Volume Two of The Sixties, Hank Williams and ‘Live’ Little Feat Are in the Plan for Wednesday, December 27, 2023

Yes, music lovers, we’re motoring toward our sixth year playing tunes her in The Mermaid Lounge, and we are going out in style.

Here’s your midweek musical lineup:

9:00 a.m.  The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two: Various Artists

The sixties are back for another round, this time covering the mid-to-late part of the decade with The Mamas & The Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Buffalo Springfield, Sly & The Family Stone, The Temptations, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Roy Orbison, The Yardbirds, The Animals, Linda Ronstadt, The Byrds, Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Blind Faith, The Spencer Davis Group, James Brown, Elvis Presley, The Box Tops, The Beatles, Marvin Gaye, B.B. King, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Wilson Pickett, Bob Dylan, The Band, Judy Collins, The Ronettes, The Kinks, Creedence Clearwater Revival and more!

4:00 p.m.  Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Hank Williams

The late, great Hank Williams is back for his second airing as our featured singer-songwriter.

8:00 p.m.  Little Feat Live at Ultrasonic Studios, Hempstead, New York, April 10, 1973

Nothing like a live performance by Little Feat. I saw them for the first time at Harvard Square Theater when they opened for Jerry Jeff Walker. Have loved them ever since, but there is nothing like the Lowell George version of the band. Some artists just cannot be replaced.

We’re at midweek and we’re cooking with gas. Get on board. The music’s free; no credit card required; no personal information requested. And we’re not tracking you because we’re not selling you anything. Our music is uninterrupted by commercial advertising.

Emmylou drops in for the second airing of her Album of The Week.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Susan Tedeschi

Boston born and raised Susan Tedeschi takes the spotlight tonight. Her strong voice and searing guitar work has drawn comparisons to Janis Joplin and Bonnie Raitt. But frankly, she’s all Susan Tedeschi.

Always a busy day here in The Lounge on Tuesday. But there’s plenty of room for all. Remember, five hours of uninterrupted blues begins promptly at 9:00 a.m. Just push the button below.

Today We’re Riding On ‘The Psychedelic Express’, Listening to Our AOW and Some Driving Songs, December 21, 2023

Good morning, musicologists! We’re closing in on Christmas 2023 here and making plans for our 2024 roll-out. We hope you’ll continue listening over the holidays!

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m.  The Psychedelic Express: Various Artists

Truly one of our favorite genres here in The Mermaid Lounge. It was a wondrous time in music that even those who came after continued to emulate, as you will see by songs from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, among others. In addition, you’ll hear The Beatles (who, as always, led the way here) Vanilla Fudge, The Chambers Brothers, Electric Prunes, The Animals, Jefferson Airplane, Blues Image, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, Pink Floyd, The Byrds, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Donovan, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Traffic, Cream, Dr. John, Procol Harum, Fleetwood Mac, The Who, Canned Heat, Yes, Electric Light Orchestra, Tommy James & The Shondells, Mudcrutch, Blind Faith, Grateful Dead, Velvet Underground, Big Brother & The Holding Company and more!

4:00 p.m.  Album of The Week: Two Sides To Every Woman by Carlene Carter

We’re winding down on this great selection, so get on it! Our final airing will be sometime on Saturday.

7:00 p.m.  Drivin’ Songs: Various Artists

Another multi-artist playlist (a short one, this time) featuring songs not only about driving, but also songs that give you lead-foot while driving. This time, you’ll hear Golden Earring, The Eagles, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Beatles, Little Feat, Rare Earth, Bruce Springsteen, The Allman Brothers Band, Bob Dylan, The Pretenders and more!

We know this is not a time when most people relax. Everyone’s out playing Capitalism. But when you get the chance to kick your shoes off and sit back, we’re the place to be.

It’s Simply Sunday Here and Maria Muldaur Owns Our AOW and ‘Travelin’ Fever’ is the EP, Then It’s Open Stream on December 3, 2023

Good morning, weekenders! We’ve got another simple Sunday on tap here in The Mermaid Lounge with light programming and plenty of wide Open Stream.

Here’s your musical lineup:

Maria Muldaur is undoubtedly one of the most underappreciated singers of her generation, hanging out with her peers Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt, among others. They knew who to tap for background and harmony vocals, and vice versa. On this release, she works with some of the best, including Bonnie Raitt, John Sebastian (founder of The Lovin’ Spoonful), Taj Mahal, and fellow blues singers Angela Strehli and Tracy Nelson.

3:00 p.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

We’re back on the road with some of our musical friends, including Canned Heat, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, the Steve Miller Band, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Dan Fogelberg, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Ronstadt, Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney & Wings, The Doors, The Eagles, Little Feat, The Band, Willie Nelson, Edwin Starr, Janis Joplin, Guy Clark, The Byrds, Joan Baez, Asleep at The Wheel, The Traveling Wilburys, Mudcrutch, Loggins & Messina, Buffalo Springfield, Tom Rush, The Guess Who, Ray Charles, the Marshall Tucker Band, The Beatles, Bob Dylan and more!

Friday Has Arrived and We’ve Open Up With Some Seedy People, Then Roy Orbison and New ‘Live’ Little Feat, November 3, 2023

Good morning, budding weekenders! We are almost there, kids, and today we’ve open up with our multi-artist ‘Villains, Scumbags and Lowlives’ Playlist, then it’s on to Roy Orbison and Little Feat.

Here’s your work week-ending lineup:

11:00 a.m. Villains, Scumbags and Lowlives: Various Artists

There are a lot of seedy people on the planet. Some of them are in full view in Washington right now. And they are a popular subject in music as well. You’ll hear The Beatles, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Shawn Colvin, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers,The Rolling Stones, Electric Light Orchestra, The Who, Warren Zevon, Supertramp, Linda Ronstadt, Foreigner, John Lee Hooker, Elton John, Dolly Parton, Neil Young and more!

4:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Roy Orbison FINAL AIRING!

We bid a fond farewell to Roy Orbison today, this week’s featured singer-songwriter. Tomorrow, we’ll have a brand new artist featured here.

We’ve got a new-to-the-station live performance by Little Feat during the Lowell George period (the best period, I might add) live from the Uptown Theatre.

Today It’s Laura Nyro With Our AOW and Some Folks Who Want to Sing to You About Travelin’ Fever, Sunday, October 1, 2023

Good morning, weekenders! We’re here on another keep-it-simple Sunday with Laura Nyro’s New York Tendaberry and our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP!

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

In her third studio album, Nyro sings about the romantic experience and past lovers in a darker tone than on Eli & The Thirteenth Confession (which has already been on our AOW roster), but New York Tendaberry would prove to be the most commercially successful album of her career. As we have said in previous write-ups about Laura Nyro, she spent most of her career making others successful with her great compositions, but there is nothing like hearing Laura singer her own stuff.

3:00 p.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

Life on the road has to be one of the most popular subjects in rock n’ roll (perhaps second only to the broken heart). You’ll hear from Canned Heat, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Steve Miller Band, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Dan Fogelberg, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Ronstadt, Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney & Wings, The Doors, The Eagles, Little Feat, The Band, Willie Nelson, Edwin Starr, Janis Joplin, Guy Clark, The Byrds, Joan Baez, Asleep at The Wheel, The Traveling Wilburys, Mudcrutch, Loggins & Messina, Buffalo Springfield, Tom Rush, Willie Nelson, The Guess Who, Ray Charles, Marshall Tucker Band, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Del Shannon, and more!

We’re at Midweek With the ‘Are You Ready for The Country’ EP, Garcia/Hunter, and Songs About Shoes, Wednesday, September 20, 2023

Good morning, music lovers! We’re at midweek and we’re loaded with good music today with two multi-artist playlists, one extended, one not. Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter are back as our singer-songwriters for the week.

Here’s your midweek musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Are You Ready For The Country: Various Artists

We don’t play bad pop bands with fiddles. We play real country along with the musicians who helped to establish the country-rock genre. You’ll hear Guy Clark, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young, The Byrds, Gram Parsons, Pure Prairie League, Asleep at The Wheel, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Bob Dylan, The Eagles, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, Marshall Tucker Band, Jerry Jeff Walker, Mudcrutch, The Band, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Glen Campbell, Rosanne Cash, Dan Fogelberg, New Riders of The Purple Sage, John Prine, The Desert Rose Band, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline and more!

4:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Jerry Garcia & Robert Hunter

The duo is back for their second spin as this week’s featured singer-songwriters.

8:00 p.m. Those Shoes: Various Artists

Shoes. Essential to our existence, unless we are lucky enough to live on a deserted island where we can walk barefoot without worry. You’ll hear Elvis Presley, Paul Simon, Steve Winwood, John Lee Hooker, The Everly Brothers, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Traffic, Gram Parsons, Betty Everett, Leon Russell, The Beatles, Elmore James, Little Feat, The Eagles and more!

We’re over the hump today and on the downslide to the weekend once again. No better way to get through this day and closer to the dream than with some great music. And that’s what we’ve got. See for yourself. And we won’t cost you a penny. Ever.

We’re Back to Simple Sunday Here With Our AOW by The Band and the ‘Under The Influence’ EP, September 17, 2023

Good morning, weekenders! We’re back to our keep-it-simple Sunday mode here with our Album of The Week and our ‘Under The Influence’ EP.

Here’s you musical landscape:

A Mermaid Lounge favorite is back today. We’re of the opinion that The Band never made a bad album. This one is no exception, although it didn’t get the attention it deserved after their incredible run of Music From Big Pink, The Band (the amazing brown album) and Stage Fright. It’s our Album of The Week starting today.

3:00 p.m. Under The Influence: Various Artists

Likewise, we believe there’s nothing like being under the influence on the weekend. You’ll hear from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Arlo Guthrie, The Byrds, Bob Dylan, Jefferson Airplane, Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen, Donovan, Glen Frey, John Lee Hooker, Jonathan Edwards, Linda Ronstadt, Little Feat, The Traveling Wilburys, The Temptations, Small Faces, Steely Dan, The Beatles, Talking Heads, Neil Young, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Velvet Underground, the Rolling Stones, Dave Van Ronk, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Jackson Browne, Steve Winwood, Led Zeppelin, Harry Chapin, The Band, The Fraternity of Man and more!

We Visit Hitsville, U.S.A., Robbie Robertson is Back and We Have Some ‘Live’ Little Feat, on Wednesday, September 6, 2023

Good morning, musicologists, and welcome to our midweek mayhem here as we start out with ‘M is For Motown,’ move on to Robbie Robertson and close with Little Feat.

Here’s your midweek lineup:

9:00 a.m. M is for Motown: Various Artists

It’s back with Barrett Strong, Eddie Kendricks, Eddie Holland, Edwin Starr, Gladys Knight & The Pips, the Jackson Five, Kim Weston, Jr. Walker & The All Stars, Marvin Gaye, Martha & The Vandellas, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Four Tops, The Isley Brothers, The Temptations, The Contours, Rare Earth, Mary Wells, Tammi Terrell, Diana Ross & The Supremes and more!

4:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Robbie Robertson

The late, great Robbie Robertson is back for his second turn as our featured singer-songwriter. Robertson was the lead guitarist for The Hawks and Bob Dylan, before taking the helm of The Band and helping them become one of the most influential in the development of Americana music.

8:00 p.m. Little Feat Live at Lisner Auditorium, Washington, D.C., August 18, 1977

On this particular outing, Little Feat brings the Tower of Power horns along. Little Feat is one of the most funky, fun bands ever, particularly their years with Lowell George. Don’t miss it.

We’ve made it to midweek. We don’t have far to go until it’s the weekend again and we’ll be able to relax and kick back. In the meantime, we’re running 24/7 to make life more tolerable.

Let’s Keep It Simple: We’ve Got ‘Pet Sounds’ as Our AOW and We Hit The Road With Our ‘Travelin’ Fever’ EP, Sunday, August 27, 2023

Good morning, serious weekenders! This is our keep-it-simple day today and the living couldn’t be any easier here in The Mermaid Lounge. Read on for details!

Here is your musical road ahead:

This is The Beach Boys eleventh studio release, although it was pretty much a Brian Wilson tour-de-force solo project of major proportions. He composed the majority of this by himself, spurred on by a mystical revelation (there was a lot of that going around those days) and by the work of The Beatles. It is certainly considered one of the greatest and most influential albums in popular music history.

3:00 p.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

We’re back on the move again with our road warriors, including Canned Heat, Tom Petty & The Hearbreakers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Steve Miller Band, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Dan Fogelberg, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Ronstadt, Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney & Wings, The Doors, The Eagles, Little Feat, The Band, Willie Nelson, Edwin Starr, Guy Clark, The Byrds, Joan Baez, Asleep at The Wheel, The Traveling Wilburys, Mudcrutch, Loggins & Messina, Buffalo Springfield, Tom Rush, The Guess Who, The Beatles, Ray Charles, The Marshall Tucker Band, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Del Shannon and more!
