Good morning, music lovers across the globe! We begin yet another work week here in The Mermaid Lounge. However, do not despair! We’ve got some great music lined up for you today that will help take the workday blues away.

11:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Johnny Rivers UPDATED!

Johnny Rivers was an Italian boy born in New York City, but raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he was influenced by the distinctive Louisiana music style. His repertoire includes pop, folk, blues and just plain good old rock n’ roll. He is best remembered for a string of hits between 1964 through 1968, including Memphis, Mountain of Love, Secret Agent Man, and The Seventh Son. He’s also written a number of songs, including Abraham, Martin and John, a great tune that became a hit for Dion. We’ve recently expanded this playlist just a bit and we’ve got it for you today.

Yes, you can hear these songs today, but when they were first released it was another story. Some were banned for their sexual references, some for their weed references, some because of their references to guns, and some because of their references to the almighty supreme being. We close out the programming with a live performance by a favorite here in The Mermaid Lounge. They began as Bob Dylan’s back-up band and turned into one of the most well-respected and influential bands in all of popular music. This one was broadcast live on the legendary radio show, The King Biscuit Flower Hour.

Let’s face it. Mondays suck. The one thing we can offer to improve the situation is great music. We’re here 24/7 (not just when we have programming), uninterrupted by commercial advertising of any kind (just a few station I.D. announcements from yours truly so you know where you are), and at no cost to you. This is the final airing of Jackson Browne as our featured singer-songwriter, an artist who wrote for others during the sixties, helped pioneer country-rock down in Laurel Canyon and put the Eagles on the map, and whose own career took off in the seventies and is still rolling. Don’t miss it. Tomorrow, we’ll have a brand new artist.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Carly Simon NEW!

This one has been on my ‘to do’ list for a while and I’ve finally brought it to fruition here. Carly Simon began singing with her sister, Lucy, back in 1963 and strung together a bunch of great hits during the seventies like Anticipation, That’s The Way I’ve Always Heard It Should Be, and You’re So Vain. While Mick Jagger appears on You’re So Vain and everyone assumed it was about him, Carly Simon actually revealed that it was about Warren Beatty.

We’re just getting warmed up for the weekend here in The Mermaid Lounge, so do give us a shot. We’re totally free 24/7 and we do not run commercial advertising. The third and final installment as we roll out the brand new Heartbreakers’ compendium of their legendary 20-night residency as The Fillmore House Band. They threw away the script and kicked ass, and every one of them felt it was the most creative opportunity the band had, and the highlight of their time together. For the first time ever, there are more cover songs on a Heartbreakers album than original compositions. That was by design as they chose to pay homage to those artists who inspired them. They are, in our humble opinion, the best cover band on the planet.

7:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Dan Fogelberg NEW!

It’s time to flip the switch to a new featured singer-songwriter, and Dan Fogelberg is one of the most underappreciated. Except here in The Mermaid Lounge, where we made him one of the very first artists to have a ‘Spotlight.’ Today he starts a week in the spotlight as our featured singer-songwriter.

Tonight we bit a fond farewell to one of our favorite albums and bands as we close out this week’s featured album. We’ll be back tomorrow with a brand new selection.

This is not the place to detail that, but I will be writing a separate blog post on that very soon, so stay tuned! We’ve added some great artists we’ve been working on and bolstered the content of many others!

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Everybody Knows by Stephen Stills & Judy Collins NEW!

And yes, everybody knows that the two were a “thing” in 1968 into 1969, and that Stephen Stills wrote songs about her, namely Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and Judy. In spite of the fact that Stills has played on several of Collins’ songs, they never made an album together or toured together until 2017, with the release of this collaboration. We’ve got it for you this week.

7:00 p.m. Joni Mitchell Live at Club 47, Cambridge, Massachusetts, January 10, 1968

We go all the way back to 1968 for this Joni Mitchell performance at Club 47 here in the Boston area. It would later be called Passim’s Coffee House. Under either name, it has historically been a great music venue. I remember being in Harvard Square during a snow storm and dropping in to warm up. That was the night I had the honor of seeing Guy Clark for the very first time ever and it was one of the most memorable musical experiences of my life. But I digress. Club 47 was an old haunt for Joni Mitchell, and tonight we play her 1968 performance there in celebration of her 79th birthday (November 7).

Join us here in The Mermaid Lounge for another great day of music. Programming notwithstanding, the majority of our musical day is on wide Open Stream under the supervision of The Music Mermaid. It doesn’t get any better than that. Oh, wait, yes it does. Did I mention that we are totally free? No strings. No surprises. Just music.
