Saturday in The Lounge Brings Our ‘Ode To Morning’ EP, The Final Airing of the AOW, and Tom Rush as Our Featured Singer-Songwriter for the Week, March 11, 2023

Good morning, music lovers! Our worldwide listeners are on and we’ve got a great programming lineup for you today, starting with our tribute to morning!

Here’s your Saturday lineup:

9:00 a.m. Ode To Morning: Various Artists

We’ve already paid homage to the night this month, so it’s time to do so for the morning with artists like Neil Young, Cat Stevens, Hoyt Axton, The Beatles, The Rascals, Waylon Jennings, Gram Parsons, Joan Baez, James Taylor, Simon & Garfunkel, Ta Mahal, Dan Fogelberg, Harry Chapin, Three Dog Night, Ry Cooder, Tim Buckley, Muddy Waters, Linda Ronstadt, Jonathan Edwards, Townes Van Zandt, Pure Prairie League, Bob Dylan, Chris Hillman, Badfinger, Joni Mitchell, Fleetwood Mac, The Move, Foreigner, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Nina Simone and more!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Bluesiana Triangle by Bluesiana Triangle FINAL AIRING!

The final airing is upon us. This great album by Art Blakey, Dr. John and David “Fathead” Newman will be gone after this airing. Tomorrow we’ll have a new selection for you.

8:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Tom Rush NEW!

Tom Rush is credited with ushering in the singer-songwriter era. Not only is he a songwriter himself, but he helped put several others on the map by singing their songs, most notably Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne and James Taylor. Tom Rush has been at it for over sixty years. Today he is 82 and still active. I have fond memories of spending his 79th birthday with him at a concert in a church in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, his hometown. Tom Rush is a folk, blues, and New England legend. My favorite song by Tom? Kids These Days.

It’s Saturday and that’s always a good day to spend in The Mermaid Lounge. We kick it off early today at 9:00 a.m., so remember to just push the button below as we kick off your morning with songs about morning.

We’re Keeping It Simple With Our ‘Water, Water Everywhere’ EP and the Final Airing of Kate & Anna McGarrigle as Our Singer-Songwriters, Friday, February 24, 2023

Good morning, music lovers! We’re finally at the end of the week. For some reason it seemed far too long a trip. But we’ve got some great programming and a whole lot of wide Open Stream with The Music Mermaid today.

Here’s today’s musical landscape:

12:00 p.m. Water, Water Everywhere: Various Artists

Scientific fact: The earth is composed of 71% water. Musical fact: A hell of a lot of songs have been made about water. Today you’ll hear Paul McCartney, Deep Purple, Joe Cocker, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, Otis Redding, Neil Young, Elton John, The Doobie Brothers, Valerie Carter, Bob Dylan, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Al Green, Loggins & Messina, Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, Linda Ronstadt, Spirit, The Grass Roots, The Beach Boys, Lindisfarne, Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt, Carole King, Steely Dan, Tom Rush, Donovan, America, Johnny Rivers and more!

7:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Kate & Anna McGarrigle Final Airing!

Today is the final airing of Kate and Anna McGarrigle as our featured singer-songwriters, two masterful musical women who set out on a great musical journey with those who found their talents early on, like Linda Ronstadt, Maria Muldaur and Emmylou Harris. We here in The Mermaid Lounge have enjoyed hearing them sing their own tunes.

It’s Friday and we’ve finally made it to the end of the work week. The weekend is just around the corner and we’re gearing up for it. Why not start it off early by putting us on today? We’re on 24/7, we’re totally free, and we circulate nearly 30,000 songs continually.

We Ease You Into the Work Week With Our ‘On The Map’ Playlist, The I-Threes In the Spotlight, and Some Live Blind Faith Later This Evening, Monday, January 30, 2023

Happy Monday, kids! It’s the beginning of another work week and we’ve got just what you need to get rid of those Monday blues as we give you ‘On the Map’ along with The I-Threes In the Spotlight and live Blind Faith later.

Here’s your Monday, Monday lineup:

11:00 a.m. On The Map: Various Artists

We start our programming with a playlist about places across the globe, from Boston to Timbuktu, with The Beatles, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, America, Little Feat, Joni Mitchell, The Beach Boys, Paul Simon, The Lovin’ Spoonful, The Doors, The Association, Scott McKenzie, Fats Domino, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Jesse Winchester, Tom Rush, James Taylor and more!

3:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of the I-Threes

As I’m learning, many people don’t know who the I-Threes are. They are Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt, and Marcia Griffiths and they are the most influential female band in Reggae and Ska who provided the background voices for Bob Marley & The Wailers. They also recorded albums individually, so today, we enlighten those who have never before heard them sing. It’s a treat.

7:00 p.m. Blind Faith Live at The Earl Warren Showgrounds, Santa Barbara, CA, August 16, 1969

Blind Faith were an English supergroup featuring Steve WinwoodEric ClaptonGinger Baker, and Ric Grech. They weren’t around for very long, only for one album and one extended summer tour. We’ve got one of those performances from that tour for you today. (I’m sure that the Earl Warren Showgrounds were used for more than music, but the thought of a psychedelic rock band performing at a venue named after a Supreme Court judge makes me chuckle.)

We’re here no matter how damned tired we are because we have The Music Mermaid and she is large and in charge. We’re on 24/7 (not just when we have programming) totally free to the listening public. You don’t need a subscription. You don’t need a credit card, and we don’t even want to know your name. We just want you to listen.

Today We’ve Got Our House EP, Smokey Robinson &The Miracles’ Album of The Week, and John Lennon In the Spotlight, Thursday, January 26, 2023

Good morning, music lovers! Today we’ve got another day of great music as our early-morning EP gives you the music that inspired us to start this radio station. This afternoon it’s our Album of the Week and tonight Lennon is In the Spotlight!

Here’s today’s musical landscape:

9:00 a.m. The #BecomeUngovernable House Playlist: Various Artists

The music that inspired the radio station is back for another turn. You’ll hear Barry McGuire, The Temptations, Edwin Starr, Peter Tosh, The Beatles, Genesis, T-Rex, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, Country Joe & The Fish, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Joan Baez, CSNY, Pink Floyd, The Animals, Ten Years After, The Plastic Ono Band, George Harrison, Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, Three Dog Night, Jimmy Cliff, Richie Havens, Marvin Gaye, The Association, Phil Ochs, Tom Rush, Pete Seeger, The Band, Nina Simone and more!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Going To A Go-Go by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles

Smokey Robinson and his crew get another turn with their Album of The Week, a gem that carries four of the band’s Top 20 hits.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of John Lennon

John Lennon was the co-founder, co-lead singer, co-songwriter and spiritual leader of the most influential rock band of all time, The Beatles. They changed everything. He also created the Plastic Ono Band and had a successful solo career in his post-Beatles life. Tonight we put him In the Spotlight.

We are definitely on the downslide to the weekend, folks. Just a couple of days away now. Why not tune us in? The time is right. We’re on 24/7 (not just when we have programming) streaming the greatest music on the planet. And we’re totally commercia-free and free of charge to you. What’s not to love?

Happy Holidays From The Mermaid Lounge! Today We Bring Leon Russell With Our New AOW and the ‘Water, Water Everywhere’ EP, Sunday, December 25, 2022

Good morning and Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas, whatever you choose. We are here in The Mermaid Lounge where all we have to offer is non-stop music at no charge to you on a 24/7 rotation. And I’m happy to report we do not play Christmas music.

Here’s today’s holiday lineup:

10:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Carney by Leon Russell

I have long been a fan of Leon Russell. He’s one of my favorite singer-songwriters. I also remember the first time I heard Carney and thinking that this would be the album where others would recognize just how great he truly was. Carney is Russell’s third studio album, released in 1972. It gave him his first hit single in Tight Rope (backed by Masquerade). The album is a split between straightforward roots rock and a bit of psychedelia. The music critics hate that shit, but his fans didn’t. That’s what mattered. The album peaked at No. 2 on Billboard.

1:00 p.m. Water, Water Everywhere: Various Artists

Water is absolutely essential to the perpetuation of life on the planet, and it is a popular subject in the music world, as you will see. You’ll hear songs by Paul McCartney, Deep Purple, Joe Cocker, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Otis Redding, Neil Young, Elton John, The Doobie Brothers, Valerie Carter, Bob Dylan, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Al Green, Loggins & Messina, Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, Linda Ronstadt, Spirit, The Grass Roots, The Beach Boys. Lindisfarne, Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt, Carole King, Steely Dan, Tom Rush, Donovan, America, Johnny Rivers and more!

Yes, it’s a day to be with friends and family. I’ll be doing the same in a while. But in the meantime we’ve got your music here. And it’ll be here when you’re done reveling. We continue on.

And Boom. It’s Monday. We’ve Got ‘Live’ Kinks, Our ‘Money Honey’ Playlist, and Carole King. And Plenty of Open Stream, December 5, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists. (And haters of Monday mornings.) We cannot flirt with time and make this another day, but we can help you get through this one with some good music.

Here’s today’s musical mashup:

11:00 a.m. The Kinks Live at The Hippodrome Theatre, London, UK, July 14, 1974 NEW!

This is a brand new one to us here in The Mermaid Lounge. As I said, we shop on a bunch of venues (of which Amazon and Apple are not part) and we have access to some cool stuff once in a while. This will be an experience we have together as we’ve not had the time to preview this one.

3:00 p.m. Money, Honey: Various Artists

This one could easily become an EP. Along with love and heartache, money and wealth are popular topics for the rockers. But we try to resist making every single topic an EP and will probably settle for a volume two so we can spread the wealth. At any rate, you will hear Elvis Presley, the Guess Who, The Beatles, Warren Zevon, Monty Python (yes, that Monty Python), Tom Petty, Tom Waits, The Byrds, Slim Harpo, Rosanne Cash, Albert King, Tom Rush, The Wallflowers, Allen Toussaint, Chuck Berry, Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, Laura Nyro and more!

7:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Carole King

This is our second airing of this week’s featured Singer-Songwriter, and a brilliant one at that. We will have one more airing of this later in the week. Time TBD.

We begin yet another work week as we mosey through the month of December and head for a new year. But we still have the (ugh) holidays to get through. I suppose if I didn’t work in retail, I may feel differently about them. But I digress. Did I mention that we’re totally free of charge? That’s one thing you won’t have to worry about. Paying for your music. We realize we have limitations compared to Spotify and others, but this is radio, and radio is where you don’t exactly know what song is coming next. Reminds me of my youth laying in the driveway with my friends listening to my old transistor. Good times.

We’re at Midweek With Our Multi-Artist ‘Folk Music From A-to-Z’ EP and Chuck Berry In The Spotlight, Wednesday, October 19, 2022

We hit our midweek stride with a great EP focused on folk music and folk-rock. We play both the great pure folk artists (like Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan), along with those who pay homage to the musical genre (like The Beatles and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers). Later, we put Chuck Berry front and center.

Here’s your midweek lineup:

10:00 a.m. Folk Music From A-to-Z: Various Artists

We’ve got them all here in this playlist. You’ll hear John Prine, Dave Van Ronk, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul & Mary, Odetta, Cat Stevens, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Beatles, Arlo Guthrie, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, The Band, Eric Andersen, Tom Rush, Judy Collins, Nanci Griffith, Jesse Winchester, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Lead Belly, Tim Hardin, The Kingston Trio, Simon & Garfunkel, Richie Havens, Jackson Browne, Guy Clark, James Taylor, The Carter Family, Harry Chapin, Linda Ronstadt, Phil Ochs, Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt and more!

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Chuck Berry NEW!

Tonight we put a rock n’ roll pioneer, one of its Founding Fathers, In the Spotlight as we celebrate his birthday (belatedly, it was October 18). John Lennon once said this about Chuck Berry, “If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it ‘Chuck Berry.'” Indeed.

Before, in between, and after we’ve got that great wide Open Stream all day and all night long, because we run 24/7, not just when we have programming. You are in the hands of The Music Mermaid who, as you well know, has impeccable taste in music.

We Close Out Both The Month and Week in Style With Our ‘M is For Motown’ EP and Tom Rush In the Spotlight, Friday, September 30, 2022

Good Morning, Motown Music Lovers! We’ve got your playlist for you today starting at 11:00 a.m. EST, and we close out the programming later with Tom Rush.

Here’s your musical landscape:

11:00 a.m. M is For Motown: Various Artists

We have two soul/R & B playlists, one that encompasses all record labels and this one, which features the Motown sound. You’ll hear Barrett Strong, Eddie Kendricks, Eddie Holland, Edwin Starr, Gladys Knight & The Pips, The Jackson Five, Kim Weston, Jr. Walker & The All Stars, Marvin Gaye, Martha & The Vandellas, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Four Tops, The Isley Brothers, The Temptations, The Contours, Mary Wells, Rare Earth, Tammi Terrell, Diana Ross & The Supremes, The Marvelettes, The Spinners, Jimmy Ruffin and more!

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Tom Rush

We bring back the Pride of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. I saw this guy in Portsmouth at his 79th birthday bash just before COVID-19 hit hard. This was the last time I’ve been in a concert venue, and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. I eventually lost the friend I saw the show with to COVID. I made this selection with her in mind today.

Before, in between, and after it’s our great wide Open Stream at the discretion of the Music Mermaid, who patrols the studio area with great pride. We run music on a 24/7 basis with no commercial interruption and no chatty DJ’s who just love to hear themselves speak. Oh, yeah, did I mention that we are completely free of charge?

A Busy Saturday Brings Our ‘Water, Water Everywhere’ EP, Our AOW, Springsteen In the Spotlight, and LIVE DEAD!, September 24, 2022

We are busy as beavers here in The Mermaid Lounge as we give you our traditional “busiest” day of programming, including a belated birthday celebration for The Boss.

Yep, the planet earth is composed of 71% water; so is our programming today!

Here’s your Saturday musical landscape:

9:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Sunshine Superman by Donovan FINAL AIRING!

We’re on the final airing of this great psychedelic effort, but we have a brand new one on tap for introduction tomorrow. Get this one in while you can! It was Donovan’s most psychedelic album.

12:00 p.m. Water, Water Everywhere: Various Artists

Water, like music, is a life essential. You’ll hear odes to water from Paul McCartney, Deep Purple, Joe Cocker, Simon & Garfunkel, Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Otis Redding, Neil Young, Elton John, The Doobie Brothers, Valerie Carter, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Al Green, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Loggins & Messina, Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, Linda Ronstadt, Spirit, The Grass Roots, The Beach Boys, Lindisfarne, Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt, Carole King, Steely Dan, Tom Rush, Johnny Rivers, America, Donovan and more!

7:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Bruce Springsteen NEW!

Finally, Springsteen gets his Spotlight feature and we’re happy to wish The Boss a belated (only one day) 73rd birthday with this one. Give a listen to the guy who was a major pioneer in the ‘heartland rock’ genre.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The DuPont Gymnasium, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, May 7, 1970

Another repeat, but it was last aired in early 2020, so it’s like new. As is every performance by the world’s preeminent jam band. We’re working on new material going forward, but this is a great soundboard recording.

Saturday is a busy day her, but we’d like to remind you that wide Open Stream is still the majority of our daily fare from The Mermaid Lounge. All of our EP’s are multi-artist as well. The Music Mermaid does an impeccable job of keeping us in line here. Come on in and see for yourself!

It’s Saturday with a Happy 80th McCartney Celebration, the Final Airing of Our AOW, Our ‘Folk Music From A-To-Z’ EP and LIVE DEAD! Later, on June 18, 2022

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We’ve got a great lineup for you today and it’s a bit busier here in The Lounge than usual because we’ve got McCartney’s 80th birthday celebration later on.

Happy 80th Birthday to Sir Paul McCartney!

Here’s today’s musical journey:

10:00 a.m. Folk Music From A-To-Z: Various Artists

We begin the programming day with this great extended playlist that includes tunes from John Prine, Dave Van Ronk, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Peter, Paul & Mary, Odetta, Cat Stevens, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Beatles, Arlo Guthrie, Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, The Band, Eric Andersen, Tom Rush, Judy Collins, Nanci Griffith, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Lead Belly, Tim Hardin, The Kingston Trio, Simon & Garfunkel, Richie Havens, Jackson Browne, Guy Clark, James Taylor, The Carter Family, Jesse Winchester, Joni Mitchell, The Stone Poneys, Phil Ochs, Linda Ronstadt, Harry Chapin and more!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: American Tune by Eva Cassidy FINAL AIRING!

Today we bid a fond farewell to this week’s Album of The Week by the late, great Eva Cassidy who, unfortunately, didn’t live long enough to see her success. Don’t miss this collection of rehearsal tunes and live performances.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Paul McCartney

Today we say happy 80th birthday to a true musical living legend who’s still rocking away on his ‘Got Back’ tour. We’ve got Beatles’ stuff, solo performances, his stint with Wings…it’s all here for a couple of hours tonight.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at Summer Jam, Watkins Glen, New York, July 28, 1973

Tonight’s LIVE DEAD! is a rare repeat, but it hasn’t been aired since 2020, so it should sound just like new to those of you who aren’t Deadheads (and they don’t care how many times they hear a Grateful Dead show; it’s all new to them).

We’re chock full of stuff today and we think you’ll like it. There’s no better way to kick start your weekend than with the little radio station that could. (I think I like that.) There are, of course, some things we just can’t do, like play rap and screaming heavy metal death, charge for listening, or play commercial advertising. But we’re pretty damned good with everything else.
