Good Morning, Music Lovers! We have another light programming day on tap. But what we have to offer is pretty potent, including our House playlist.

This is an occasional feature here in The Mermaid Lounge. Today we celebrate the 40th anniversary of Hard Promises, released on May 5, 1981. It’s hard to imagine an album this good coming right on the heels of The Heartbreakers’ breakout album, Damn The Torpedoes! (last week’s Album of The Week, by the way), but it did.

It’s true that The Waiting was the anchor of Hard Promises, but there’s also A Woman In Love (It’s Not Me), Nightwatchman, A Thing About You, Something Big, Insider (featuring Stevie Nicks), and one of my favorite Heartbreaker songs of all time, Kings Road.

This is nearly three hours of the music that originally inspired me to start this crazy endeavor to begin with. It is due for an upgrade soon, but it’s still one of the best playlists we feature with Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Animals, The Byrds, The Who, The Chambers Brothers, The Temptations, John Lennon, T. This is our first repeat performance, and we thought it was only fitting to choose this one for May Day airing. Next week, we’ll resume new material.

We chose Hypnotic Eye as our first Heartbreakers’ album to be the Album of the Week back a couple of years ago. However, Damn The Torpedoes is second to none. There is no question that this put the band on the map, and there is absolutely no question that this album is an absolute classic in popular music. It kicked off a long and wonderfully amazing 40-year run from one of our house bands (The Beatles being the other).

3:00 p.m. Folk Music From A-To-Z: Various Artists

We are back with another of our long-players today, an uninterrupted homage to our folk music roots with Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Woody Guthrie, Peter, Paul & Mary, Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, John Prine, Tom Rush, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Joan Baez, Bonnie Raitt, John Hartford, Eric Andersen, Cat Stevens, Harry Chapin, Linda Ronstadt, The Carter Family and many, many more.

Boston had some great little music venues back in the day, and The Unicorn was one of them. In the spring of ’66, it played host to one great blues band.

3:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Sing The Blues

Speaking of da blues, Tom Petty once said he imagined his band getting old together, sitting in chairs, and singing the blues. Sadly, that day is gone now, but the Heartbreakers did a great job on the blues. Their Mojo album was a tribute to the blues. Today, we show you why Petty’s scenario would have been a great way to grow old.

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Medicine At Midnight by Foo Fighters

The second airing of Medicine At Midnight happens this evening. The album was delayed by COVID-19, but was worth the wait. The Foos are one of the very few “today” bands that get airplay here.

Good Morning, Musicologists! How are you all this fine morning. It’s a bit bleak here in the Boston area today. We’re forecasted for heavy rains. We’ll see if it actually happens. Sometimes the weather is spot on, sometimes not.

Woody Guthrie, Eric Andersen, Joni Mitchell and more will grace our airwaves starting at 3:00 p.m. today.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Love Stinks by The J. Geils Band NEW!

The J. Geils Band is a Boston favorite, and this one has been a long time coming. I know it’s sacrilege in these parts, but I prefer the music of the J. Geils Band to Aerosmith any day of the week. Just a personal observation. The band was formed back in 1967 in Worcester, Massachusetts under the leadership of guitarist John “J” Geils, and featured one Peter Wolf on vocals. This is my favorite J. Geils album.

3:00 p.m. Folk Music From A to Z: Various Artists EXPANDED & UPDATED!

We’ve elevated this playlist up to the level of our Sixties, Girls Day Out, and British playlists, with nearly five hours of old, traditional, and newer artists contributing. You’ll hear Woody Guthrie, Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Linda Ronstadt & The Stone Poneys, Bonnie Raitt, John Prine, Tom Rush, Jackson Browne, Odetta, Leadbelly, Janis Ian, Tim Hardin, Jesse Winchester, and many others! We are still adding to our folk artist collection, so there will be another update down the road.

Tom Petty and his bandmates once said that they learned the art of improvisation on stage from going on tour with Bob Dylan. He taught them well because they were one of the best damned live bands I’ve ever seen. Bob Dylan is a master craftsman in so many ways.

We haven’t aired this one for a while, so it’s time has come around once again. You will hear songs from Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Dusty Springfield, J.J. I remember when Tom Petty took the time to come out on stage before Lucinda Williams opened for The Heartbreakers and told the audience that they really needed to pay attention to her. They did. If by some stroke of ill fortune you haven’t paid attention to Lucinda, this is your time.

7:00 p.m. Traffic Live at The Capitol Theatre, Port Chester, New York, June 26, 1970

Traffic was formed in Birmingham, England, in April of 1967 by Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, Chris Wood and Dave Mason. The band began as a psychedelic rock group, but diversified their sound by adding various instruments, including the Mellotron, the harpsichord and the sitar. They disbanded in 1969, bur reunited in 1970 to release their album John Barleycorn Must Die, and for this tour. Steve Winwood is another favorite here in The Mermaid Lounge.

Bob Dylan & Johnny Cash Record Together, “Timeless” Debuts as Our Album of The Week, and ‘What’s In A Name’ Playlist Later, Sunday, February 28, 2021

We are off to a late start today, Music Lovers, but the music is still great in spite of all that. We have a brand new album of the week, epic Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash, and a great playlist later this evening.

Bob Dylan & Johnny Cash got together to record during breaks in the sessions for Dylan’s “Nashville Skyline” album.

1:00 p.m. Bob Dylan & Johnny Cash, Nashville 1969

While Bob Dylan was in Nashville recording his Nashville Skyline album, he and Johnny Cash decided to get together to record some music. Only one of those songs made it to Nashville Skyline. It was Girl From The North Country. The others were released much later. We have those recordings here for you today.

5:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Timeless, An All-Star Tribute to Hank Williams NEW!

This is one sweet album of all-stars paying their respects to a counry legend, Hank Williams, Sr. There are a number of memorable performances here, especially from Lucinda Williams and Emmylou Harris. However, the one that stands out for me is Tom Petty’s version of You’re Gonna’ Change (Or I’m A Gonna’ Leave). Listen for it. Other contributors include Mark Knopfler, Shery Crow, Bob Dylan, Hank Williams III, and Johnny Cash.

8:00 p.m. Deb’s Stream: What’s In A Name? Various Artists

We haven’t heard this one for a while, and it’s a good one. Songs with people’s names in them, either in the title or the lyrics.
