He was a musical pioneer who combined traditional blues with rock, jazz and country to help give the Allman Brothers Band their amazing and unique sound. Gregg Allman became the heart and soul of the band after his brother died, and he did himself and Duane proud.

His songs have been sung by many, including Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt. He has also been part of the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band. Tonight we introduce him as our featured singer-songwriter.

Last week Guy Clark was our featured singer-songwriter and this week we give you his second studio album as our Album of The Week, recorded in Nashville and released in 1976. Clark wrote all the songs on the album with the exception of Black Haired Boy which he wrote with the help of his wife, Susanna. This was the first album I ever heard by Guy Clark. I immediately went out and bought his first, Old No. 1. That is already on our list for the future.

Color is a popular topic in the music world. Good morning, musicologists! As you know, we keep it simple on Sundays with plenty of wide Open Stream, but we do have a great new AOW and our original sixties rotation.

Here’s your simple Sunday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Buffalo Springfield by Buffalo Springfield NEW!

Although Buffalo Springfield wasn’t satisfied with this album, recorded in the summer of 1966 at Gold Star Studios, this was a groundbreaking album in many respects. Five of the songs were written by a guy named Neil Young, but he only sang lead on one of those. Richie Furay sang lead on the rest. Their first release from the album did not catch on nationally, but did make the Top 40 in Los Angeles during the month of August. However, by December, Stephen Stills’ For What It’s Worth became a national hit. The rest, as they say, is musical history. Aside from Neil Young, Stephen Stills and Richie Furay, the band was rounded out by Bruce Palmer (bass guitar) and Dewey Martin (drums, backing vocals).

Our first sixties extended playlist with five uninterrupted hours of music from the early-to-mid sixties (although I am sure some songs from the latter part of that decade slipped in). They have been covered by so many artists, including Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Tina Turner, Maria Muldaur, Waylon Jennings, Whitney Houston, The Incredible String Band and many more. You know, people keep talking about Whitney Houston’s cover of Parton’s I Will Always Love You, probably because it was associated with a movie. In reality, that cover is owned by Linda Ronstadt. Even Dolly says that. But I digress. This week, Dolly Parton is our featured singer-songwriter, and she’s doing the singing.
