We Welcome A New Month With Our Original Sixties Rotation, and Jackson Browne Owns Our Album of The Week, Sunday, August 1, 2021

Here we are starting another month together here in The Mermaid Lounge, and we have our very first long-player ever created up today featuring the music that inspired this station. We also have our brand new Album of The Week.

We have two Sixties Rotations; today we offer the Original Sixties Rotation.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Downhill From Everywhere by Jackson Browne NEW!

Great rockers never really die, and neither do great singer-songwriters. And Jackson Browne is one of the elites in my book. In every article I read, the album is being described as a boomer faces his own mortality, and it may well be that because Jackson Browne has always been introspective. Do I think it’s his best? No. Do I think it’s a great album? I do. Especially since I sometimes too find myself confronting my own mortality.

3:00 p.m. The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

This is due for an update, but it’s pretty damned serviceable as it is. We have two sixties rotations because we have so much sixties music. This is more geared toward the earlier part of the sixties. Since this is the first of the two we put together, we can it The Original Sixties Rotation. It is indeed the music that inspired me to start this station and share my record collection with you. More than five hours of sixties music uninterrupted begins at mid-day.

You’ll hear Gerry & The Pacemakers, The Beatles. The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Them, The Hollies, Petula Clark, The Searchers, Little Eva, The Turtles, The Grateful Dead, Barry McGuire, Buddy Hollie, Johnny Rivers, Bobbie Gentry, The Dave Clark Five, The Supremes, Bob Dylan, and many more.

Sunday is a day of rest. Unless, of course, you’re caught up in that retail nonsense where you have to shop all seven days of the week to support the capitalist state. This guy is my personal songwriting favorite in the post-Petty era. Jakob Dylan recently gave an interview, in fact, in which he said that his friend Tom Petty loomed large over this album, his first in ten years with The Wallflowers. We are certainly glad they are back.

The music that inspired me to start this radio station is back for another uninterrupted five-hour stint today. We had a minor delay to pay honor to The Fillmore, but we are back on track now. This is the music that covers the mid-to-late sixties with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Doors, Janis Joplin (with and without Big Brother), The Kinks, The Grateful Dead, The Chambers Brothers, Melanie, The Temptations, The Stone Poneys (featuring Linda Ronstadt), The Band, Bob Dylan, The Four Tops, Cream, Derek & The Dominos, Scott McKenzie, The Mamas & The Papas, and many, many others.

Yes, it’s the final day of June as we continue to melt here in the northeast. Hopefully, the end of the month will bring an end to this misery. Today we’ve got some live Stones for you. I’ve only seen them a couple of times in my lifetime, both times during the seventies. They were great on stage, and Mick Jagger did not disappoint. During her heyday, Linda Ronstadt proclaimed the Stones her favorite rock n’ roll band. That has a certain symmetry to it if you’ve heard her live performance of Tumblin’ Dice.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Simon & Garfunkel

We haven’t aired this one for a while, and these guys certainly are due some time in the spotlight. They made their debut back when they were sixteen years old, singing Hey Little Schoolgirl. That was back in the fifties. Since then, they’ve sold upwards of 105 million records.

All around this light programming, we have a (mostly) Open Stream Wednesday, circulating our 27,000-song standard rotation. Definitely a good day to find out what we’re all about. Best of all: We’re totally free 24/7, uninterrupted by advertisers or chatty DJ’s who don’t know when to shut the fuck up.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Old Yellow Moon by Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell NEW!

This fantastic 2013 release won the Grammy Award for the Best Americana Album. It was Harris’ 13th Grammy. The album itself was her twenty-seventh studio release, and Crowell’s tenth. Although they originally met in 1974, it took them until 2012 to record an album together. I saw the tour promoting this album, and the musical chemistry between Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell was amazing.

It only took the pair two years to release a follow up album called The Travelin’ Kind, and we’ll be featuring that as a future Album of The Week.

Good Morning, Musicologists! It’s Friday once again and we are giving you something old and something new, and commemmorating a great album release today.

11:00 a.m. Derek & The Dominos Live at The Fillmore East, New York City, October 23, 1970 NEW!

On October 23 and 24, 1970, Derek & The Dominos played two shows at the famed Fillmore East. We have the first night’s performance here today.

3:00 p.m. NOT The Album of The Week: Sargeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band NEW!

This is not a regular feature of our station, but we do it once in a while when the occasion calls for it. Today, we are running this in commemoration of the release of one of the most incredible albums of all time, Sargeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. It was released fifty-four years ago on June 2, 1967.

This was The Beatles’ eighth studio album, and was the first where the track listing was the same on both the US and UK version. It was the first album to have all of the lyrics printed on the cover. Musicologists recognize this album as the first concept album ever. The album spent 27 weeks at the top of the UK charts, and 15 on top of the US charts.

It’s Our Monthly Visit With The British, and Carly Simon’s “Hotcakes” is Our Album of The Week, Sunday, April 11, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! It’s another fine Sunday here in The Mermaid Lounge (although, I confess that I am writing this earlier than usual). We have a new album of the week, and we feature our five-hour British Invasion playlist today.

Here’s today’s simple but satisfying line-up:

12:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Hotcakes by Carly Simon NEW!

Hotcakes was Carly Simon’s fourth studio album, released by Elektra Records in 1974. She recorded the album while she was pregnant with her first child, and I have to say that it’s one of the best albums on the planet. It is also one of the hottest-sellers of her career. Unfortunately for Carly, Elektra released two other albums that year, one was Planet Waves by Dylan and the other was Court & Spark by Joni Mitchell. That kept Hotcakes off the top spot. It peaked at number three.

The album generated two hits, Mockingbird, which she recorded with her then-husband James Taylor, and the other was Haven’t Got Time For The Pain. However, I have to agree with David Geffen’s assessment that Forever My Love was the finest song she ever recorded.

Once again, we give you more than five hours of great music from across the pond, from the British Invasion bands up through the mid eighties.
