It’s Simply Sunday With EJ’s AOW and Volume Two of Our Sixties Rotation, January 28, 2024

Good morning, music lovers! Sundays are simple here: A couple of programs and our big, wide Open Stream. We start things off with another album celebrathing it’s 50th birthday.

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

This was Elton John’s eighth studio album, released in June of 1974. It was his fourth no. 1 album in the U.S. and his third in the UK. The critics didn’t like it much, but his fans sure did as it went double platinum. Do I think it’s his best? Nope. But there were more good than bad songs on this one, and I’m talking about good songs beyond the two singles: The Bitch Is Back (one of my favorite Elton John songs) and Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me. Happy 50th Birthday, Caribou.

3:00 p.m.  The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two: Various Artists

We’ve got the second volume of our great sixties rotation this afternoon with The Mamas & The Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Buffalo Springfield, Sly & The Family Stone, The Temptations, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Roy Orbison, The Yardbirds, The Animals, Linda Ronstadt, The Byrds, Chuck Berry, James Brown, Blind Faith, Spencer Davis Group, Elvis Presley, The Box Tops, The Doors, Marvin Gaye, B. B. King, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Wilson Pickett, The Band, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, The Ronettes, The Kinks Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jimmy Cliff, Velvet Underground and more!

On Saturday We Offer Songs About Color, Loggins & Messina’s AOW, and Some ‘Live’ Poco Later, January 13, 2024

Good morning, weekenders! Saturday has arrived and we have some serious rain here in the Boston area…in January. That, my friends, is not the norm. But neither is our little radio station.

Here’s your musical merriment for today:

9:00 a.m.  Color My World: Various Artists

Color is always a popular topic in music. Just ask The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Donovan, Booker T & The MG’s, Electric Light Orchestra, Procol Harum, Joni Mitchell, The Who, Amy Winehouse, Sam & Dave, Badfinger, Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Elvis Costello, Neil Young, Jefferson Airplane, The Hollies, Elvis Presley, Janis Joplin, Cream, Marvin Gaye, Lucinda Williams, John Hiatt, J. D. Souther, Linda Ronstadt and more!

4:00 p.m.  Album of The Week: Sittin’ In by Loggins & Messina FINAL AIRING!

Today will be this fine album’s swan song, but it does reside in our standard rotation, so you will keep hearing the music. Tomorrow we’ll have a brand new album.

8:00 p.m.  Poco Live at Fairleigh-Dickinson University, Teaneck, NJ, November 2, 1973

Here’s a fine country-rock band that gets neither the credit nor the attention it deserves, but we aim to change that in 2024. We start tonight.

We are here spinning the tunes (although nothing is really spinning here in The Lounge) all day and all night long at no charge to the general public and with no commercial interruption. What are y’all waiting for?

Today we focus on the mid-to-late portion of this great generation of music with The Beatles, The Mamas & The Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, Buffalo Springfield, Sly & The Family Stone, The Temptations, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Roy Orbison, The Yardbirds, The Animals, Janis Joplin, Linda Ronstadt, Wilson Pickett, The Band, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, The Ronettes, The Kinks, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jimmy Cliff, Velvet Underground and more!

We certainly have some great music on tap for you today. I’m on my third day of early morning shifts, so The Music Mermaid is on duty today and she’ll be on morning duty for one more day tomorrow. We’re taxing her fins this week for sure.

Saturday Brings Elvis’ AOW, Our ‘Under The Influence’ EP and Walter Becker-Donald Fagan as Our Singer-Songwriters, November 18, 2023

Good morning, weekenders! Yes, it’s finally Saturday and The Music Mermaid has her selections all queued up for this fine day. Read on for the details!

Here are your musical details:

9:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Elvis Presley by Elvis Presley FINAL AIRING!

We bid farewell to Elvis’ debut album today, a fine piece of music from what I personally consider his best time, right around 1956 and the Nashville/Sun sessions. Tomorrow, we’ll have a new album.

12:00 p.m. Under the Influence: Various Artists

Ah, yes. In my youth, some of my best times were spent under the influence. Today, you’ll hear Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Arlo Guthrie, Jackson Browne, Bob Dylan, Jefferson Airplane, Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen, Donovan, Glen Frey, John Lee Hooker, Jonathan Edwards, Linda Ronstadt, Little Feat, The Traveling Wilburys, The Temptations, Small Faces, Steely Dan, The Beatles, Talking Heads, Neil Young, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Velvet Underground, The Rolling Stones, Dave Van Ronk, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Jackson Browne, Steve Winwood, Led Zeppelin, Harry Chapin, The Band, The Fraternity of Man and more!

There’s a thing out there on social media asking the best bands of the seventies. Had it not been for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Steely Dan would have been my number one. They’re a very close number two. We love them here in The Mermaid Lounge, and they are that good because of the singer-songwriter duo that put them on the map.

Thursday Puts Us ‘Under The Influence’, Brings Our AOW, and Cream’s Final Live Performance at Royal Albert Hall, October 19, 2023

Good morning, workers! We are heading toward the weekend once again. We’ll be there before you know it, and we’ve got some great music to make the trip brighter.

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Under The Influence: Various Artists

Yes, some legal. Some not. Come on. We’ve all been there. You’ll hear The Byrds, Arlo Guthrie, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bob Dylan, Jefferson Airplane, Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen, Donovan, Glen Frey, John Lee Hooker, Jonathan Edwards, Little Feat, Linda Ronstadt, The Traveling Wilburys, The Temptations, Small Faces, Steely Dan, The Beatles, Talking Heads, Neil Young, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Velvet Underground, the Rolling Stones, Dave Van Ronk, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Jackson Browne, Steve Winwood, Led Zeppelin, Harry Chapin, The Band, The Fraternity of Man and more!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Duets by Linda Ronstadt

7:00 p.m. Cream Live at Royal Albert Hall, London, UK, November 26, 1968

This was Cream’s final live performance ever broadcast on the BBC. Don’t miss it!

We’re rolling now, citizens. Everything here is downhill toward the weekend. We’ll help you get there in style with some great 24/7 music and some fun programming in between all that wide Open Stream.

We’re Back to Simple Sunday Here With Our AOW by The Band and the ‘Under The Influence’ EP, September 17, 2023

Good morning, weekenders! We’re back to our keep-it-simple Sunday mode here with our Album of The Week and our ‘Under The Influence’ EP.

Here’s you musical landscape:

A Mermaid Lounge favorite is back today. We’re of the opinion that The Band never made a bad album. This one is no exception, although it didn’t get the attention it deserved after their incredible run of Music From Big Pink, The Band (the amazing brown album) and Stage Fright. It’s our Album of The Week starting today.

3:00 p.m. Under The Influence: Various Artists

Likewise, we believe there’s nothing like being under the influence on the weekend. You’ll hear from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Arlo Guthrie, The Byrds, Bob Dylan, Jefferson Airplane, Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen, Donovan, Glen Frey, John Lee Hooker, Jonathan Edwards, Linda Ronstadt, Little Feat, The Traveling Wilburys, The Temptations, Small Faces, Steely Dan, The Beatles, Talking Heads, Neil Young, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Velvet Underground, the Rolling Stones, Dave Van Ronk, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Jackson Browne, Steve Winwood, Led Zeppelin, Harry Chapin, The Band, The Fraternity of Man and more!

Onward With the ‘Color My World’ EP, Jimmy Buffett’s AOW and CSNY In the Spotlight, Thursday, September 7, 2023

Good morning, musicologists and welcome to the downslide to the weekend! We start it all off with our ‘Color My World’ multi-artist (and very musically eclectic) EP today!

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Color My World: Various Artists

Songs with colors in the title, lyrics or both. Even the whiff of color puts it on this list with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Donovan, Booker T. & The MGs, Electric Light Orchestra, Procol Harum, Joni Mitchell, The Who, Amy Winehouse, Sam & Dave, Badfinger, Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Elvis Costello, Neil Young, Jefferson Airplane, The Hollies, Elvis Presley, Janis Joplin, Cream, Marvin Gaye, Lucinda Williams, John Hiatt, J.D. Souther, Linda Ronstadt and more!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Changes In Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes by Jimmy Buffett

We’ve got one more airing for you after today and that’ll be sometime on Saturday. Get on it while you can!

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

Right there behind The Traveling Wilburys on my Supergroup Meter, although quite dysfunctional compared to The Wilburys. They are the original drama llamas of music, but that didn’t stop them from making some of the best stuff on the planet.

We’ve passed the midweek point now. It’s all downhill to the weekend from here. This is your opportunity to get there in style. We’re on 24/7 at no charge and turning on the tunes is hassle-free. Just push play.

We’re in the Wayback Machine With Volume Two of ‘The Sixties Rotation’ EP, ‘Live’ Janis, and the Jefferson Airplane In The Spotlight Tonight, on Monday, August 28, 2023

B. King, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Wilson Pickett, The Band, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, The Ronettes, The Kinks, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jimmy Cliff, Velvet Underground and more!

4:00 p.m. Janis Joplin Live at Winterland Ballroom, San Francisco, CA, April 12, 1968

Janis played two consecutive nights here, and this recording is from the first show.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of The Jefferson Airplane

We close out today’s sixties programming with one of the bands that helped to define the San Francisco psychedelic music sound as we put Grace Slick and The Jefferson Airplane In the Spotlight!

It’s all sixties today, and that’s a good thing. It’s the music that helped to inspire us to start this radio station. We’re on 24/7 and you’d be hard pressed to hear a repeat during any given day. We’re also totally free of charge and free of commercial advertising. What could be better?

It’s Simply Sunday With Our New AOW From the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and ‘The Psychedelic Express’ EP, August 20, 2023

We keep it pretty simple here in The Mermaid Lounge on Sundays. A couple of great programs with a lot of big, wide Open Stream. This Sunday is no different.

Get on board with today’s programming:

Paul Butterfield Blues Band is widely regarded as one of the greatest electric blues bands ever, whose contributions to the genre during the 60s and 70s cannot be denied, but it’s safe to say a lot of Butterfield’s fans were not enthralled with this release. That’s what happens when people get pidgeon-holed into doing the same thing over and over. Do I think it’s one of their best? Nope. I don’t. But I don’t regret owning it, or playing it as our AOW.

3:00 p.m. The Psychedelic Express: Various Artists

Hell, if the AOW disappoints, drop a tab and tune in to The Psychedelic Express where you’ll hear Vanilla Fudge, The Chambers Brothers, The Beatles, Electric Prunes, The Animals, Jefferson Airplane, Blues Image, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Donovan, Strawberry Alarm Clock, The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Traffic, Cream, Dr. John, Procol Harum, Fleetwood Mac, The Who, Canned Heat, Yes, Electric Light Orchestra, Tommy James & The Shondells, Mudcrutch Blind Faith, Grateful Dead, Velvet Underground, Big Brother & The Holding Company and more!

Saturday Brings the Final Airing of Our AOW, the ‘Color My World’ EP, and Gregg Allman as Our Featured Singer-Songwriter, August 5, 2023

Good morning, musicologists! It’s Saturday in The Lounge, my final day at work, and The Music Mermaid is all psyched up to run the show for you today!

Here’s Saturday’s lineup:

9:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Go Cat Go by Carl Perkins & Friends FINAL AIRING!

We say goodbye today to a great album by Carl Perkins and his many friends, like George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Tom Petty, Paul Simon and more! Get it while you can!

11:00 a.m. Color My World: Various Artists

Five hours of open stream with a theme here with colors of all kinds being the topic. You’ll hear The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Donovan, Booker T. & The MGs, Electric Light Orchestra, Procol Harum, Joni Mitchell, The Who, Any Winehouse, Sam & Dave, Badfinger, Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Elvis Costello, Neil Young, Jefferson Airplane, The Hollies, Elvis Presley, Janis Joplin, Cream, Marvin Gaye, Lucinda Williams, John Hiatt, J.D. Souther, Linda Ronstadt and more!

The legendary singer, songwriter, keyboardist (sometimes guitarist) and co-founder of The Allman Brothers Band is our featured singer-songwriter this coming week. He was a musical pioneer who combined traditional blues with rock, jazz and country to help give the Allman Brothers Band their amazing and unique sound. Gregg Allman became the heart and soul of the band after his brother died, and he did himself and Duane proud.
