Thursday It’s Our House EP, an Alison Krauss ‘Spotlight’ Feature, and Live Jimi Hendrix, On January 2, 2025

Good morning, musicologists and welcome to day two of uncertainty in the world, but not here in The Mermaid Lounge where we have our usual eclectic collection on tap!

Here’s Thursday’s musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. The #BecomeUngovernable House Playlist: Various Artists

We start out with our House EP with music from Barry McGuire, The Temptations, Edwin Starr, Peter Tosh, The Beatles, T. Rex, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, Country Joe & The Fish, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Joan Baez, CSNY, Pink Floyd, The Animals, Ten Years After, Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, Three Dog Night, Jimmy Cliff, Richie Havens, Marvin Gaye, The Association, Phil Ochs, Tom Rush, The Band and more!

4:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Alison Krauss

An American treasure with a beautiful voice. She’s also a mean fiddle player. We give you her music from her time with Union Station, her unlikely pairing with Robert Plant, and as a solo artist.

8:00 p.m. Jimi Hendrix Live at The Berkeley Community Center, Berkeley, CA, May 30, 1970

We close with a live Hendrix performance in Berkeley, just four months before his death.

We’re here 24/7 and we play music 365 days a year at no cost to you, our listeners. There’s no commercial advertising and no chatty DJ’s to break the mood. The button is below. See for yourselves.

Today It’s Our ‘Ode to Morning’ EP, New Heartbreakers Music, and Amy Winehouse on Thursday, December 26, 2024

Good morning, musicologists and we’re over the hump and headed for the weekend. We start out with songs about morning, then it’s the new-ish deluxe edition of Long After Dark and some live Amy Winehouse.

Here’s your Thursday lineup:

9:00 a.m. Ode To Morning: Various Artists

We start out the day with songs about morning, my favorite time of day, with Cat Stevens, Hoyt Axton, The Beatles, Neil Young, The Rascals, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, James Taylor, Gram Parsons, Simon & Garfunkel, Taj Mahal, Harry Chapin, Linda Ronstadt, Dan Fogelberg, Three Dog Night, Ry Cooder, Tim Buckley, Muddy Waters, Jonathan Edwards, Bob Dylan, Badfinger, Townes Van Zandt, Chris Hillman and more!

This is a new release of one of The Heartbreakers’ sleeper albums. I say that because it was probably one of their least appreciated offerings, yet there are plenty of great songs on here beyond You Got Lucky, one of their signature hits. This release offers four never-before-heard songs, so that’s like brand new Heartbreaker music. It also contains an expanded version of one of the band’s most fun songs and a cult favorite, Heartbreakers Beach Party. A few songs appear twice because they were recorded for videos which appeared on French TV. As such, they are slightly different from each other. Enjoy. I did.

8:00 p.m. Amy Winehouse Live at Porchester Hall, London, UK, March 8, 2007

We don’t play much music from this time, but Amy Winehouse is an exception because she was a true R & B artist and we can appreciate that. Unfortunately, her demons got the best of her before she realized her true potential.

We embark on another day. Some of you will be back at work after Christmas and some will be on vacation. Either way, we remain on the air 24/7, totally free and with no commercial advertising. The button is below.

Today We ‘Paint It Black’, Then It’s Harrison & Clapton Live in Japan and Brandi Carlile Later on Friday, November 29, 2024

Yeah, it’s Black Friday. We’re not selling anything. We’re giving you free music, so we start it all out with our ‘Paint It Black’ playlist…not quite an EP, but close!

Here’s your Black Friday anti-capitalist lineup:

10:00 a.m. Paint It Black: Various Artists

We’ve got an EP about colors and we’ve got a slightly smaller playlist for the color black. You’ll hear The Rolling Stones, The Wallflowers, James Brown, Three Dog Night, The Beatles, Warren Zevon, The Band, Nina Simone, Curtis Mayfield, Lucinda Williams, John Lee Hooker, J.D. Souther, Jethro Tull, Guy Clark Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Tom Rush and more!

4:00 p.m. George Harrison & Eric Clapton Live at The Nagoya International Exhibition Hall, Nagoya, Japan, December 5, 1991

This afternoon we have two good friends, who also happen to be two stellar musicians, playing together on the same stage.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Brandi Carlile

Ten-time Grammy award winner Brandi Carlile closes the day’s programming with folk rock, alternative country, Americana and classic rock.

We’re here 24/7 playing the best music on the planet at no cost to the listening public. No strings. No bullshit. No commercial advertising. We’re all about the music. We have nothing to sell you on Black Friday. See for yourself. The button is below.

We’re Weekenders With Our House EP, Live Bob Marley & The Wailers, and a Joan Baez Spotlight on Saturday, November 2, 2024

We’re off to the weekend races (except I have one more day of work here) and we start off with a great day featuring our House EP!

Here’s your Saturday lineup:

9:00 a.m. The #BecomeUngovernable House EP: Various Artists

The music that provided inspiration for the station from Barry McGuire, The Temptations, Edwin Starr, Peter Tosh, The Beatles, T. Rex, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, Country Joe & The Fish, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Joan Baez, CSNY, Pink Floyd, The Animals, Ten Years After, Plastic Ono Band, Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, Three Dog Night, Jimmy Cliff, Marvin Gaye, The Association, Phil Ochs, Tom Rush, The Band and more!

4:00 p.m. Bob Marley & The Wailers Live at The Santa Barbara County Bowl, Santa Barbara, CA, November 25, 1979

This afternoon we’ve got some live Wailers music from the Santa Barbara County Bowl.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Joan Baez

We close out the day with a Spotlight feature with Joan Baez, a musical legend whose career has spanned six decades.

We’re here as usual bringing you the best music on the planet every single day at no cost and with no commercial advertising. We’re not about profit. We’re about music and, if you like what we play, we’re happy to share. The button is below.

Saturday Brings Our ‘Ode To Morning’ EP, The Pre-Disco Bee Gees, and The Allman Brothers Band, October 26, 2024

Welcome Weekenders! Today we open with our ‘Ode to Morning’ multi-artist EP, followed by the Bee Gees In The Spotlight and The Allman Brothers Band in concert later.

Here’s your Saturday lineup:

9:00 a.m. Ode To Morning: Various Artists

We start the day with the sun coming up and songs about the morning from Hoyt Axton, Yusuf/Cat Stevens, The Beatles, Neil Young, The Rascals, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, James Taylor, Graham Parson, Taj Mahal, Simon & Garfunkel, Linda Ronstadt, Harry Chapin, Dan Fogelberg, Three Dog Night, Ry Cooder, Tim Buckley, Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan, Jonathan Edwards, Badfinger, Townes Van Zandt, Chris Hillman and more!

There are a lot of before-and-after bands, like The Doobies before Michael McDonald (the old Doobies were better). Before the Bee Gees somehow managed to immerse themselves in disco, there was a really great and innovative rock band in there. That is the band we celebrate with this playlist. You won’t hear Stayin’ Alive here or any other Bee Gees music from that phase. That’s a promise.

8:00 p.m. The Allman Brothers Band Live at The Atlanta International Pop Festival, Middle Georgia Raceway, Byron, GA, July 3-5, 1970

The Brothers bring it to the Atlanta International Pop Festival to close out Saturday’s musical festivities. But the music continues 24/7.

We’ve made it to the weekend, my friends, and that is always a good thing. After today, I get two days off so that I can start lining up next week’s music. We’re on 24/7. We’re totally free. The button is below.

We Open With Our ‘Ode to Morning’ EP, Then We Have a New Turtles Spotlight Feature, and Clapton Live at The Baloise Sessions, Monday, September 23, 2024

Good morning, workers! You’re back at it today and so are we! We have a brand new Spotlight featuring The Turtles sandwiched between songs about morning and live Clapton!

Here’s your Monday, Monday lineup:

9:00 a.m. Ode To Morning: Various Artists

We closed with songs about the night, so it’s only fitting that we open with songs about morning today. You’ll hear Yusuf/Cat Stevens, The Beatles, Hoyt Axton, Neil Young, The Rascals, Joan Baez, Waylon Jennings, James Taylor, Gram Parsons, Simon & Garfunkel, Taj Mahal, Harry Chapin, Linda Ronstadt, Dan Fogelberg, Three Dog Night, Ry Cooder, Tim Buckley, Muddy Waters, Jonathan Edwards, Bob Dylan, Badfinger, Townes Van Zandt, Chris Hillman and more!

In the course of a decade, particularly the sixties, not every group is a groundbreaking group. Some bands just make great music and chart hits. That was The Turtles. They formed in L.A. in 1965 and by the end of the decade they were tearing up the charts. Today we put them In the Spotlight!

8:00 p.m. Eric Clapton Live at Event Halle, Basel, Switzerland, November 13 & 14, 2013

We close with Eric Clapton and his band live at The Baloise Sessions music festival in Switzerland.

Mondays do not have to be bad. We’re here to help get you through with great music 24/7 at absolutely no cost to you and with no commercial interruption. The button is below.

Today It’s Bob Dylan, Our House EP, and Some Hidden Gems From Emmylou Harris on Sunday, September 1, 2024

Good morning, music lovers! We break into a new month and season with some great stuff from Bob Dylan and Emmylou Harris, along with our House EP!

Here is your Sunday Funday lineup:

10:00 a.m. Bob Dylan: The Love Songs

Bob Dylan didn’t just write about social justice issues. He wrote some of the most amazing love songs on the planet, and we start the day there.

2:00 p.m. The #BecomeUngovernable House Playlist: Various Artists

This afternoon for five hours we’ve got the music that inspired the station from Barry McGuire, Edwin Starr, The Temptations, Peter Tosh, The Beatles, T. Rex, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, Country Joe & The Fish, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Joan Baez, CSNY, Pink Floyd, The Animals, Ten Years After, Plastic Ono Band, Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, Three Dog Night, Jimmy Cliff, Richie Havens, Marvin Gaye, The Association, Phil Ochs and more!

9:00 p.m. Emmylou Harris: Rare Tracks & Forgotten Gems

This is a short, but oh so sweet playlist of some of the things you may not know Emmylou Harris recorded, and some that have fallen through the cracks.

We’re on 24/7 uninterrupted by commercials or endless DJ chatter. We’re all about the music. See for yourself. The button is below!

Friday Delivers The Drifters, Songs About Food and Our ‘Ode To Morning’ EP at Night. No kidding. August 23, 2024

Good morning, music lovers (and foodies also). We’ve got a great lineup on the cusp of the weekend, including a brand new Spotlight featuring The Drifters!

Here’s your musical lineup:

Here’s another one off my musical ‘to do’ list. We (luckily) pipe a sixties station in our store and I hear an awful lot of songs by this band every day. I finally got to the point where this simply had to get done. Originally assembled as the back-up band for Clyde McPhatter, The Drifters turned their fortunes into a career that spanned half a century and generated plenty of number ones. Today, they are In the Spotlight.

2:00 p.m. For Foodies Only: Various Artists

Another great multi-artist list (a shorter one) with songs about food from The Rolling Stones, Little Feat, Sam & Dave, Van Morrison, Led Zeppelin, Judy Collins, The Beatles, Steely Dan, Harry Nilsson, Cream, The Guess Who, Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, Bob Dylan, The Kinks, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Eagles, The Flying Burrito Brothers and more!

7:00 p.m. Ode To Morning: Various Artists

We head into the nighttime hours with songs about the morning. Yes. But earlier in the week we opened the morning programming with songs about the night. It’s only fitting. You’ll hear Cat Stevens, Hoyt Axton, The Beatles, Neil Young, The Rascals, Waylon Jennings, Joan Baez, James Taylor, Gram Parsons, Simon & Garfunkel, Taj Mahal, Dan Fogelberg, Linda Ronstadt, Harry Chapin, Three Dog Night, Ry Cooder, Tim Buckley, Muddy Waters, Jonathan Edwards, Bob Dylan and more.

We’re At Midweek With Our ‘House’ EP, the Band Called Love In The Spotlight, and Surf Music! Wednesday, July 3, 2024

Good morning, surfer dudes and dudettes…and everyone in between. We are kicking off summer this week here in The Mermaid Lounge and we’re beginning a Summer of Love celebration tomorrow, so stay tuned!

Here’s your midweek musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. The #BecomeUngovernable House Playlist: Various Artists

This was one of our very first (and small) playlists that grew into our little musical manifesto. You’ll hear Barry McGuire, The Temptations, Edwin Starr, Peter Tosh, T. Rex, The Beatles, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, Country Joe & The Fish, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Joan Baez, CSNY, Pink Floyd, The Animals, Ten Years After, Plastic Ono Band, Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, Three Dog Night, Jimmy Cliff, The Association, Richie Havens, Marvin Gaye, Phil Ochs, Janis Joplin, Tom Rush, Pete Seeger, Nina Simone and more!

Nope. Not music about love. But music from the band named Love, one of the best of the sixties bands that you may not even know. It was Tom Petty who got me started on Love. It was not an intuitive discovery. If you have heard of them, then congratulations! If you haven’t, give a listen.

8:00 p.m. Going To Surf City: Various Artists

Surfer music is a musical genre all its own, and we haven’t spun this one in forever, so it’s time to break it out. You’ll hear The Beach Boys, Dick Dale & His Deltones, The Trashmen, The Challengers, Jan & Dean, The Surfaris, The Chantays, The Blue Stingrays and more! And here we have another connection to Tom Petty. The Blue Stingrays are essentially The Heartbreakers without Tom Petty, playing some of the coolest surfer music on record, and led by one of the best guitarists on the planet, Mike Campbell.

We Welcome June in The Lounge With Our House EP, and Live Music From Mark Knopfler & Emmylou Harris and George Harrison, Saturday, June 1, 2024

Good morning, music lovers. We kick off the month of June with our House EP and two sets of great live music.

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. The #BecomeUngovernable House EP: Various Artists

This is one of the first EP’s we ever put together. You’ll hear Barry McGuire, The Temptations, Edwin Starr, Peter Tosh, The Beatles, T. Rex, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, Country Joe & The Fish, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Joan Baez, CSNY, Pink Floyd, The Animals, Ten Years After, Plastic Ono Band, Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, Three Dog Night, Jimmy Cliff, Richie Havens, Marvin Gaye, The Association, Phil Ochs, Tom Rush, Pete Seeger, The Band, Nina Simone, Janis Joplin, Linda Ronstadt and more!
