This was the final live show for Rod Stewart and his mates, and tonight we bring it to you to close out our all-British day.

We Keep It Simple On Sunday With The Byrds’ “Mr. Tambourine Man” as Our AOW and ‘The British Are Coming’ EP in the Afternoon, January 29, 2023

Good morning, Weekenders! You know we keep it pretty simple on Sundays here in The Mermaid Lounge with plenty of wide Open Stream and just a couple of (great) programming items.

Here’s your simple Sunday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Mr. Tambourine Man by The Byrds NEW!

This is the debut album by this great band, released on June 21, 1965, and marked the debut of the signature guitar sound of Jim McGuinn’s 12-string Rickenbacker guitar and the band’s amazing harmonizing, a vocal approach of the late, great David Crosby who would carry that tradition on into Crosby, Stills & Nash later in his career. This album consists mainly of folk covers, many written by Bob Dylan including the title tune and originals co-written by Gene Clark. The album provided the first American challenge to the chart dominance of The Beatles and other British invasion bands. The Byrds would go on to influence others in the sixties as well as future generations of musicians, including Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers who carried on the jangling sound of McGuinn’s 12-string Rickenbacker throughout their 40-year career. I personally have a love-hate relationship with EJ, preferring his earlier works to the stuff he made later in his career. When you begin a long-term run in Vegas, you know it’s time to hang them up. I continue to believe this is one of Elton John’s finest albums, if not his absolute best. I have liked various songs here and there since the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album, but nothing has knocked my socks off since then. Regardless, this album belongs on our Album of The Week radar without a doubt.

Serendipity has once again found its way into my off-the-cuff programming and given us an All-British Sunday. That can only mean good things. November 17, 1938: Canadian singer Gordon Lightfoot is born in Orilla, Ontario.

November 17, 1944: Gene Clark, singer-songwriter for The New Christy Minstrels and The Byrds, is born in Tipton, Missouri.

November 17, 1966: The Beach Boys had the #1 spot on the UK singles charts with Good Vibrations.

November 17, 1967: A 16-date UK package tour featuring Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, The Move (Jeff Lynne’s first band before ELO and The Traveling Wilburys), The Nice, and Amen Corner played at the City Hall, Sheffield, UK.

November 17, 1971: Rod Stewart & Faces release A Nod Is As Good As A Wink…To a Blind Horse. This is their third LP together.

November 17, 1980: John Lennon releases Double Fantasy. Three weeks later he is shot and killed outside The Dakota.

November 14, 1960: It’s Now or Never by Elvis Presley becomes the fastest-selling single ever in the UK, selling 780,000 copies a week.

Also on this day, Ray Charles goes to #1 for the first time ever with Georgia On My Mind, his ninth hit.

November 14, 1962: The Beatles played the final show of a 14-night run at the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany. We will soon be featuring these performances here at $BecomeUngovernable Radio.

November 14, 1964: The Supremes reign at the top of the charts for the third week with their first hit, Baby Love.

November 14, 1967: Pink Floyd opens for The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and play the first show at Royal Albert Hall in London.

November 14, 1970: Gladys Knight & The Pips release If I Were Your Woman.

Also on this day, Santana releases their version of Black Magic Woman. Most people do not know that the song was originally written by Peter Green, and released by Fleetwood Mac in 1968, when they were a blues band.
