Without a doubt, a Mermaid Lounge favorite, but with Lowell George at the helm. Do I think they were good post-George? Yes. But the notion that there’s a Little Feat without Lowell George is the same for me as the Grateful Dead without Jerry Garcia or The Heartbreakers without Tom Petty.

This popular Long Island music venue was a decades-long influence on the music world with many artists passing through its doors. Linda Ronstadt was one of them on her journey to becoming the Queen of Rock in the seventies. We have her 1974 show from that venue today.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Gris-Gris by Dr. John

This album has been described as New Orleans R & B meets Psychedelic Voodoo, and we here in The Mermaid Lounge think that’s a pretty accurate description. Hear it for yourself today!

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Paradise, Boston, MA, July 16, 1978

This was the very first time I was introduced to Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers ‘live’ anywhere. I spent a lot of my formative years at The Paradise, but this one show stands out quite clearly all these years later. Today we give you the show as it was recorded for airing on Boston’s famous WBCN 104.1 FM radio station (another staple of my youth). This show was in support of the band’s album, You’re Gonna’ Get It.

Come on, folks. It doesn’t get any better than this: Ronstadt and Petty on the same day? Great day to step out of that musical shell and tune us in. We’re totally free. We continue on with Tom Petty month by giving you the complete Mudcrutch catalogue this morning. They didn’t make it big as Mudcrutch, but they did morph into Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Later on, Petty would reunite the band and make it count. But just because Mudcrutch wasn’t the main act, it doesn’t mean the music wasn’t fantastic. It was.

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Maria Muldaur

Maria Muldaur came out of the Greenwich Village folk music scene and created a career that combined folk, blues and just a little bit of jazz tossed in every once in a while. She was one of the great ensemble singers of the seventies (along with Nicolette Larson, Valerie Carter, Wendy Waldman, and others) that everyone wanted on their records. Like the others, she also had a hefty solo career.

Van the Man recorded live in Belfast over a two-night engagement. Not always the most personable man to spend money on, but an amazing singer-songwriter and talent nonetheless.

Another soundboard recording from the worlds most popular jam band in a totally historical venue. A rare repeat here, but it has been a while. It’ll be like new.

We go for round two airing of this week’s featured album by The Zombies as we toss in a bit of psychedelia for the afternoon. As we said in our blog post on Sunday, it took nearly half a century for this album to be fully appreciated. (But not by me.)

Tom Petty said he once envisioned his main band growing old together and sitting around in chairs playing the blues together. He never quite got there, unfortunately for all of us. However, he and the boys did sing some great blues together during their 40-year run, and we’ve got those songs here for you this evening as we continue on with Tom Petty month.

We kick off Tom Petty month modestly today with the greatest supergroup of all time In the Spotlight today. Tom was only part of this band, but he was an important cog in the wheel of friendship that made this band work.

3:00 p.m. Neil Young & Crazy Horse Live at The Cow Palace, San Francisco, CA, October 22, 1978

We’ve got Neil Young and one of his most consistent back-up bands live for you at mid-afternoon. We haven’t aired this one for a while, so tune it in.

7:00 p.m. Jimi Hendrix Live at The Berkeley Community Theatre, Berkeley, CA, May 30, 1970 NEW!

Hendrix performed this one just a few months before his untimely death. It’s also brand new to the station; we’ve never heard it before ourselves.

Before, in between, and after we’ve got that great wide Open Stream, and a little later today, we’ll be adding music to that stream to make it even better. The Music Mermaid demands it. We Start a New Month With the ‘Color My World’ EP, the Final Airing of “Cloud Nine,” and LIVE DEAD! Later, Saturday, October 1, 2022

Welcome to a brand new month as we move into the fall-winter spectrum. We’re happy to be here with the leaves changing and little bite in the air. We’ll counter all that with some hot music. We’ve got some new additions to our routine coming, and maybe a couple of changes on deck as well. Stay tuned.

We close out today’s Tuesday Bluesday programming with a guy who left us much too soon. Stevie Ray Vaughan was, without a doubt, one of the greatest masters of blues guitar and one dominant presence on stage. See for yourself tonight.

Tuesday Bluesday generally brings out a lot of listeners, but we’re not concerned with numbers here because this is a labor of musical love. We do not charge for you to listen…no ‘subscription’ required here. That means you never have to divulge your personal information or give us a credit card number. Our second ‘live’ performance today is from Warren Zevon, a self-destructive soul for sure, but one of the finest singer-songwriters of any generation.

Another repeat, but it was last aired in early 2020, so it’s like new. As is every performance by the world’s preeminent jam band. We’re working on new material going forward, but this is a great soundboard recording.
