Saturday Delivers A Great New Playlist, NOT The Album of The Week, The Actual Album of The Week, and LIVE DEAD, September 4, 2021

Here we are with our usual frenetic Saturday in The Mermaid Lounge, and we wish you a great Good Morning. We’ve got some really cool stuff on tap, including a brand new playlist called Repeat After Me.

Today we’ve got a great new playlist of remakes and reboots along with the originals!

Here’s your Saturday line-up!

11:00 a.m. Repeat After Me: Various Artists NEW!

I was driving home from work when this idea came into my head and I wondered what the hell took me so long. I also have to tell you that I somehow feel this is simply the first volume. I thought of even more this morning. Here we have some great songs that have also been the beneficiaries of great remakes. They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and that is certainly the case in the music world. The best want to remake and pay tribute to the best songwriters and performers who have inspired their own music.

The playlist for this volume will be in the blog under the “Playlist” tab. Just click on it and scroll to the bottom.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Countdown to Ecstasy by Steely Dan FINAL AIRING!

This is the final airing of this great album. Get on it while you can. Tomorrow, we’ve got a brand new album to feature, and it’s one that just got its 50th Anniversary edition to boot!

7:00 p.m. NOT The Album of The Week: Surf N’ Burn by The Blue Stingrays

Last summer we added surf music to our repertoire, but we’ve not given it much of an audience this summer, regrettably I might add. As we work on the Labor Day Weekend, we’re going to play Surf N’ Burn by The Blue Stingrays. There’s a story behind this one. This band made one album, although the liner notes called them the premier surf music band of the sixties (when surf music first burst onto the music scene). The band is actually Mike Campbell and Ron Blair (of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers), and Randall Marsh (drummer for Mudcrutch, another Tom Petty band). The did this anonymously because they didn’t want to detract from The Heartbreakers meteoric rise of 1997, the year the album was released. They didn’t particularly care if it even sold a copy (which it did; I have one). They did it because they love the sound of surf music.

The album was just picked up and re-released a few weeks ago. If you are a lover of guitars (and of Mike Campbell, simply one of the best guitarists on the planet), then there’s something about surf guitar music that can’t be explained. Tune it in and see for yourself.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Universal Amphitheatre, Los Angeles, California, July 1, 1973

This is one of the few repeat performances we’ve played since starting LIVE DEAD three years ago, but it also hasn’t been aired since 2019. It’ll be like new, just like every live performance The Dead has done. We have several brand new never-before-played concerts in the bucket. We just need to get them ready.

Saturday in The Mermaid Lounge is pretty busy, and this one is no different. Give us a shot. We’ve got listeners from all over this morning, including Italy, Israel, Denmark, Sweden, the UK, France, Germany, The Russian Federation, Romania, Spain and even The Republic of Korea. We’re sitting here waiting on the U.S. (although we do have someone from North Carolina and someone from Texas this morning). Tune us in. Get with the damned program.

It’s Another Monday in Paradise With the Rascals, Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers” Project, and Some Pretty Sweet Soul, March 8, 2021

Good Morning, Radio Sweethearts! It’s another Monday but, hey, the sun is out and that’s a plus. We’ve got some great music programming for today sprinkled in with that wild and crazy Open Stream.

We happily revisit Tom Petty’s massive “Wildflowers” project today.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The (Young) Rascals

Are they The Rascals? Yes. Are they The Young Rascals? Yes. We’re quibbling here. The Rascals were one of the finest bands on the planet back in the day. Today, we put them In the Spotlight. For your listening pleasure, of course.

3:00 p.m. Tom Petty’s Wildflowers Project: All The Rest

It has been a while since the release of the Wildflowers Project, and we’re going to start revisiting it intermittently today. We begin with All The Rest, or the songs that didn’t make the album. Of course, some of these songs appeared somewhere later down the road. However, some were not heard until this project was released, like Leave Virginia Alone and Confusion Wheel. We have those here today.

7:00 p.m. Sweet Soul Music 1965: Various Artists

Some early soul here with the likes of Solomon Burke, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Fontella Bass, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Joe Tex, Lee Dorsey, Roy Head, Don Covay, Booker T & The MGs (the original Stax Records house band), Kim Weston, and more!

Please, spare me from having to tell you we’re totally free and operate outside the system yet again. I’m getting tired of saying this. I simply think Americans don’t bother to stop and smell the roses unless, of course, they are paying for it through the nose. The beauty of capitalism is that people buy into it.

It’s a Light Programming Day With Roy Orbison’s “Mystery Girl” as Our Album of The Week, and Otis Redding In the Spotlight Later, Sunday, January 31, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We are defnitely running behind lately but being sick hasn’t helped. Hopefully, I’ll get myself back on track in the next couple of days.

Otis Redding didn’t live long enough to enjoy his time in the spotlight.

Here’s today’s line-up:

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Mystery Girl by Roy Orbison NEW!

Mystery Girl was Roy Orbison’s twenty-second album, completed in November 1988, a month before his death at the age of 52. It was released posthumously in January of 1989. Orbison had help from a cadre of admirers, including Tom Petty and his bandmate Mike Campbell, Jeff Lynne, Elvis Costello, George Harrison, T Bone Burnett, and Jim Keltner. Today we are giving you the deluxe 25th anniversary edition.

6:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Otis Redding

Otis Redding had his break out performance at the Monterey Pop Festival during the Summer of Love. On December 10th, less than six months later, he perished in a plane crash at the age of 27. We hope you’ll join our family of music lovers soon. We’re free 24/7. No chatty DJ’s. No advertising. No credit card required. Nothing to join, and no personal information requested. What the hell are you waiting for?

Good Morning From The College of Rock n’ Roll Knowledge: 1/8/2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Here we are again bringing you news from the annals of rock n’ roll. Today, a very important person in the music world was born.

Elvis Presley in Tupelo, Mississippi Sept 26, 1956 © 1978 Roger Marshutz—MPTV

Here’s today’s lesson:

January 8, 1957: Bill Haley & The Comets, LaVern Baker, and Big Joe Turner start an Australian tour in Newastle Stadium, Newcastle. This is the world’s first rock n’ roll concert.

January 8, 1960: Eddie Cochran records Three Steps To Heaven in Hollywood. It will be his final recording session.

January 8, 1966: The Beatles had only been charting for a couple of years, yet they had their 11th number one hit with We Can Work It Out.

Also on this day, the album Rubber Soul soared from #60 to #1 to take over the Album chart. It was The Beatles’ seventh #1 US album.

The Who and The Kinks were the final guests on the last episode of the TV show Shindig.

A great new folk group called The Mamas & The Papas were gaining a lot of attention. On this day, they charted their first hit single, California Dreamin’.

January 8, 1968: (Sittin’ On) The Dock of The Bay, by Otis Redding, was released by Stax Records. It would be his only hit. He passed away the year before in a plane crash before he ever had the opportunity to see its release.

January 8, 1975: Three Led Zeppelin shows scheduled for Madison Square Garden sell out in a matter of four hours.

Born On This Day

January 8, 1931: Bill Graham, concert promoter whose name is synonymous with The Fillmore, was born Wolfgang Grajunca in Berlin, Germany.

January 8, 1935: Elvis Aaron Presley, also known as The King, was born in Tupelo, Mississippi. He had his first hit in 1956 with the great song Heartbreak Hotel.

January 8, 1940: Jerome “Little Anthony” Gourdine of Little Anthony & The Imperials was born in Brooklyn, New York.

January 8, 1946: Robby Krieger, songwriter and elite guitarist with The Doors, was born in Los Angeles.

January 8, 1947: Terry Sylvester, who replaced Graham Nash in The Hollies, was born in Liverpool, England.

And that is it on this day in music history. We will be back with the line-up soon.

Our Antidote To Christmas Music: Bob Dylan with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Band and MOONDOG MATINEE, and Later It’s That Sweet Soul Sound, Thursday, December 24, 2020

Good Morning, Musicologists! Here we are on holiday, and we’ve got the perfect antidote to that bad Christmas music that I know is playing in ACE Hardware today. Luckily, I’m here in The Mermaid Lounge.

Dylan and Petty. Does it get any better? Not from where I’m sitting.

Here’s your Christmas Eve day programming!

11:00 a.m. Bob Dylan with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live in Sacramento, June 12, 1986

One day, Bob Dylan asked Tom Petty to go on tour with him. There’s a reason why all these guys wanted The Heartbreakers around. You’re about to find out just exactly why. In return, all of the members of The Heartbreakers credit Dylan with teaching them the importance of adjusting plans, songs, and being more spontaneous on stage. It was a marriage made in music heaven.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Moondog Matinee by The Band

I could go on and on about The Band, undoubtedly one of the great treasures in American popular music. They may have started as Dylan’s back-up band, but they carved their own very real place in music history.

7:00 p.m. That Sweet Soul Sound: Various Artists EXPANDED AND UPDATED!

This is a great playlist to close out today’s programming. We’ve added some new music, so we’ve added some new songs to the playlist. We hope you’ll enjoy hearing Otis Redding, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Mary Wells, James Brown, Rare Earth, The Box Tops, The Marvelettes, Jackie Wilson, The Temptations, Ann Peebles, Bill Withers and many more!

It’s Christmas. Time to pack it in. Be done with the pursuit of capitalism, and tune in to a radio station with no ulterior money-making motives. We don’t ask you to subscribe. We don’t ask for your credit card. We don’t ask for personal information because we don’t intend to sell you anything. We’re here for the music, believe it or not. If you choose not to believe, then all I can say is that you have no idea what you are missing.

It’s a Day of Rest, But Not Here in The College of Rock n’ Roll Knowledge: 12/20/2020

Good Morning, Students! It’s Sunday here in the College of Rock n’ Roll Knowledge, and we’ve got a great day lined up. But first, your lesson.

Jethro Tull was formed on this day in 1967.

Here’s all the news that’s fit to print:

December 20, 1956: Elvis Presley was making musical chart history with ten songs on Billboard’s Top 100.

December 20, 1958: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison appear as The Quarrymen at the wedding reception of George’s older brother, Harry.

December 20, 1965: Wicked Wilson Pickett records the fucking great song, 634-5789, with Booker T & The MG’s. Booker was missing on that day, but his keyboards were handled nicely for him by none other than Isaac Hayes.

Also on this day in 1965, The Beach Boys released the single Barbara Ann.

December 20, 1966: The Big O, Otis Redding, played the Fillmore West in San Francisco.

December 20, 1967: Vocalist and master flute player Ian Anderson and bassist Glenn Cornick leave The John Evans Blues Band to form Jethro Tull, naming the band after an inventor of farm implements. John Evans would later join Tull himself as the keyboardist.

December 20, 1969: The Beatles’ masterpiece, Abbey Road, remained at the top of the charts for an eighth week on this day.

December 20, 1971: The album from George Harrison’s Concert For Bangladesh (the very first musical event of its kind in history) was released. It would win the Grammy Award for Best Album.

December 20, 1972: The O’Jays recorded the great song Love Train.

December 20, 1975: Joe Walsh officially replaced Bernie Leadon in The Eagles, moving them into a harder rock frame. He had previously been with The James Gang, a great band, by the way. However, on this day, my love affair with The Eagles ended, as much as I love Joe Walsh. I continued to listen, and their catalogue is in our rotation, but I prefer their earlier feel.

December 20, 1980: Twelve days after being shot dead by a fucking psychopath who just wanted his time in the spotlight, John Lennon had his first #1 solo hit with Just Like Starting Over.

Born On This Day

December 20, 1939: R & B singer Kim Weston was born in Detroit, Michigan.

December 20, 1944: Bobby Columby, drummer for Blood, Sweat & Tears, was born in New York.

December 20, 1947: Little Stevie Wright, lead singer of The Easybeats (Friday On My Mind) was born in Leeds, England. He would, however, be raised in Australia. During their six-year career, The Easybeats had 15 Top 10 hits in Australia, no slight feat regardless of where you were raised. The Easybeats are in our daily standard rotation.

December 20, 1948: Alan Parsons of The Alan Parson’s Project (Games People Play, I Wouldn’t Want To Be Like You), was born in London. He began his musical career as an engineer at Abbey Road Studios, working on Abbey Road and Let It Be for The Beatles, Dark Side of The Moon for Pink Floyd, and Wild Life by Paul McCartney & Wings (their actual first album as a band). The Alan Parsons Project is in our daily standard rotation.

And that is it from The College for this morning. Our line-up will be posted soon!
