We’re on ‘The Psychedelic Express,’ Then It’s Live Jefferson Airplane, and a Donovan ‘Spotlight’ on Saturday, August 2, 2025

Welcome, weekenders! We’re keeping it in a sixties groove today for sure as we get back on ‘The Psychedelic Express’ to start the morning.

Here’s how we keep it trippy today:

9:00 a.m. The Psychedelic Express: Various Artists

We don’t need no tickets to hear The Beatles, Vanilla Fudge, The Chambers Brothers, The Electric Prunes, Jefferson Airplane, The Animals, Blues Image, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Donovan, The Byrds, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Traffic, Cream, Dr. John, Procol Harum, The Who, Canned Heat, Tommy James & The Shondells, Blind Faith, Grateful Dead, Velvet Underground, Big Brother & The Holding Company, and more!

We close it out with some trippy stuff from Donovan, one of our favorites here in The Mermaid Lounge.

We Begin June With Some Psychedelic Music, Live Otis Redding, and a Karla Bonoff ‘Spotlight,’ Sunday, June 1, 2025

Good morning, music lovers. We open the month with one of our favorite genres here, psychedelic music. Then we move onto The Big O and singer-songwriter Karla Bonoff!

Here’s your Sunday Funday lineup:

9:00 a.m. The Psychedelic Express: Various Artists

There are the artists who invented psychedelic rock and there are the artists who keep the genre alive. We’ve got it all, including The Beatles, Vanilla Fudge, The Chambers Brothers, the Electric Prunes, The Animals, Jefferson Airplane, Blues Image, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Donovan, The Byrds, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Traffic, Cream, Dr. John, Procol Harum, Fleetwood Mac, The Who, Canned Heat, Yes, Electric Light Orchestra, Tommy James & The Shondells, Mudcrutch, Blind Faith, Grateful Dead, Velvet Underground, Big Brother & The Holding Company and more!

4:00 p.m. Otis Redding Live at The Whiskey A Go Go, W. Hollywood, CA, April 9 & 10, 1966

The Big O left us all far too soon. He never got to see the heights his music would have taken him to. His hits and his legend were posthumous events. It amazes me to this day that people refer to Aretha Franklin’s classic anthem, Respect, without knowing that it was written by Otis Redding. Today we have a rare live performance by Otis Redding from the legendary Whiskey.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Karla Bonoff

We close the programming with an artist who has written many great songs made famous by artists like Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Alison Krauss and Wynonna Judd. Tonight we get to hear her sing them.

It’s a brand new month, and we’re off to a great start here. We’ve got some new summer music coming up as we prepare for a long, hot summer here. I have great foreboding under the present regime, but we will carry on here. Stay with us. The button is below.

Phil Ochs is the stuff of legends, blessed with great songwriting chops and sardonic humor along with a passion for social justice. He was one of the most prolific musical social activists of his generation. Today we put him ‘In the Spotlight’ and you can read more about him here in The Guardian.

8:00 p.m. We close out May Day with a live performance from James Brown, the hardest working man in show business, from the House of Blues in Las Vegas.

8:00 p.m. The Jefferson Airplane Live From Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA, May 7, 1969

We close it out on a trip in the Wayback Machine to a performance from one of the most influential bands in psychedelic music from Golden Gate Park.

We’re here again today as we are every day, and today we close the post by commending Senator Cory Booker for his heroic filibuster against the most evil empire of our time. We must prevail, folks. We did vow no politics, but these are the times that call for stepping outside those promises. And we’d like to tell you that we’re anti-capitalist because capitalism gone mad is what has brought us here. The button is below.

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of The Moody Blues

The band that started out singing R & B would eventually become one of the pioneers of the progressive rock genre. Today we’ve got them In the Spotlight.

Here’s a guy who defies all kinds of logic. Rundgren is a singer, songwriter and record producer who has indulged in a wide variety of styles as a member of Nazz and Utiopia, and as a solo artist. Today we have him in a live performance from Wisconsin.

We’re now on the downslide to the weekend once again, and we’re making the most of it here in The Mermaid Lounge. Did I mention that next week we’ll be debuting a brand new Laurel Canyon Playlist series? No? Well, we are, so stick around. The magic button is below.

It’s Wayback Machine Time With JeffersonAirplane, a Ride On ‘The Psychedelic Express’ and Cream’s Farewell on Sunday, August 25, 2024

4:00 p.m. Jimi Hendrix Live at The Berkeley Community Theater, Berkeley, CA, May 30, 1970

We’ve got Hendrix in a great live performance this afternoon that took place just months before his untimely death.

It was Jackie Onassis’ idea for Carly Simon to perform at Grand Central Station as a precursor to her first tour in 14 years. We’ve got it for you here this evening.
