Saturday Brings Elvis’ AOW, Our ‘Under The Influence’ EP and Walter Becker-Donald Fagan as Our Singer-Songwriters, November 18, 2023

Good morning, weekenders! Yes, it’s finally Saturday and The Music Mermaid has her selections all queued up for this fine day. Read on for the details!

Here are your musical details:

9:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Elvis Presley by Elvis Presley FINAL AIRING!

We bid farewell to Elvis’ debut album today, a fine piece of music from what I personally consider his best time, right around 1956 and the Nashville/Sun sessions. Tomorrow, we’ll have a new album.

12:00 p.m. Under the Influence: Various Artists

Ah, yes. In my youth, some of my best times were spent under the influence. Today, you’ll hear Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Arlo Guthrie, Jackson Browne, Bob Dylan, Jefferson Airplane, Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen, Donovan, Glen Frey, John Lee Hooker, Jonathan Edwards, Linda Ronstadt, Little Feat, The Traveling Wilburys, The Temptations, Small Faces, Steely Dan, The Beatles, Talking Heads, Neil Young, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Velvet Underground, The Rolling Stones, Dave Van Ronk, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Jackson Browne, Steve Winwood, Led Zeppelin, Harry Chapin, The Band, The Fraternity of Man and more!

There’s a thing out there on social media asking the best bands of the seventies. Had it not been for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Steely Dan would have been my number one. They’re a very close number two. We love them here in The Mermaid Lounge, and they are that good because of the singer-songwriter duo that put them on the map.

‘The British Are Coming’ EP, Laura Nyro’s AOW, and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live in Germany on Thursday, October 5, 2023

We’re already at Thursday, and we’ve got some great music from across the pond, Laura Nyro and New York Tendaberry and The Heartrbreakers live in Germany as we continue Tom Petty Month.

Here’s today’s musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. The British are Coming: Various Artists

Our friends from across the pond are back with music starting, but not ending, with the British Invastion. You’ll hear The Beatles, The Who, Dave Mason, Electric Light Orchestra, Petula Clark, The Zombies, The Hollies, Dusty Springfield, Small Faces, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Kinks, Dave Clark Five, The Bee Gees, Moody Blues, Rod Stewart, George Harrison, Them, Herman’s Hermits, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Badfinger, The Yardbirds, Traffic, Elton John, Lulu, Pink Floyd, Yes, The Animals, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, Spencer Davis Group and more!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: New York Tendaberry by Laura Nyro

Laura Nyro’s back again for another turn with her great New York Tendaberry album. We’re winding down on this one with the final airing coming on Saturday.

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Docks, Hamburg, Germany, April 23, 1999

Recorded for Rockpalast, this is a fine live performance by the gang. The Heartbreakers were always a great ‘road’ band. Next time we fulfill the duties of Tom Petty Month, you’ll see that they are the planet’s best cover band as well.

Let’s get on it. It’s Tom Petty Month! Granted we have toned it down from the first two years, but we’ve got some great stuff planned and it’s still early in the month! We’re on 24/7 and we’re totally free of charge to all. No advertising either. See for yourself.

We’re Back to Simple Sunday Here With Our AOW by The Band and the ‘Under The Influence’ EP, September 17, 2023

Good morning, weekenders! We’re back to our keep-it-simple Sunday mode here with our Album of The Week and our ‘Under The Influence’ EP.

Here’s you musical landscape:

A Mermaid Lounge favorite is back today. We’re of the opinion that The Band never made a bad album. This one is no exception, although it didn’t get the attention it deserved after their incredible run of Music From Big Pink, The Band (the amazing brown album) and Stage Fright. It’s our Album of The Week starting today.

3:00 p.m. Under The Influence: Various Artists

Likewise, we believe there’s nothing like being under the influence on the weekend. You’ll hear from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Arlo Guthrie, The Byrds, Bob Dylan, Jefferson Airplane, Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen, Donovan, Glen Frey, John Lee Hooker, Jonathan Edwards, Linda Ronstadt, Little Feat, The Traveling Wilburys, The Temptations, Small Faces, Steely Dan, The Beatles, Talking Heads, Neil Young, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Velvet Underground, the Rolling Stones, Dave Van Ronk, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Jackson Browne, Steve Winwood, Led Zeppelin, Harry Chapin, The Band, The Fraternity of Man and more!

We Head To the Weekend With ‘The British Are Coming’ EP, Our AOW, and Some ‘Live’ Kinks Later, Thursday, June 29, 2023

Good morning, all! With the exception of Dylan’s AOW, it’s kind of a British Invasion today with five hours of music from across the pond and some ‘live’ music from the battling Davies brothers later!

Here’s your musical landscape:

9:00 a.m. The British Are Coming: Various Artists

The British Invasion and beyond is the order of the day, and you’ll hear from The Beatles (of course), The Who, Dave Mason, Electric Light Orchestra, Petula Clark, The Zombies, The Hollies, Dusty Springfield, Small Faces, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Kinks, the Dave Clark Five, The Bee Gees, The Moody Blues, Rod Stewart, George Harrison, Them, Herman’s Hermits, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Badfinger, The Yardbirds, Traffic, Elton John, Lulu, Pink Floyd, Yes, The Animals, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, the Spencer Davis Group, Cream, Donovan, The Rolling Stones and more!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Nashville Skyline by Bob Dylan

Released in 1969, this was Dylan’s total immersion in country music and it includes a duet with the great Johnny Cash with The Girl From The North Country. We’re winding down on this one. The final airing is sometime Saturday.

7:00 p.m. The Kinks Live at The Palladium, New York, December 31, 1980

What better way to close the day than with some music from the battling Davies brothers. Fist fights in the dressing room were not unheard of back in the day, but they made a hell of a lot of great music together.

We’re here 24/7 and we’re totally free of charge, folks. We are all about the music, and there’s no hidden fees or bullshit. Give it a try. All you need is a free tab and he button below.

It’s a Simple Sunday With Emmylou Harris and Our AOW, Along With the ‘Under The Influence’ EP, May 14,2023

Good morning, musicologists, and Happy Mothers’ Day to all you mothers (literally and figuratively speaking) out there. We’ve got a great new Album of The Week from Emmylou Harris and then we’re ‘Under The Influence’ starting mid-afternoon.

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Pieces Of The Sky by Emmylou Harris NEW!

Emmylou Harris returns with our Album of The Week released on February 7, 1975 (my 21st birthday). This time it’s her second studio release and the first on a major label. It is a tour de force without a doubt. She covers songs by Dolly Parton, Lennon & McCartney, Charles & Ira Louvin, and Rodney Crowell, among others. But the most beautiful song on the album is one she co-wrote with Bill Danoff, Boulder To Birmingham, written for the great Gram Parsons, who passed in 1973.

3:00 p.m. Under the Influence: Various Artists

Hell, it’s always a good day to tune in, turn on, and drop out as far as I’m concerned. It’s a subject of many an artist, including Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Arlo Guthrie, The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, Bob Dylan, Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen, Donovan, Glen Frey, John Lee Hooker, Jonathan Edwards, Linda Ronstadt, Little Feat, The Traveling Wilburys, The Temptations, Small Faces, Steely Dan, Talking Heads, The Beatles, Neil Young, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Velvet Underground, The Rolling Stones, Dave Van Ronk, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Jackson Browne, Steve Winwood, Led Zeppelin, Harry Chapin, The Band, The Fraternity of Man and more!

We’re on track for a beautiful day here in the Boston area. The sun is shining and it’s nice and cool out today. Great day to open the windows and turn it up. So, it shall be. We’re on 24/7 and we’re commercial-free. And we’ve got The Music Mermaid at the helm. What could be better?

It’s the Final Airing of Karla Bonoff’s AOW, ‘The British Are Coming’ EP, and We Introduce Dolly Parton as This Week’s Featured Singer-Songwriter on Saturday, April 29, 2023

Good morning, weekenders! I have one more day left, but this is officially the first full day of the weekend, and we’ve got some great stuff lined up for you today.

Here’s today’s musical landscape:

9:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Karla Bonoff by Karla Bonoff FINAL AIRING!

We say farewell to Karla Bonoff’s great debut album this morning. We’ve already got another lined up for tomorrow by another great female songwriter, but you’ll just have to tune us in then to find out who it is.

12:00 p.m. The British Are Coming: Various Artists

Music from across the pond from the British Invasion and beyond. You’ll hear The Beatles, The Who, Dave Mason, Electric Light Orchestra, Petula Clark, The Zombies, The Hollies, Dusty Springfield, Small Faces. Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Kinks, The Dave Clark Five, The Bee Gees, The Moody Blues, Rod Stewart, George Harrison, Them, Herman’s Hermits, Gerry & The Pacemakers, Badfinger, The Yardbirds, Traffic, Elton John, Lulu, Pink Floyd, Yes, The Animals, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, The Spencer Davis Group, Cream, Donovan, The Rolling Stones and more!

8:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Dolly Parton NEW!

What can you say about Dolly Parton? She’s been a fixture on the country music scene since 1956, partnered up with Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris to form one of music’s most formidable supergroups (Trio), and is still active today. During that time, it is estimated that she has written about 3,000 songs. They have been covered by so many artists, including Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Tina Turner, Maria Muldaur, Waylon Jennings, Whitney Houston, The Incredible String Band and many more. You know, people keep talking about Whitney Houston’s cover of Parton’s I Will Always Love You, probably because it was associated with a movie. In reality, that cover is owned by Linda Ronstadt. Even Dolly says that. But I digress. This week, Dolly Parton is our featured singer-songwriter, and she’s doing the singing.

Hell, it’s Saturday. Forget the yard work and house painting. Tune in. Turn on. And drop out with us as we play you the finest music on the planet at no charge to you. We’re on 24/7 and we’re uninterrupted by rampant capitalism.

We are ‘Under The Influence’ at Midweek; We’ve Also Got Van Morrison and Eva Cassidy Along For the Ride, on Wednesday, February 15, 2023

Here’s your midweek lineup:

We start off the morning under the influence with songs about mind-bending substances, both legal and not. Hey, we’ve all been there at least once in our lives. Some of us more. You’ll hear Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Arlo Guthrie, The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, Bob Dylan, Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen, Donovan, Glen Frey, John Lee Hooker, Jonathan Edwards, Linda Ronstadt, Little Feat, The Traveling Wilburys, The Temptations, Small Faces, Steely Dan, Talking Heads, The Beatles, Neil Young, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Velvet Underground, The Rolling Stones, Dave Van Ronk, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Jackson Browne, Steve Winwood, Led Zeppelin, Harry Chapin, The Band, The Fraternity of Man and more!

4:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Van Morrison

Van takes his second turn as this week’s featured singer-songwriter. This guy has been at it for seven decades and is still going.

7:00 p.m. Eva Cassidy Live at Pearl’s, Annapolis, MD, September 14, 1994

Eva Cassidy was robbed of her future just two years after this performance when she passed away from cancer, but she left an awful lot of great music behind for us to enjoy. Luckily we’ve managed to find a some live performances to bring you over the past several years. Like many others, I never heard her before her death. If you’ve never heard Eva sing before, this would be a great night to introduce yourself to her talent.

We’re here 24/7 at no cost to you. We are totally free of charge and free of commercial advertising. We are all about the music and nothing more. Whether we have two people or two thousand listening, we are the same. Give us a listen.

Today We’re ‘Under The Influence’ of a Great EP, We Have Our Final Airing of “Route 66,” and LIVE DEAD! Later, Saturday, April 16, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers! It’s our usual Saturday here in The Mermaid Lounge, albeit with a bit more Open Stream this week. We’ll all be just a little ‘Under The Influence’ of a great EP here soon.

Go ask Alice…when she’s ten feet tall.

Here’s today’s mind-altering line-up:

11:00 a.m. Under The Influence: Various Artists

Yeah. We’ve all been here, no matter how much we choose to deny it. Some of us still are, illegal as well as legal. You’ll hear Arlo Guthrie, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, Bob Dylan, Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen, Glenn Frey, Donovan, John Lee Hooker, Jonathan Edwards, Linda Ronstadt, Little Feat, The Traveling Wilburys, The Temptations, Small Faces, Steely Dan, Talking Heads, The Beatles, Neil Young, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Velvet Underground, The Rolling Stones, Dave Van Ronk, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Jackson Browne, Steve Winwood, Led Zeppelin, Harry Chapin, The Band, The Fraternity of Man, and more!

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Route 66 by Asleep at The Wheel FINAL AIRING!

We bid this fine selection a fond farewell after this airing, but we’ll have a brand new selection for you tomorrow!

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco, October 12, 1968 NEW!

Another new soundboard here. We have previously aired the 1966 show at the Avalon, but this gem is from 1968. Same venue; new show. Enjoy

So, what are you all waiting for? This is a perfect day to get acquainted with us. And it won’t cost you a thing. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, as they say. Who knows. This could be the biggest find of your day!

We’ve Hit Friday and We’re ‘Under The Influence’ During The Day, and Partying With The Heartbreakers Later, March 18, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! Well, we’ve made it to the end of the work week (for most) and we’ve got a great musical line up for you today that starts with our ‘Under The Influence’ EP!

The caterpillar knew where it was at. He was ‘Under the Influence.’

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Under The Influence: Various Artists

Yeah. We have all been here at one time or another, haven’t we? I mean, if we are being honest about shit. Whether it’s martinis, hooch, or hallucinogens, at one time or another we’ve indulged. And musicians have been singing about it for decades. You’ll hear The Doors, The Byrds, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Arlo Guthrie, Donovan, Glenn Frey, Linda Ronstadt, Jonathan Edwards, Small Faces, The Rolling Stones, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, The Velvet Underground, Jackson Browne, Harry Chapin, Emmylou Harris, The Band, Bob Dylan, Eric Burdon & War, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Neil Young, The Fraternity of Man, and more!

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Petty Theft

If you’ve ever listened to Tom Petty’s Buried Treasure Show on Sirius-XM, you know where The Heartbreakers’ musical DNA comes from. One of the greatest rock n’ roll bands in the world is also one of the best damned cover bands on the planet. Tom Petty loved adding songs to The Heartbreakers’ live performances that paid homage to those whose music inspired them. This is one of our favorite playlists here in The Mermaid Lounge: The Heartbreakers as cover band. We’re sure you’ll love it too.

Yeah, folks, this is the day to tune us in. We’ve got some great music for you today, as we do every day, but this is certainly one of my favorite musical combinations of the programming realm. And before, after, and in between our programming, we give you that wide Open Stream 24/7. For free. Get in on it.
