It’s Saturday and We Give You Tom Petty Trifectas All Day, Celebrate John Lennon’s Birthday, and It Doesn’t Stop There on October 9, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We’ve got our usual full Saturday of great stuff for you today. We continue on with Tom Petty Month and celebrate what would have been Lennon’s 81st birthday. But there’s still more!

Here’s today’s line-up:

All Day Tom Petty Trifectas, All Day Long NEW!

We have a recurring Tom Petty theme today, which means opening every hour of music (except for programmed times) with a Tom Petty trifecta. You’ll hear music from The Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch, and The Traveling Wilburys. You’ll also hear solo material.

11:00 a.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of John Lennon

We celebrate what would have been John Lennon’s 81st birthday today by putting him In the Spotlight as a member of The Beatles, The Plastic Ono Band, and as a solo artist.

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Just A Stones Throw Away by Valerie Carter FINAL AIRING!

We bid a fond farewell to this week’s featured album by Valerie Carter. Tomorrow when you roll out of bed, there will be a new selection.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live From Tivoli Concert Hall, Copenhagen, Denmark, April 14, 1972

This is a rare repeat airing, but the last time we aired this was way back at the inception of LIVE DEAD in 2019. Tonight we revisit the Europe ’72 tour live from Copenhagen.

Saturday is always a treat here in The Mermaid Lounge! It’s a great day to join your friends from around the globe. Today, we have listeners from the Russian Federation, Denmark, Switzerland, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, the Faroe Islands, Canada, and points beyond.

The Heartbreakers Are Back, Steve Winwood is In The Spotlight, and Valerie Carter Sings Our Album of The Week, Thursday, October 7, 2021

Good Morning, Petty Lovers! We’re back celebrating Tom Petty’s life today with a really excellent outing from the 30th Anniversary Tour in 2006.

Tom Petty performs at The Heartbreakers’ 30th Anniversary Concert in Gainesville, September 21, 2006

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Stephen C. O’Connell Center, Gainesville, Florida, September 21, 2006

This was a great outing all around as The Heartbreakers played their hometown on the 30th Anniversary Tour, replete with a visit from Stevie Nicks. We know you’ll enjoy this one.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Just A Stones Throw Away by Valerie Carter

Sadly, we’re winding down on this week’s selection. This is our second to last airing, with the final being sometime on Saturday. Get it while you can. This is a great album, and Valerie Carter is a great singer-songwriter.

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Steve Winwood

Steve Winwood has given us so much great music over the years. This Spotlight feature covers his time with The Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith, Traffic, and his solo career. You’ll hear a song titled Valerie in this set which is, oddly enough, said to be about the late, great Valerie Carter (see above). I saw him live at Great Woods (not when it was The Tweeter Center or The Comcast Center), and it was one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen.

Join us today and celebrate Tom Petty Month with us. You won’t regret it. This is just one of the live performances you’ll hear this month, and it is one of the best shows The Heartbreakers have ever done.

The Heartbreakers Live at The Fillmore, The Final Airing of Our AOW, and LIVE DEAD Later Tonight, Saturday, October 2, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! Tom Petty Month gets underway in a serious manner today with music from their legendary residency at the Fillmore West in 1997.

The poster series for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Fillmore

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, January 10-February 7, 1997

This is just over three hours of music recorded during The Heartbreakers’ legendary residency at The Fillmore West back in 1997. It is testament to the fact that this band is undoubtedly one of the greatest bands ever to step onto a stage and engage with an audience. I can honestly say that I’ve never seen better, and I’ve seen a hell of a lot of live performances in my lifetime.

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: The Traveling Wilburys, Volume One FINAL AIRING

We bid a fond farewell to Volume One of the Traveling Wilburys two great albums. We’ll have the other sometime during Tom Petty Month for sure.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at Cotterell Court, Colgate University, Hamilton, NY, November 4, 1977 NEW!

Yet another great live performance from the music world’s untiring, insatiable jam band who made college stops a staple during their lifetime. No matter what anyone tells you, The Dead ain’t The Dead without Jerry Garcia.

Before, in between, and after our programming we’ll give you our standard rotation of 27,000+ songs in Open Stream, without commercial interruption and without the chatty DJ’s. We’re free too, and that makes it even better.

We Kick Off Tom Petty Month Today and Give You Some ‘Travelin’ Fever’ Action, Friday, October 1, 2021

Good Morning, Pettyologists! It’s Rocktober, and that makes it Tom Petty Month. Now, we are not out to compete with any other music outlet by any stretch. But you’ll be seeing a bit more of The Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch, and The Traveling Wilburys than usual this month. And that’s a good thing.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Travelin’ Fever: Various Artists

We kick off the day with our Travelin’ Fever EP. You’ll hear Little Feat, Linda Ronstadt, Asleep At The Wheel, Willie Nelson, Janis Joplin, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Band, Neil Young, Sheryl Crow, Loggins & Messina, Jesse Winchester, Fats Domino, Del Shannon, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Joan Baez, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jerry Jeff Walker, Ray Charles, Guy Clark, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and many more!

7:00 p.m. Not The Album of The Week: Hypnotic Eye by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

We kick off Tom Petty month with Hypnotic Eye, the final studio album by The Heartbreakers released in 2014. It is not our album of the week because it has already been our album of the week. The reason we kick off with this album is it’s hard for a band to be this good nearly forty years on. In my mind, this album competes with Damn The Torpedos as The Heartbreakers’ best album. And The Heartbreakers were still packing them in. On the Hypnotic Eye tour, they played to 40,000 people in Boston’s historic Fenway Park.

Today’s the day, folks. We kick off Tom Petty month. Our photo today is not meant to be morbid. We celebrate Tom Petty’s life and contribution to music, both of which were huge. We merely wanted to show the outpouring of fan love that Tom Petty earned over his gigantic career. He is still missed, but his music lives on.

Good Morning, Music Lovers! For most of us it’s the week’s end…but I’ve got one more day. But it matters not, people. The music is great today. You’ll see what I mean.

The Traveling Wilburys remain the greatest supergroup of all time for us, but these guys are right behind them.

The Traveling Wilburys reign supreme as the best supergroup of all time. But these guys were right behind them. Yes, they should be called Crosby, Stills, Nash & (Sometimes) Young, but we think they were at their best with Young in the fold.

We Spend Thursday With Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Gram Parsons, and Maria Muldaur, September 23, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’re getting closer to the weekend now, and that’s a good thing. We’ve got some great stuff to help you get through your Thursday.

Maria Muldaur began her career in the Greenwich Village coffee houses as part of the great American folk music revival of the early sixties.
Chester Simpson Photography Collection

Here’s today’s programming:

11:00 a.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Petty Theft, The Covers

The same qualities that make The Heartbreakers such a great original rock n’ roll band also make them a great cover band. According to Mike Campbell, the songs that they cover come from the artists who are part of their overall musical DNA. We think it shows. This is a great set. Enjoy.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Grievous Angel by Gram Parsons

We’re winding down on this week’s album selection. This is our second-to-last airing of Grievous Angel before we move on to another album on Sunday.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Maria Muldaur

Maria Muldaur is a woman of many musical styles, including folk, jazz, and blues. She began her career in the coffee houses of Greenwich Village during the great American folk music revival of the sixties, and has forged a six-decade career. Today we put her music in the spotlight, where it belongs.

We’re out here playing music 24/7 for you for free. There is no “subscription” required. No credit card needed. No personal information asked. All you need to do is pull up a tab and click the link below:

11:00 a.m. Repeat After Me, Volume One: Various Artists

We bring back the first volume which we played for the first time on September 4. To repeat, this series of playlists gives you the original song plus a reboot by a different artist. Some of the people you’ll hear singing the same songs are The Rolling Stones & Otis Redding, Barrett Strong & The Beatles, Martha and The Vandellas & Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne & Gregg Allman…you get the idea.

The set list for this one is in the blog under Playlists. Just scroll to the bottom.

Afternoon On-The-Hour Trifectas NEW!

Monday Brings Some Great Heartbreakers Sandwiched Between Linda Ronstadt and Eva Cassidy, September 20, 2021

It’s Monday again here in The Mermaid Lounge and I’m pleased that I’m off from retail servitude so that I get to listen to what we’ve got lined up for you today. We call it the Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Sandwich.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Linda Ronstadt: The Stone Poneys & The Early Years

A collection of great early Ronstadt work with the Stone Poneys and from her early albums like Silk Purse and Hand Sown, Home Grown. All the music that’s fit to hear before she blew the doors off the music world with Heart Like A Wheel.

3:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at the Vic Theatre, Chicago, April 19, 2003

One of my all-time favorite Heartbreaker performances here from a great venue. I could go off here and extol the virtues of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and what they contributed to music, but I don’t need to do that. All you need to do is LISTEN.

7:00 p.m. Eva Cassidy Recorded Live at Blues Alley, Georgetown, January 2-3, 1996

When I mention Eva Cassidy to people, they look at me perplexed. Many haven’t heard of her, and that’s because she was just coming into her own when she died of cancer at the age of 33. For those of you who don’t know Eva Cassidy and her music, she was a singer, guitarist and pianist who used her beautiful soprano voice to interpret jazz, folk, country and blues songs.

Great day to tune us in. We’ve got a great collection of programming today. And before, in between and after we’ve got all that wide Open Stream that runs 24/7. For free. No strings.
