! The Doors’ Album “Strange Days” is Our Album of The Week, and Today is Our Sixties Sunday, August 16, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! This was one of the easiest programming days on the planet for me. Everything just fell into place. I just love that shit.

Both The Beatles and The Doors had two album releases in 1967. This was the second for The Doors and it is most definitely Album of the Week-worthy even though we did feature it once last week. So, here it is again!

3:00 p.m.     The Sixties Rotation, Volume 2: Various Artists

This is always my favorite Sunday of the month. The only question ever is do I choose Volume 1 or Volume 2. Today, the decision was easy because it’s everything the latter part of the sixties were about musically. Features The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, The Jefferson Airplane, Bob Dylan, The Yardbirds, The Beach Boys, Janis Joplin, The Mamas & The Papas, Donovan, The Zombies, and so much more. Over five hours of uninterrupted sixties streaming!

Singer. Songwriter. Producer. Marvin Gaye helped shape the Motown sound, earning himself a string of hits along with the title,  The Prince of Motown. Today, we give him his due.

7:00 p.m.     The Best of The Summer of Love! The Monterey International Pop Festival  NEW!

Before Woodstock in 1969, there was the Monterey International Pop Festival held at the Monterey County Fairgrounds in California from June 16-18, 1967. The Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Who, Johnny Rivers, Simon & Garfunkel, The Grateful Dead, The Mamas & The Papas and many others all graced the stage. It also marked the introduction of Otis Redding to the world.

The Kozmic Blues Band was but one of the bands that Janis fronted after Big Brother & The Holding Company and before Full Tilt Boogie, as she continued her quest for the “perfect” band. There isn’t much information out there about the band, other than the members’ names. The link I provided is just about the best info you can find out there, and it’s a fan site.

3:00 p.m.     Album of the Week: Good Souls Better Angels by Lucinda Williams

6:00 p.m.     In the Spotlight: The Music of The Doors

Like Janis Joplin, The Doors’ leader, Jim Morrison, is one of the members of the ’27 Club’, the rockers who died in their 27th year. There are several others in this group, including Gram Parsons, Jimi Hendrix, and Brian Jones. The Doors were only a factor for four years but, in four years, they made some seriously great fucking music.

This may seem like a morbid discussion, but a number of musicians have died in their 27th year. Kurt Cobain. Robert Johnson. Amy Winehouse. But three of the most famous? Janis Joplin. Jimi Hendrix. Jim Morrison. All dead at 27. All members of the ’27 Club.’

4:00 p.m.    Album of the Week: Sargeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles

This is arguably the greatest album of all time. Not only was the music brilliant, but so was the album packaging. It was the first album to open like a book, and the first to feature the lyrics printed on the cover. The front cover photograph remains a conversation piece to this day.

7:00 p.m.    The Beach Boys: The Smile Sessions   NEW!

It is said that Brian Wilson was the creative force behind The Beach Boys. Artists from Linda Ronstadt to Paul McCartney consider him a musical genius, but all of the members conributed to the whole. These sessions prove that The Beach Boys weren’t just another ‘surf music’ band (although they were pretty damned good at that too).
