One of the founding fathers of rock n’ roll takes the spotlight tonight. Richard Wayne Penniman was an American musician, singer and songwriter who was influential in rock n’ roll for seven decades. When his first song was released, Tutti Frutti, it was an immediate number one. This was followed by another number one, Long Tall Sally. After that, he released fifteen more singles in just three years. He is one of our Founding Fathers.

We are truly paying homage to the bands we love so much here in The Mermaid Lounge today as we take you all the way back to 1968 for this great performance at The Matrix Club in San Francisco.

7:00 p.m. The Beatles Complete Apple Rooftop Concert, London, UK, January 30, 1969

It was short and, oh, so sweet. I would love to have been there for the final live performance ever by the Fab Four. The city was at a standstill, people were getting out of their cars to listen, and the Bobbies were clearly trying to figure out where the music was coming from. It was a great way to go out, as they say.

Instead, I just leave you with the New York Times review of the album. It’s the fourth review I’ve read over the past few days. Not one of them is in the negative category.

We’re back again this month with The British Invasion and beyond, from The Beatles to Queen. It’s music from across the pond. They inspired us and we inspired them. That’s the way music works, people. We did several of these last year, but this is the first one we’ve done this year. The album itself was released on April 27, 1987. The single Jammin’ Me, written by Tom Petty and Bob Dylan, was released on April 18, 1987. It would go to no. 1 on The Billboard charts, and piss Eddie Murphy off. Neither Petty nor Dylan would back down. You simply don’t mess with Dylan’s lyrics.
