We Keep It Simple On Sunday With The Byrds’ “Mr. Tambourine Man” as Our AOW and ‘The British Are Coming’ EP in the Afternoon, January 29, 2023

Good morning, Weekenders! You know we keep it pretty simple on Sundays here in The Mermaid Lounge with plenty of wide Open Stream and just a couple of (great) programming items.

Here’s your simple Sunday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Mr. Tambourine Man by The Byrds NEW!

This is the debut album by this great band, released on June 21, 1965, and marked the debut of the signature guitar sound of Jim McGuinn’s 12-string Rickenbacker guitar and the band’s amazing harmonizing, a vocal approach of the late, great David Crosby who would carry that tradition on into Crosby, Stills & Nash later in his career. This album consists mainly of folk covers, many written by Bob Dylan including the title tune and originals co-written by Gene Clark. The album provided the first American challenge to the chart dominance of The Beatles and other British invasion bands. The Byrds would go on to influence others in the sixties as well as future generations of musicians, including Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers who carried on the jangling sound of McGuinn’s 12-string Rickenbacker throughout their 40-year career. It’s the day after Thanksgiving, also known as Black Friday. Now, most people think of Black Friday as the start of the Christmas shopping season. Personally? Good Morning, Music Lovers! We continue our psychedelic album parade today with The Temptations and take a trip across the pond with ‘The British Are Coming,” an EP with music from the British Invasion and beyond!

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Cloud Nine by The Temptations NEW!

Released in 1969, this album was a turning point for both Motown and The Temptations as they not only added singer Dennis Edwards to replace the departing David Ruffin, and began a partnership with visionary writer-producer Norman Whitfield. Although at least half of the album is in the traditional Temptations R & B style, they began their journey into Psychedelic Soul with the song Cloud Nine and it’s great wah-wah guitar intro courtesy of Dennis Coffey, and especially with Runaway Child, Running Wild.

3:00 p.m. The British Are Coming: Various Artists

We go back to the sixties British Invasion here, but we do not stop there as we include music from our friends across the pond that spans a couple more generations (we’re very selective, however). Our Album of The Week this week is the fifth studio album by The Grateful Dead, American Beauty, which was released in 1970. It was born during a prolific composition spell between Jerry Garcia and Dead lyricist Robert Hunter. It would go from Gold to Platinum and to Double-Platinum status by 2001 and was listed as album number 215 on Rolling Stone’s Top 500 Albums of All Time by 2020. It spent 19 weeks on the Billboard 200 charts in 1970.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Warren Zevon

The excitable boy is back In the Spotlight. We haven’t heard this playlist for a bit, and the time is right. Warren Zevon, undeniably one of the most brilliant singer-songwriters of his generation whose compositions became hits for several artists, struggled to break through as a solo artist. That is, until Linda Ronstadt began singing his songs on her albums and on stage. The result was a great career that spanned a quarter century until his untimely death at the age of 56. Tune him in tonight.

Before, in between, and after our programming (which we keep to a minimum), you’ll be listing to all that great wide Open Stream with The Music Mermaid in charge. There are days when she even picks up a playlist or two on her own. You’ll never know unless you tune in. By the way, today we add the Republic of Korea and Lithuania to our list of listeners. Good Morning, Music Lovers! It’s pouring rain and incredibly windy here in the Beantown area this morning. Makes me want to hunker down and listen to this great music we’ve planned.

We’ve got some great, live Dr. John music for you today from Ultrasonic Studios in New York!

A great 20-song performance New Orleans’ Nitetripper, broadcast live by WLIR-FM in Long Island. This was when FM radio was king and we had all those great simulcast events going on. You’ll be seeing more of these as we move through 2022, but do not miss this one today. Dr. John is a NOLA legend.

3:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Wendy Waldman

Not only is Wendy Waldman a critically-acclaimed recording artists, she’s also recognized as a writer of multi-platinum songs for other artists, a producer, a teacher, and a working musician. In the early 70s, when folk-rock was coming into focus, she started a band called Bryndle with fellow artists Karla Bonoff, Kenny Edwards, and Andrew Gold. They made one unreleased album, and then went their separate ways. The rest, as they say, is musical history. Wendy Waldman went on to make several great albums. She became friends with Linda Ronstadt, singing back up on several songs and going on tour with Ronstadt. Karla Bonoff made her mark as a songwriter, while Kenny Edwards and Andrew Gold joined Linda Ronstadt. I consider Wendy Waldman one of the most underappreciated figures in popular music. Listen and you will too.

Driving and music somehow just go together, and I admit that many of the songs on this particular playlist give me ‘lead foot’ when I’m on the open road. I really do have to be careful when I’m cruisin’ and playin’ the radio with no particular place to go.
