It’s Digging Out Day Here and We’ve Got Our New Album of The Week Plus a Brand New Motown EP, Sunday, January 30, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’ve not only got our brand new Album of The Week for you today but we’ve got a brand new All-Motown EP to get you through the afternoon!

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Sticky Fingers by The Rolling Stones NEW!

Without a doubt, one of my favorite Rolling Stones albums of all time. It was their 9th British and 11th American studio release. It was released on April 23, 1971, and was the first released on their new (and their own) Rolling Stones Records. It was also their first album without Brian Jones, who had died two years earlier.

This is a companion EP to our ‘Little Bit O’ Soul’ EP. While we remove Eric Clapton from the limelight, we put Neil Young in the limelight. This isn’t a question of politics which, as you know, we keep out of this radio station’s airing. The public health is not a political issue, and medical misinformation is not in the public interest. We will neither participate in it nor will we give voice to those who do. Like Eric Clapton. Aside from Neil Young’s stand on the issue, consider that the man is the Energizer Bunny of rock n’ roll, recently releasing his 41st album and his 14th with Crazy Horse. His career has spanned more than a half century, and he is deserving of the spotlight.

The Beatles certainly have had their share of imaginary friends: Maxwell and his silver hammer, Jeremy Hillary Boob (aka, Nowhere Man), Lucy who flew around the sky with diamonds, the tiger-hunting Bungalow Bill (who always took his mom). And some have been drawn from real life, like Penny Lane’s barber, the man in the mack who wouldn’t let John and Yoko get married, and Eleanor Rigby. We’ve got them here for you today in one place.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Blood On The Tracks by Bob Dylan

Once again, we’re winding down on this one and are preparing for the next album. This is our next-to-last airing. Our final will be on Saturday.

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and this playlist proves it. Here we give you the original versions of some great songs along with their reboots. Sunday Gives Us ‘Blood On The Tracks’ As Our New Album of The Week, and The Sixties Rotation, Volume Two EP, January 23, 2022

Good Morning, Weekenders! Maybe you’re sleeping in; maybe not. But we never actually sleep here in The Mermaid Lounge. We blast out music on a global basis 24/7!

Mid-afternoon brings a little under five hours of the best of the mid-to-late sixties!

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Blood On The Tracks by Bob Dylan NEW!

Dylan is another one of those guys who gives me fits. It’s difficult, if not impossible, for me to pick a favorite album. Is it Desire? Is it Blood On The Tracks? Is it Nashville Skyline? I don’t know. It varies with my musical mood, I guess. I have the same problem with The Heartbreakers and The Beatles.

This is Bob Dylan’s 15th studio album, released on January 20. 1975, so we honor this album very close to it’s 47th anniversary, written at a time when there was a lot of stress in Dylan’s personal life. Jakob Dylan once described this album as “my parents talking,” but his father insists it’s not autobiographical. Either way, this album logged in at no. 16 on Rolling Stone’s Top 500 Albums of All Time. By 2004, it has risen to no. 9. It reached no. 1 on The Billboard 200 Chart, and no. 4 on the UK Albums Chart. Give it a listen. It is undoubtedly one of Dylan’s very best.

The Sixties Rotations (volumes 1 & 2) were the very first playlists we ever put together for this station. They have both expanded to EP’s at this stage of the game, and today we give you the one that focuses on the mid-to-late sixties. 11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Teaser and the Firecat by Cat Stevens (also known as Yusuf Islam) NEW!

This is one of the Cat’s best albums and is undoubtedly one of my favorite albums of all time. I recently read a review of the album where the author stated that Cat Stevens was a “pop” artist at heart. It’s funny how music is in the ears of the beholder. I’ve always viewed Cat Stevens as a folk-rock musician. Labels do not matter, at the end of the day. It’s what you like. On a more somber note, I remember the dark days after the 9-11 attacks, and Cat Stevens being denied entry into the United States because he had converted to Islam. I have a difficult time imagining Cat Stevens as a terrorist. Seriously.

This was the very first playlist we ever built back in June of 2017, when we started this up and opened our Facebook page. 11:00 a.m. The Blues Project: Reunion in Central Park, NY, June 24, 1973 NEW!

The original members of The Blues Project reunited as part of the Schaefer Music Festival in Central Park in 1973 and we’ve got their live performance here for you today. The Schaefer Music Festival was a “thing” back in the day. I believe they had their name on the Bicentennial Concert (Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, among others) here back in 1976 also. That one was held at…wait for it…Schaefer Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts. Just a bit of non-essential music history.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Magical Mystery Tour by The Beatles

An EP in the UK, but a full-blown album here in the U.S. as Capitol Records added their five hit releases from 1967 to create an album of timeless music. People often raise their eyes on this one, but the fact is that it not only made our list, but the Rolling Stone list of the top 25 albums of 1967. Released as an EP in Great Britain, the U.S. version became a full-blown album when Capitol Records added the hit singles All You Need Is Love, Hello Goodbye, Strawberry Fields Forever, Penny Lane, and Baby You’re a Rich Man. The music is timeless, people.

3:00 p.m. The British Are Coming!: Various Artists

Starting mid-afternoon, we bring you music from across the pond, as they say. It’s fair to say that the Brits were influenced by the American rock n’ roll scene, and the same holds true for the Americans. They were equally influenced by the sounds coming out of Britain. Another new live extravaganza from the consummate road warriors. I’m not sure how many people listen to the Dead’s studio stuff (I do), but I know far more people prefer them live. They are the world’s ultimate jam band for a reason. This performance is no exception.

Hey, it’s Saturday. Some of us are still in retail bondage, but many are not. What better time to make this your ‘go-to’ radio station?
