‘Are You Ready for The Country’, a Guy Clark Spotlight and ‘Live’ Lukas Nelson & POTR on Saturday, May 11, 2024

Good morning, musicologists! We keep it on the country side today with our programming, both old school and country-rock, that great sound out of Laurel Canyon.

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. Are You Ready for The Country: Various Artists

Another EP out of mothballs this morning as we pay homage to the old standards and the country rockers with The Eagles, Asleep at The Wheel, The Byrds, Emmylou Harris, Neil Young, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Dolly Parton, Poco, Linda Ronstadt, Alison Krauss & Union Station, The Marshall Tucker Band, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Jerry Jeff Walker, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Carlene Carter, Rosanne Cash, The Desert Rose Band, Kris Kristofferson, Gram Parsons, John Prine, Tom Rush, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Townes Van Zandt and more!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Guy Clark

Surely one of the absolute best country singer-songwriters ever. I know I’ve told this story before, but one dreadfully snowy night my friend George and I were walking around Harvard Square freezing when we decided to go into a place called Passim’s Coffee House to warm up. We had no idea who Guy Clark was, but we paid the cover charge and went inside. It was undoubtedly one of the best things I ever did in my life. I was totally hooked. And he played a mean fiddle to boot.

8:00 p.m. Lukas Nelson & Promise of The Real Live at The Boathouse, Newport News, VA, June 14, 2018

We close out the country programming with Lukas Nelson and his great little band. Lukas comes from great country outlaw pedigree, so it’s no wonder we love him here in The Mermaid Lounge.

We’re here 24/7 for your listening pleasure, at absolutely no charge to you and with absolutely no commercial interruption. Ever. Just an occasional station I.D. bit courtesy of yours truly. That’s it. The button’s below.

Monday Brings Our ‘Are You Ready for the Country’ EP and Ry Cooder & David Lindley ‘Live’ in Austria, April 17, 2023

Good morning, marathoners! Yes, it’s the Boston Marathon today and the 10th Anniversary of the bombing. We’re staying right here in The Mermaid Lounge all day where the living is easy peasy. We’ve got a great lineup in store for you.

Here’s your Monday, Monday lineup:

10:00 a.m. Are You Ready for The Country: Various Artists

Today it’s the best of real country combined with the innovation of those who melded country with rock. You’ll hear Guy Clark, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young, The Byrds, Gram Parsons, Pure Prairie League, Asleep At The Wheel, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Bob Dylan, The Eagles, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, The Marshall Tucker Band, Jerry Jeff Walker, Mudcrutch, The Band, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Glen Campbell, Rosanne Cash, Dan Fogelberg, New Riders of The Purple Sage, John Prine, The Desert Rose Band and more!

7:00 p.m. Ry Cooder & David Lindley Live at The Vienna Opera House, Vienna, Austria, July 6, 1995 NEW!

This is a brand new live recording to The Lounge with two greats on the road together. You probably all know Ry Cooder. If you don’t know David Lindley, he’s one of the most accomplished musicians of his generation who supported some of the best, including Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Iggy Pop, Warren Zevon, Curtis Mayfield and Dolly Parton. He also founded the rock band El Rayo-X. He left this world on March 3 of this year. This one is for Mr. Lindley.

Hell, it’s Monday. We all need a boost as we start a new work week and try to make our way back to the weekend. We’re on 24/7 and we’re totally free of charge. Give us a listen.

Good Morning, Weekenders! We’ve Got the Final Airing of Our AOW, the ‘Are You Ready for The Country’ EP and a Brand New Singer-Songwriter Feature on Saturday, March 18, 2023

Yes, we’ve made it to Saturday, and that can only be a good thing. We’ve got some great stuff lined up, including the late, great Christine McVie as this week’s singer-songwriter.

Here’s your Saturday lineup:

9:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Hot Chili Mama by BeauSoleil FINAL AIRING!

We’re bidding a very fond farewell to BeauSoleil’s great album of Cajun and Zydeco music today, but there’s more where that came from. We promise. Tomorrow we’ll have a brand new album for you.

11:00 a.m. Are You Ready For The Country: Various Artists

We’re back with our great EP of real country (not bad pop bands with fiddles) and country-rock pioneers today, including Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, The Eagles, Guy Clark, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young, The Byrds, Gram Parsons, Pure Prairie League, Asleep At The Wheel, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, the Marshall Tucker Band, Jerry Jeff Walker, Mudcrutch, The Band, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Glen Campbell, Rosanne Cash, Dan Fogelberg, New Riders of The Purple Sage, John Prine, Chris Hillman & The Desert Rose Band and more!

7:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Christine McVie NEW!

Many people consider Stevie Nicks the driving force behind Fleetwood Mac, but we consider that force to be Christine McVie the writer and singer, of many of their biggest hits (Say You Love Me, Little Lies, Over My Head, You Make Loving Fun). Rolling Stone magazine calls her ‘the beating heart of Fleetwood Mac.’ She was was part of Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac (before Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham; when they were a blues band) and a woman who was a fixture in the mid-60’s British blues scene. She is this week’s featured singer-songwriter.

This is an excellent day to join us (not literally, because there are absolutely no ‘joinng’ requirements). See for yourself. Just pull up a tab and click the button below.

It’s Monday All Over Again and We’ve Got The Allman Brothers Band, ELO, and Emmylou Harris & The Desert Rose Band On Tap, May 9, 2022

Good Morning, Workforce! Hope you all had a great weekend. Yet another Moan-Day rolls around, but we’ve got you covered with some great music today. Not to worry. Just pull up a tab and chill.

Today’s ‘live’ feature is The Allman Brothers Band Live at the Beacon!

Here’s your music line-up:

11:00 a.m. The Allman Brothers Band Live at The Beacon Theatre, New York City, March 1992

Recorded live at The Beacon over two nights of a 10-night run on March 10 & 11, 1992. A legendary band at a legendary venue. There is absolutely no denying that The Allman Brothers Band was just a flat-out great band on stage. I saw them several times in my life, and they never disappointed.

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Electric Light Orchestra

Music maestro Jeff Lynne after The Move and before The Traveling Wilburys. ELO was one of the great ‘big sound’ bands that I could get into. Today we put them In the Spotlight.

7:00 p.m. Emmylou Harris with The Desert Rose Band Live at Nevada County Fairgrounds, Grass Valley, CA, August 3, 1986

The Desert Rose Band, consisting of Chris Hillman, Herb Pederson, and Jon Jorgenson is joined on stage by old friend Emmylou Harris at the Grass Valley Bluegrass Festival.

Come on, gang. It’s Monday and that is a day when everyone needs a little boost. Perhaps you’re home after celebrating ‘Domestic Supply of Infants Day’ (Alito’s words, not mine). Perhaps you’re back in the workaday hell-hole. Wherever you are today, pull up a tab and click on the button below. You’ll feel better. I promise.

We Close The Work Week With Our ‘Are You Ready For The Country’ EP, and Volume Two of Those Badass Guitarists, Friday, April 15, 2022

Good Morning, Weekenders! We’re getting there, and we’ve got a great musical line-up as we slide toward the weekend, including our ‘Are You Ready for The Country’ EP!

Well, are you?

Here’s Friday’s musical landscape:

11:00 a.m. Are You Ready for The Country: Various Artists

Today we’re back with some real country (not, as Tom Petty put it, “bad pop bands with fiddles”), along with the pioneers of country-rock. You’ll hear Guy Clark, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Neil Young, The Byrds, Gram Parsons, Pure Prairie League, Asleep At The Wheel, The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Bob Dylan, The Eagles, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, The Marshall Tucker Band, Jerry Jeff Walker, Mudcrutch, The Band, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Bonnie Raitt, Glen Campbell, Rosanne Cash, Dan Fogelberg, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen, The Desert Rose Band, John Prine and more!

7:00 p.m. Badass Guitarists, Volume Two: Various Artists

We heard volume one yesterday, and we’re back today with volume two as promised. You’ll hear the handiwork of Mike Campbell, George Harrison, Albert Lee, Lowell George, Duane Allman, Brian May, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Walsh, Jimmy Page, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Taj Mahal, Neil Young, Jerry Garcia, David Gilmour, Tom Petty, and more!

Look, it’s tax day. Everyone needs a cheering up on this day when you pay more than the corporations do. This is the perfect landing spot for that. Today we welcome the inhabitants of Macau to our musical family. That’s right on the southern coast of China. What are you waiting for?

Both Macca and Booker T. & The MG’s In the Spotlight Today, Emmylou Harris Sings With The Desert Rose Band, and The Shadow Later, Monday, January 18, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We are working in reverse today because there’s a lot of shit going on in The Mermaid Lounge today. Our music trivia will appear after this a bit later on. Sorry to upset your mojo.

Booker T. & The MG’s. One of the best. Unfortunately, there are people who have no idea what the fuck instruments actually sound like today. Yet they still call the shit they produce music.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Paul McCartney

With the Beatles, with Wings, and as a solo artist, Paul McCartney has stood the test of time. Yeah, he was the most commercial of The Beatles. Without that, there would not be the opportunity to create the other shit. Record companies don’t support people who don’t create revenue. That’s how capitalism works, like it or not.

3:00 p.m. Emmylou Harris & The Desert Rose Band

One of our favorites, Emmylou Harris, takes a turn with the Desert Rose Band, founded by ex-Byrd Chris Hillman. Other members include Herb Pederson, John Jorgenson, Bill Bryson, JayDee Maness, and Steve Duncan.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Booker T. & The MG’s

Ah yes, remember when instruments mattered in music? Now, according to Kanye West, Yeezy, Ye, Assclown of the Century, you can make all that shit sound with a computer and a program. Progress. Ain’t it great?

10:00 p.m. The Shadow: 08 Murder By The Dead NEW!

A convicted man sentenced to death vows retribution from the grave. A judge and a D.A. are murdered shortly after his execution. They better call The Shadow fast because the jury foreman is next unless someone figures this shit out.

Tune us in, people. You are wasting valuable hours of ear candy. Get on it.

Oh, Baby, It’s a Mudcrutch Monday (and it’s rare), Emmylou Harris Helps Out The Desert Rose Band, and The Death Ship Pulls Into Port, Monday, June 22, 2020

Good Morning, Ungovernables! I don’t know where music fits into your life, but I know where it fits into mine. And there are far worse ways to start the week.

Emmylou Harris-Desert Rose Chris Hillman small

Here’s your Monday musical landscape:

12:00 p.m.   Emmylou Harris With The Desert Rose Band

The Desert Rose Band was formed in 1985 by Chris Hillman (former member of The Byrds and co-founder of the Flying Burrito Brothers with Gram Parsons), John Jorgenson, and Herb Pederson (who has played with Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, Mudcrutch, John Fogerty, Stephen Stills and many others). Add Emmylou Harris to that mix, and you’ve got a musical bonfire.

4:00 p.m.     Mudcrutch Monday! Mudcrutch Live at the Fonda Theater, Los Angeles, CA, June 26, 2016 (Fan Recorded)   NEW!

This is a rarity in every sense of the word. Some days, things just fall in your lap, and that’s what happened here. I hit the veritable motherlode, and this is just the tip of the iceberg. It is a treat to hear Tom Petty and Mudcrutch live in concert, just as it’s a rush to hear Tom Petty with the Heartbreakers on stage. You can’t touch this shit.

The set list for this show will be up and running in the Playlist tab shortly. Just scroll to the bottom!

8:00 p.m.     The Inner Sanctum: The Death Ship   NEW!

Get your spooky on, people, because The Death Ship just pulled into a port near you.

Wherever you’re at, you need to be here with us on #BecomeUngovernable Radio because we’re all about being outside the system. Tune us in simply by clicking the link below. Yes, fucking Virginia, it’s as simple as that.
