This would have been earlier than Damn The Torpedoes, the album that put them on the map. That momentous event would not come for another year. This is vintage, early Heartbreakers, and I was there.

This great album was a collaborative effort between what many consider to be two unlikely vocalists in Alison Krauss (Union Station) and Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin). Produced by the legendary T Bone Burnett, he hand-picked all the songs. Released in October 2007, Raising Sand won Album of The Year at the 2008 Americana Music Awards, and at the 2009 Grammy Awards. I have to tell you that I personally have a love-hate relationship with Led Zeppelin most of the time (I like some of their stuff; but not all) and have been ambivalent about Robert Plant overall. But this album? It’s a major winner.

It’s Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge With Our New AOW and The Women of Music Fully in Charge, December 19, 2021

Welcome to another Sunday in the Lounge. Today we have a vintage Album of The Week for you, and we have turned the musical reins over to the women of music. I don’t know a radio station that actually does any of that. We made a commitment to giving female artists a bigger voice. Take advantage of it.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Big Brother & The Holding Company by Big Brother & The Holding Company

This was the band’s debut album, released on August 23, 1967, with Janis Joplin as their main singer. It was recorded over a three-day stretch in December of 1966. After the band’s blowout success at the Monterey Pop festival in 1967, Columbia Records took over their contract and re-released the album with two additional songs and with Janis Joplin’s name on the front cover. Album reviews are mixed on this one, and we really don’t pay much attention to that stuff anyway. Regardless of the status of the album, it was the birth of Janis Joplin’s all too short, but oh so sweet, career.

The ladies return to take you through the afternoon and evening, making it clear that they are not second class citizens on this station. It’s rare that we choose a Greatest Hits album as our Album of The Week, but there are those moments in music when it must be done. For those who are only familiar with the current iteration of Fleetwood Mac, this is not how they began their career. During the sixties, when the band came to be, it was a British blues-rock band led by a great guitarist named Peter Green. His version of Fleetwood Mac remains our favorite here in the lounge. Another one from the vault from the world’s ultimate road jam band. This one’s from the Cape Cod Coliseum, a venue which many claims feels like it’s “in the middle of nowhere.” Funny, I don’t remember that. Then again, I don’t remember a lot about my trips to the Cape Cod Coliseum, to be honest.

Great day to tune us in, as always. I know I say that every day, but I also mean it every day. Hey, look, where else do you get to try something out for free. In my experience, new “experiences” always seem to require a credit card with the caveat that you can cancel at any time. Well, that’s not the way we do business around here. The album title translates to Back in The U.S.S.R. and is the seventh studio album by Paul McCartney. It was released in October 1988 exclusively in Russia. It was released worldwide in 1991. The album is live in-studio covers of some of the great rock n’ roll hits that inspired so many artists of the sixties, including The Beatles, The Stones, and many others. This is a great album, proving that McCartney can rock with the best of them. The man’s career has spanned six decades now, and he’s still going. He’s what we call a living legend.

The ladies take over for five uninterrupted hours of bliss at mid-afternoon. She’s also loaned her pipes to the likes of Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt, and is one of our favorites here in The Mermaid Lounge.

We love Fats Domino here in The Mermaid Lounge. There’s a lot of discussion about where rock n’ roll started, what was the first rock n’ roll song, and the question has been asked “Was anyone singing rock n’ roll before Fats Domino?” Not sure anyone actually was, but we certainly consider our friend from New Orleans a pioneer of the genre.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Heart of Mine by Maria Muldaur FINAL AIRING!

Today we have the final airing of our Album of The Week as sultry crooner Maria Muldaur interprets the romantic side of Bob Dylan. Don’t forget to tune it in. Tomorrow when you wake up, we’ll have a new choice.

A few weeks ago, we featured Emmylou Harris’s brilliant album, Wrecking Ball, as our Album of The Week. Her tour with Spyboy took Wrecking Ball on the road, although she did feature several songs from other albums, most notably, her ode to Gram Parsons, the beautiful Boulder to Birmingham. The stripped-down approach to her music continued her love of working with a variety of different musicians. The band consisted of country singer-songwriter Buddy Miller on guitar, and two New Orleans musicians, Daryl Johnson on bass and Brady Blade on drums.

10:00 p.m. Live Dead! The Grateful Dead Live at The Uptown Theatre, Chicago, Illinois, December 3, 1979 NEW!

One more from the road from the greatest jam band in popular music history. Not sure I’ve ever said this, but please keep in mind that Live Dead shows are sourced from a variety of providers, including fan-recorded events so there may be some flaws and quality variations as we progress through the catalogue.
