Today’s NOLA Treat? The Magnolia Sisters! We’ve Also Got Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Updated All-Girl Revue Too, on Friday, February 19, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Today is a very exciting day here in The Mermaid Lounge as we feature The Magnolia Sisters, the only all-woman authentic Cajun music band. We’ve also got Creedence and our newly-updated All-Girl Revue Too.

This amazing collection of women is anchored by Ann Savoy (pronounced sa’vwa), perhaps one of the most accomplished musicians on the planet that nobody ever really heard of. I urge you to read about her here, and to check out her website here. This is the kind of stuff I live for. I first heard her when she recorded with Linda Ronstadt as The Zozo Sisters. They made a brilliant Grammy-award nominated album together called Adieu False Heart. This collaboration marked the first time Savoy recorded in English. Ever since then, I’ve been on a hunt for her music and was able to score two CDs by The Magnolia Sisters. These were added to the station’s standard rotation last evening. The hunt continues until I am satisfied, as she has also recorded with her husband, her children, and with her swing band, Ann Savoy and Her Sleepless Knights.

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Creedence Clearwater Revival

One of my all-time favorite bands here. It’s only fitting that we play them during our New Orleans Mardi Gras week. Here we have four guys from Berkeley, California who sound like they were born on the bayou (pun intended, of course).

7:00 p.m. The All-Girl Revue Too UPDATED!

This was the second all-woman playlist we ever put together for the radio station, and I spent time yesterday updating and expanding the selection. We are continually amazed how women are ignored in the music world, and we intend to increase our focus on female singers and musicians. In this playlist, you will hear Bonnie Raitt, Susan Tedeschi, Linda Ronstadt, Norah Jones, Patti Smith, Mary Wells, Aretha Franklin, Amy Winehouse, Emmylou Harris, Laura Nyro, Shawn Colvin, Carly Simon and more!

First, I can’t believe they’re inducting rappers into what is supposed to be the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. That’s enough of an insult. But to be inducting Jay-Z and Carole King in 2021? What the fuck is up with that. It’s an insult to Carole King, frankly. It’s like the Nobel Peace Prize now. A collective joke. But I digress…

Badfinger was one of the truly bonafide hit groups ever signed by Apple Records, and a great power pop band. Their story is quite tragic because they were screwed over by their manager, but they made some truly great music in their time.

Seek and ye shall find. That is our motto here in The Mermaid Lounge, and this is the beginning of some great new stuff coming your way. Here we have Linda Ronstadt live from The Record Plant with some classic stuff from her early solo career. This was broadcast live on KSAN Radio.

7:00 p.m. The Allman Brothers Band Live at The Atlanta International Pop Festival, July 3-5, 1970

Simply one of the greatest bands in music history and certainly pioneers of that Southern rock sound. And could they play the blues? Damned straight they could. But it wasn’t just about the legendary guitarist Duane Allman. It was about Gregg Allman, the band’s songwriter and the man who kept them going after Duane’s tragic death.

10:00 p.m. The Shadow: 09 Murder On Approval NEW!

This is certainly appropos at this particular time in history. This is the one about a germ released near military installations, designed to kill soldiers so that the U.S. is left open to invasion. It’s up to The Shadow to save our sad, sorry asses.

It’s Sunday Funday From The College of Rock n’ Roll Knowledge: 1/17/2021

Happy Sunday, Musicologists! We are here in The Mermaid Lounge where we never sleep and the music never stops. It has been running 24/7 since February of 2017.

Joni Mitchell released the amazing album, Court & Spark, on this day in music history.

Here’s Sunday’s musical lesson:

January 17, 1963: The Beatles played their usual lunchtime gig at The Cavern Club, and then at the Majestic Ballroom in Birkenhead in the evening. The Majestic tickets all sold in advance. With literally hundreds of fans turned away, it was definitely time to look for a bigger venue.

January 17, 1964: The Rolling Stones released their first EP, which included You Better Move On, Poison Ivy, Bye Bye Johnny, and Money.

January 17, 1966: The Turtles released the song You Baby on this day. By the way, The Turtles were a great little band.

January 17, 1967: The Daily Mail ran a story about a local council survey finding 4,000 holes in the road in Lanashire, inspiring John Lennon’s contribution to the Beatles’ amazing A Day In The Life.

Also on this day, the Jimi Hendrix Experience recored a session for Radio Luxembourg’s Ready Steady Radio. The band ran up a $6.21 bar bill which they could not afford to pay. That would change soon.

January 17, 1970: The Doors performed the first of several concerts at the Felt Forum in New York City.

Also on this day, Led Zeppelin II would take over the #1 Album spot from Abbey Road after an 11-week run.

January 17, 1972: Neil Young released the great single Heart of Gold, with friends Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor singing background vocals.

Meanwhile, Paul Simon released his hit Mother and Child Reunion.

And a section of Highway 51 in South Memphis, Tennessee, was renamed Elvis Presley Boulevard. It was intended to be the entire road, but a church objected to their section being named after Elvis the Pelvis. No sense of humor.

January 17, 1974: Joni Mitchell’s amazing album, Court and Spark, was released on this day.

Bob Dylan also released Planet Waves on this day.

January 17, 1975: Bob Dylan released another great album on this day a year later called Blood On The Tracks.

Born On This Day

January 17, 1927: The amazing Eartha Kitt was born on this day in North, South Carolina.

January 17, 1949: Mick Taylor, guitarist for both John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers and the Rolling Stones, was born in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England.

January 17, 1955: Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Steve Earle was born in Fort Monroe, Virginia. Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Gretchen Peters, and Shawn Colvin have covered his tunes.

Today we have BeauSoleil live from Louisiana, one of the most well respected Cajun/Zydeco bands today.

BeauSoleil was founded in 1975, and released their first album in 1977. The band plays traditional and original music rooted in the folk music of the Cajuns and Creoles of Louisiana. Consider this a warm-up for our Mardi Gras event.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: We Ran by Linda Ronstadt FINAL AIRING!

This is the last chance for you to give a listen to this great album. Tomorrow, we’ll have a brand new album featured when you drag your butts out of bed.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Maria Muldaur

Maria Muldaur is a folk and blues singer who has been around since the folk revival of the sixties, playing with John Sebastian, the Even Dozen Jug Band, and the Jim Kweskin Jug Band as vocalist and sometimes violinist. Later, she’d lend her considerable talents to the Jerry Garcia Band. She’s in the spotlight here today.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at Three Rivers Stadium, Pittsburgh, June 30, 1995 NEW!

Again, more great music from the world’s premier jam band. Even on the same tour no two shows sound the same. What else can we possibly say about them except tune ’em in!

Yeah. I can say it until my eyes bleed. This is the station you should be listening to. But hey, if you’d rather pay for the stuff you used to get for free, go on. Some folks just don’t get it.

Gregg Allman Live at The House of Blues, Linda Ronstadt’s WE RAN, and We Celebrate Dave Grohl’s Birthday Later, January 14, 2021

Gregg Allman was a pioneer in Southern Rock, and every bit as important to the Allman Brothers as his brother, Duane.

I never understood people in the musical know who continue to debate which Allman was more important to The Allman Brothers. The simple answer is both of them. Duane was indeed one of those rare guitar gods. No question about it. But after his death, it was Gregg that held the band together. He was the songwriter, the arranger, and had an amazing voice. Today we have him live from The House of Blues in NOLA.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: We Ran by Linda Ronstadt

If you haven’t tuned this one in yet, I must tell you we are working on our second to last airing here on Thursday. This is Ronstadt’s most eclectic rock album, in my opinion, in spite of the fact that it come towards the twilight of her rock n’ roll career.

Today we are celebrating the birthday of Dave Grohl, singer and drummer for Nirvana, frontman for Foo Fighters, and near-drummer for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. (It worked out for all. Grohl got to start a great new band; the Heartbreakers got the amazing Steve Ferrone on drums.) Today we put Dave Grohl and The Foos in the spotlight.

January 12, 1957: Elvis Presley recorded All Shook Up, Got a Whole Lot of Lovin’ To Do, I Believe, and Tell Me Why at Radio Recorders in Hollywood, California.

January 12, 1959: Jackie Wilson continued at #1 on the R & B chart for a fifth week with Lonely Teardrops.

January 12, 1964: The Beatles appeared on the ATV show Sunday Night at The London Palladium, where they sang I Want To Hold Your Hand, This Boy, All My Loving, and Twist & Shout.

January 12, 1968: Manfred Mann released the single, The Mighty Quinn.

Also on this date, Pink Floyd debuted as a five-piece band at the University of Aston in Birmingham, England.

January 12, 1969: Led Zeppelin released their debut album in the U.S.

Also on this day, Wonderwall, the psychedelic movie with the George Harrison soundtrack, opened in theaters across the U.S.

January 12, 1970: Badfinger (a great power pop band) released the single, Come And Get It.

January 12, 1974: The late Jim Croce’s You Don’t Mess Around With Jim, finally hit #1 after 47 weeks on the charts.

Also on this day, The Steve Miller Band’s The Joker goes to #1 in the US, and everyone wants to know what the fuck the “pompatus of love” is to this day.

And if that isn’t enough, Aretha Franklin’s Until You Come Back To Me (That’s What I’m Gonna’ Do) knocked Stevie Wonder’s Livin’ For The City out of the #1 spot.

January 12, 1980: Damn The Torpedos, Tom Petty & The Heartbreaker’s breakout album, was at #6 on the Album chart on this day.

Also on this day in 1980, An American Dream by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band with Linda Ronstadt was making its run up the charts, from #59 to #33.

January 12, 1941: Long John Baldry, who recruited the likes of Elton John and Rod Steward for his band Bluesology, was born in East Haddon, Derbyshire, England.

January 12, 1944: Cynthia Robinson, singer and trumpet player for Sly & The Family Stone, was born in Sacramento, California.

January 12, 1955: NRBQ drummer Tommy Ardolino was born in Springfield, Massachusetts.
