We Begin June With Some Psychedelic Music, Live Otis Redding, and a Karla Bonoff ‘Spotlight,’ Sunday, June 1, 2025

Good morning, music lovers. We open the month with one of our favorite genres here, psychedelic music. Then we move onto The Big O and singer-songwriter Karla Bonoff!

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

9:00 a.m. The Psychedelic Express: Various Artists

There are the artists who invented psychedelic rock and there are the artists who keep the genre alive. We’ve got it all, including The Beatles, Vanilla Fudge, The Chambers Brothers, the Electric Prunes, The Animals, Jefferson Airplane, Blues Image, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Donovan, The Byrds, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Traffic, Cream, Dr. John, Procol Harum, Fleetwood Mac, The Who, Canned Heat, Yes, Electric Light Orchestra, Tommy James & The Shondells, Mudcrutch, Blind Faith, Grateful Dead, Velvet Underground, Big Brother & The Holding Company and more!

4:00 p.m. Otis Redding Live at The Whiskey A Go Go, W. Hollywood, CA, April 9 & 10, 1966

The Big O left us all far too soon. He never got to see the heights his music would have taken him to. His hits and his legend were posthumous events. It amazes me to this day that people refer to Aretha Franklin’s classic anthem, Respect, without knowing that it was written by Otis Redding. Today we have a rare live performance by Otis Redding from the legendary Whiskey.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Karla Bonoff

We close the programming with an artist who has written many great songs made famous by artists like Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Alison Krauss and Wynonna Judd. Tonight we get to hear her sing them.

It’s a brand new month, and we’re off to a great start here. We’ve got some new summer music coming up as we prepare for a long, hot summer here. I have great foreboding under the present regime, but we will carry on here. Stay with us. The button is below.

Sunday It’s ‘The Original Sixties Rotation EP, a Jerry Jeff Walker ‘Spotlight’, and The All-Girl Revue: Volume Five, May 18, 2025

Good morning, weekenders. We’ve got a really eclectic collection of programming here today starting with our Original Sixties Rotation, then it’s some outlaw country and the ladies bringing up the rear!

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

9:00 a.m. The Original Sixties Rotation, Volume 5: Various Artists

We kick the day off with the songs from our favorite generation of music. You’ll hear The Beatles (of course), The Monkees, Sonny & Cher, Joe Cocker, Little Eva, Simon & Garfunkel, The Everly Brothers, The Searchers, Dusty Springfield, The Drifters, The Dave Clark Five, Johnny Rivers, Bob Dylan, The Animals, Petula Clark, The Rolling Stones, Procol Harum, The Turtles, The Temptations, The Animals, Del Shannon, James Brown, Fontella Bass, Blues Image, The Four Tops, Booker T & The MGs, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Them, The Left Banke, Fats Domino, and more!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Jerry Jeff Walker

I saw Jerry Jeff Walker for the first time when he opened a show for Little Feat at The Harvard Square Theater and that’s when I knew he was a keeper. My favorite JJW song is, without a doubt, Very Short Time. The guy is a pioneer of the outlaw music genre, and we love it.

8:00 p.m. The All-Girl Revue, Volume 5: Various Artists

The ladies hold court for the close of our programming tonight. You’ll hear from Linda Ronstadt, Marcia Ball, Irma Thomas, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Shawn Colvin, Judy Collins, Maria Muldaur, Karla Bonoff, Rosanne Cash, Jackie DeShannon, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and more!

We’re still on the weekend, kids, so kick back and enjoy the radio station that plays more women’s music than any other station on the planet. We’re on 24/7. We’re totally free, and there are no strings. The button is below.

Sunday Brings Our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP, Live Townes Van Zandt, and a Karla Bonoff ‘Spotlight’ Feature, December 8, 2024

Good morning, music lovers! Life on the road and traveling are certainly two popular topics in music and we’ve got a great playlist today, followed by Townes Van Zandt live in London and closing with Karla Bonoff.

Here’s today’s musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

We’re on the road with Canned Heat, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Steve Miller Band, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Dan Fogelberg, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Ronstadt, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Paul McCartney & Wings, The Eagles, Little Feat, The Band, Willie Nelson, Edwin Starr, Janis Joplin, Guy Clark, The Byrds, Asleep at The Wheel, Mudcrutch, The Traveling Wilburys, Tom Rush, Buffalo Springfield, The Guess Who and more!

4:00 p.m. Townes Van Zandt Live at Union Chapel, London, UK, April 29, 1994

The late, great singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt is in The Lounge this afternoon, possibly the only artist to approach the songwriting ability of Bob Dylan. Indeed, the discussion of whom is better continues. However, I say that we don’t have to continually pit one artist against the other. I love them both.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Karla Bonoff

Speaking of singer-songwriters, we close out the evening with a ‘Spotlight’ feature with the great Karla Bonoff.

Before, in between and after our programming, we give you our big, wide Open Stream of incredible music. We don’t charge you. We don’t track you. We don’t ask you for information. The button is below.

It’s ‘Live’ Steely Dan, a Beach Boys Spotlight, and Volume Five of The All-Girl Revue on Friday, September 6, 2024

Good morning, musicologists! We are on the cusp of the weekend and we’ve got three great pieces of programming for you today, starting with some new ‘live’ music from one of our favorites, Steely Dan!

Here’s your end-of-the-work-week lineup:

Undoubtedly one of the best bands to come out of the seventies. This was a stop on their very ambitious Art Crimes Tour, and many consider this performance one of their best-ever shows. Give it a listen.

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Beach Boys

We haven’t cued this one up in a while. Is there a better band that signifies the sounds of summer? We don’t think so. And then, there’s the genius of Brian Wilson.

8:00 p.m. The All-Girl Revue: Various Artists

We had a handful of these shorter shows from the ladies and, eventually, we rolled them into ‘Ladies Day Out’ and added even more! These come in handy when we need a fix. You’ll hear Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, Jackie DeShannon, Carole King, Linda Ronstadt, Rosanne Cash, Joan Baez, Janis Joplin, Karla Bonoff, Wendy Waldman, Marcia Ball, Irma Thomas, Aretha Franklin, Judy Collins and more!

I’m here listening with you until retail hell calls, when The Music Mermaid will take over and help you through the afternoon. We’re on 24/7. We’re totally free. And there’s absofuckinglutely no commercial advertising. We’re all about the music.

Back to the Working World With Bobbie Gentry, Karla Bonoff and Our Petty Month Finale, Monday, October 30, 2023

Good morning, working folks! It’s back to the real world, and we’re here to see that your transition is a more pleasant one with some great programming.

Here’s your musical lineup:

10:00 a.m. Bobbie Gentry Live at BBC Studios, London, UK 1968-1969

The reclusive Bobbie Gentry brought along two friends in James Taylor and Donovan when she graced the studios at the BBC. Gentry was a brilliant songwriter who only ever wanted to write for others, so she was a reluctant star. She eventually just walked away, but left some great music behind.

3:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Karla Bonoff

Here we have another brilliant female songwriter who has helped to put other singers on the map, like Linda Ronstadt. In turn, Linda Ronstadt has shone a light on Karla Bonoff. And that’s how this works. As it turns out, and as Ronstadt will tell you, Karla Bonoff can sing. She’s in our Spotlight today.

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Piazza Napoleone, Lucca, Italy, June 9, 2012

We close out Tom Petty’s birthday month with a great live performace from Lucca, Italy.

Hey, it’s Monday. It happens once a week and there’s not a damned thing we can do about it. But there is something we can do to make it less bleak, and that is to play great music. We’re here 24/7 with no commercial interruption and at no charge to you!

It’s the Final Airing of Karla Bonoff’s AOW, ‘The British Are Coming’ EP, and We Introduce Dolly Parton as This Week’s Featured Singer-Songwriter on Saturday, April 29, 2023

8:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Dolly Parton NEW!

What can you say about Dolly Parton? She’s been a fixture on the country music scene since 1956, partnered up with Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris to form one of music’s most formidable supergroups (Trio), and is still active today. During that time, it is estimated that she has written about 3,000 songs. They have been covered by so many artists, including Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Tina Turner, Maria Muldaur, Waylon Jennings, Whitney Houston, The Incredible String Band and many more. You know, people keep talking about Whitney Houston’s cover of Parton’s I Will Always Love You, probably because it was associated with a movie. In reality, that cover is owned by Linda Ronstadt. Even Dolly says that. But I digress. This week, Dolly Parton is our featured singer-songwriter, and she’s doing the singing.

Hell, it’s Saturday. Forget the yard work and house painting. Tune in. Turn on. And drop out with us as we play you the finest music on the planet at no charge to you. We’re on 24/7 and we’re uninterrupted by rampant capitalism.

Lucinda Williams, a great singer-songwriter and performer, in a recorded performance at the Moody Theatre in Austin for the Austin City Limits show. She’s defnitely a Mermaid Lounge favorite. She’s a friend of Tom’s. He knew how great she was.

She established herself as a masterful songwriter, writing eight of the ten songs on the album. Not to be missed.
