Known as the Prince of Soul, Marvin Gaye was instrumental in shaping the Motown sound of the sixties. It’s only fitting that we close out the programming with a collection of his number one hits.

We open not with our EP, but with a Stevie Wonder Spotlight feature. He is one of the foundational artists of Motown, scoring his first smash hit at the age of thirteen with Fingertips Pt. 2. He also went on the Ed Sullivan show playing harmonica and singing the song, with another future sensation, Marvin Gaye, playing drums.

But they have made many albums and many live appearances over their half a century in music and, while we do have some of their stuff floating around our stream, I have a vast collection about to make it’s mark on our airwaves. Stay tuned. This is just the beginning.

A Mermaid Lounge favorite here live from London’s Rainbow Room. I have seen these guys several times over the years (the Lowell George version only), and they never disappointed. In fact, their performance at the Harvard Square Theater back in the seventies was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Full Moon Fever by Tom Petty NEW!

Full Moon Fever was Tom Petty’s very first solo effort, released April 24, 1989 on MCA. It was produced by Petty, Mike Campbell, and Jeff Lynne. In addition to Lynne, other members of the Wilburys also contributed, including George Harrison and Roy Orbison. It was recorded in Campbell’s garage studio, and was actually interrupted mid-stream for the recording of the Traveling Wilbury’s first album.

Full Moon Fever was both a critical and commercial success. Five singles were released: I Won’t Back Down, Runnin’ Down A Dream, Free Fallin’, A Face In The Crowd, and Yer So Bad. It peaked at No. 3 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and No. 8 in the UK. It was certified 5x platinum in the U.S. on October 5, 2000 and 6x platinum in Canada on September 18, 1991 in Canada. In 2019, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
