The early evening brings us a real treat, as we put Dusty Springfield In the Spotlight. Dusty brought us her special brand of blue-eyed soul for nearly five decades, and she’s a Mermaid Lounge favorite for sure.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at Barton Hall, Cornell University, New York, May 8, 1977

This is not a new performance, but a requested repeat. We’ve had a few people ask for this one over the past month or so. The last time we played it was back in 2020, so it’s like new. Many consider this to be the finest live Grateful Dead performance ever. I don’t know how you choose one out of the many they’ve had over the years, but here it is!

It’s Saturday and the first full day of the weekend. What could be better than adding some great music to the mix, free of charge, with no mouthy DJs and no commercial interruption? Come on. You know you want to.

Laurel Canyon was a breeding ground for some of the biggest names in music for two generations. It started in the sixties with bands like The Doors, The Lovin’ Spoonful, and The Mamas and The Papas, John Mayall, and spilled over into the seventies with Linda Ronstadt, The Eagles, Jackson Browne and many more. In addition to those artists, you’ll hear The Monkees, The Beach Boys, Joni Mitchell, Manassas, Bonnie Raitt, John David Souther, Canned Heat, Harry Nilsson, Carole King, James Taylor and more!

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Shawn Colvin

Shawn Colvin is one of those amazing singer-songwriters who has, somehow, flown under much of the radar out there for many years. She is best known for her 1998 Grammy Award-winning song, Sunny Came Home, but that’s not all she’s accomplished in her career. You can read more about Shawn Colvin right here. And best of all, if you don’t know much about her music, you can tune it in tonight and see for yourself.

The other very exciting guest is kick-ass violinist Scarlet Rivera, who I got to know from Bob Dylan’s Desire album, and his Rolling Thunder tour in ’75. I was so taken with her violin on Desire, that I went to see her live in concert back in the days of the Boston Music Hall.

We bid a fond farewell today to our Album of The Week, what I call the musical shot heard ’round the world. During his Musicares speech in 2017, Mr. Petty said when he heard The Beatles for the first time he had his eyes opened, like everybody else. We agree. Tomorrow, however, we will have a new selection.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Fillmore East, New York, January 2, 1970 NEW!

We have featured several of The Dead’s road performances from the Fillmore West, but this is our first airing of a show from The Fillmore East, a venue that certainly doesn’t get as much attention as it’s West Coast counterpart, but a great venue that hosted some amazing acts as well. It was part of that cross-pollination project. This is another new soundboard recording. Enjoy.

Saturday is always a good day here in The Mermaid Lounge. This one is no exception. Hey, I have to serve the retail masses, but we’ve got you covered. The Godfather of The British Blues has recently announced his retirement from the road in his 80th year, but today we’ve got a new live performance to give you from 2010 in the UK. The good news is that Mayall also just released a new album, The Sun is Shining Down, which will soon be our Album of The Week.

Today is the second airing of our latest Album of The Week, and it’s undoubtedly one of our favorites here in The Mermaid Lounge.

Tom Petty used to say he envisioned The Heartbreakers sitting around in chairs when they grew old and singing the blues. Unfortunately, they didn’t quite get there, but they sure did love and respect ‘da blues’ and made some great bluesy tunes along the way. We’ve got them here for you today to close out our blues programming.

When they first came out, we were convinced they were straight out of a Louisiana bayou. In fact, they are four guys from Berkeley. And they are In the Spotlight here tonight.

Tune us in. We’ve already got Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Faroe Islands, Russian Federation, Sweden, France, Australia, Canada, Brazil, South Africa, Japan, and Mexico on this morning. Some of these guys have been on all night! Switzerland has been tuned in for two days! Either the guy is dead or he really likes the music.
