His songs have been sung by many, including Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt. He has also been part of the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band. Tonight we introduce him as our featured singer-songwriter.

Back in 1997, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers played a 20-night, sold-out residency at The Fillmore West where they broke the rules and the mold, tossing out their set lists and allowing the fans to suggest songs to sing. The result? Each night, a different set list. Petty announced to the crowd, “We all feel this might be the high point of our time together as a group. It’s going to be hard to get us off this stage tonight.” And that was a very good thing. We will air the first part tonight. The next two parts will be aired Wednesday and Thursday of this week. (Because Tuesday is Bluesday only.)

Maria Muldaur got her start during the great folk revival of the sixties hanging out in Greenwich Village. She has not only made great solo albums, but has sung harmony and background vocals for scores of other artists, including Linda Ronstadt, the Jerry Garcia band and the Jim Kweskin Jug Band. Her repertoire includes folk, blues, jazz, pop and spiritual music. This particular album pays tribute to Crescent City soul and includes many New Orleans artists, including Dr. John. Not to be missed.

We’re back with our homage to the sounds of Motown, the music that made America dance. Although not a commercial success like Dylan, Townes Van Zandt is often put on the same pedestal. He was a prolific songwriter whose compositions are considered masterpieces of American songwriting, such as Pancho & Lefty, For The Sake of The Song, Tecumseh Valley and If I Needed You. His songs have been recorded by hundreds of artists, including Emmylou Harris (the absolute best version of Pancho & Lefty ever, IMO), Norah Jones, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Gillian Welch, Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan himself.

I could write tomes here about Susan Tedeschi, but I don’t have to. All you need to do is check out her Wikipedia page. I am, however, proud to say she’s Boston born and raised and graduated from the Berkeley College of Music at the age of 20 with her degree in music composition and performance. Today, she’s a musical legend at the helm of the Tedeschi Trucks Band with her husband, former Allman Brothers Band guitarist Derek Trucks. Acknowledged as one of the finest blues singers, her voice is a cross between Janis Joplin and Bonnie Raitt, who she claims as influences. Her guitar work has been influenced by Stevie Ray Vaughan, Johnny “Guitar” Watson, Buddy Guy and Doyle Bramhall II. Tedeschi Trucks is on a nationwide tour right now. You can see for yourself. They’re scheduled for Boston on September 27.
