She began that climb to the top in 1975 and was the Queen of Rock during the seventies, gracing the covers of Rolling Stone (more than once), Time, Newsweek, Cashbox, Circus, Creem and others. We go all the way back to 1968 for this Joni Mitchell performance at Club 47 here in the Boston area. It would later be called Passim’s Coffee House. Under either name, it has historically been a great music venue. I remember being in Harvard Square during a snow storm and dropping in to warm up. That was the night I had the honor of seeing Guy Clark for the very first time ever and it was one of the most memorable musical experiences of my life. But I digress. Club 47 was an old haunt for Joni Mitchell, and tonight we play her 1968 performance there in celebration of her 79th birthday (November 7).

Join us here in The Mermaid Lounge for another great day of music. Programming notwithstanding, the majority of our musical day is on wide Open Stream under the supervision of The Music Mermaid. Hendrix performed this one just a few months before his untimely death. It’s also brand new to the station; we’ve never heard it before ourselves.

It was one of those nights where I hadn’t yet decided on the second act for today. Then I saw Linda Ronstadt’s name trending on Twitter. Like many of her fans, I went into a panic. I was happy to find out that it was just an old interview where she skewered Rupert Murdoch…at a time where most of us hadn’t yet been exposed to what he was really about. She, however, was dating Jerry Brown at the time and was very much in tune. Needless to say, I was relieved. Therefore, you all have this great concert to go to tonight!

Life is full of risks. This is not one of them. This is a no-brainer. We play music all day and night, non-stop, completely free to the public. No. You cannot created “custom” playlists here. But that’s not what radio is all about. For me, the excitement came from wondering what song was coming next. No. You will not hear heavy metal, rap, hip-hop, disco or any related content here. 11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Aftermath by The Rolling Stones NEW!

The Rolling Stones recorded this album at RCA Studios in California in December of 1965 and March of 1966 during breaks in their international tour. It is considered to be an artistic breakthrough for the Stones. It is the first album of original compositions they released, all credited to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Brian Jones also began taking a more active role in their music, experimenting with instruments they’d never used before, including sitar, Appalachian dulcimer, Japanese koto, and marimbas. Aftermath topped the British album charts for eight consecutive weeks and eventually achieved platinum album status from the Recording Industria Association of America (RRIA).

Released in 1999, this album by Alison Krauss is categorized as “country, bluegrass, and adult contemporary” (whatever that means). Critical commentary on this one is that in spite of the dobro and mandolin, Alison Krauss is a pop star at heart. Please. I never listen to critics. If I did, I wouldn’t have the album collection I do. Music is in the ear of the beholder. And life is too short to listen to shitty music. Regardless of what they call it, this is a great album.

10:00 a.m. Tom Petty’s Top 100 Songs UPDATED!

We started at 50 songs the first time we aired this; then moved up to 65. To hell with it, Petty’s up to 100 now and he deserves to be there. We’ve got Petty solo, as a Heartbreaker, with Mudcrutch, and as Charlie T. Wilbury Jnr. Most are original compositions. Some are covers. Some were only ever done as part of ‘live’ performances. No matter. The man is a musical godsend. I think we’re pretty measured on this station, and tend to underplay our house bands to remain in control. Today, we get to do the opposite.
