Good morning, bluesologists! Today we’ve got an Open Stream day with blues trifectas to kick off each hour from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and The Bluesbreakers live from the BBC this evening. In between, it’s our AOW.

Here’s your bluesday lineup:

9:00 a.m. Blues Trifectas on The Hour!

Until 3:00 p.m. this afternoon. You’ll hear from Koko Taylor, B.B. King, Slim Harpo, Caned Heat, John Lee Hooker, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Janis Joplin, in that order. We’ll repeat later to take you into the wee hours of the morning.

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Karla Bonoff by Karla Bonoff

This is the second airing of our Album of The Week by singer-songwriter Karla Bonoff.

7:00 p.m. John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers Live at the BBC, London (1965-1967)

This evening we’ve got a collection of live recordings from 1965 through 1967 of John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers performing live at BBC studios. Mayall has rightfully earned the title of “Godfather of the British Blues” and has been influential for six decades. He has retired from the road now, but is still alive and kicking at 89.

Tuesday Bluesday is always a great day to tune us in, but we want you to know that we don’t play the blues only on Tuesdays. It’s part of our standard rotation and is part of our DNA. We’re on 24/7, we’re totally free, and uninterrupted by commercial advertising. Every day.

It’s Tuesday Bluesday and We’ve Got Open Stream This Morning With Blues Trifectas at the Top of Each Hour, Our AOW and Taj Mahal In The Spotlight, January 31, 2023

Good morning, bluesologists! We close the month with an Open Stream Tuesday Bluesday with blues artists featured at the top of each hour starting at 9:00 a.m. Later, we’ve got our Album of The Week and Taj Mahal bringing up the rear this evening.

Here’s your Tuesday Bluesday lineup:

9:00 a.m. Open Stream with Blues Trifectas!

From 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. we give you blues at the top of each hour with the following artists (in order of their appearance): Koko Taylor, B. B. King, Canned Heat, John Lee Hooker, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Janis Joplin!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Mr. Tambourine Man by The Byrds

This is the second airing of our Album of The Week by The Byrds. It’s their studio debut album released in 1965 and it catapulted them into the spotlight of popular music, challenging the British Invasion band’s chart dominance.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal is one of those great blues artists who expanded the genre. He is never afraid to include elements of world music into his blues work. He’s also a brilliant musician, playing guitar, banjo, piano, harmonica and many other instruments. You can learn about the man and his genius by visiting his website. Taj Mahal is now approaching 80 years old and lives in Berkeley, where he reflects on nearly six decades in music.

Tuesday Bluesday is always a great day to tune us in. We’re on 24/7 and we’re totally free of charge. There are no forms to fill out and no subscription requirements. We don’t ask for a credit card or your personal information. We’ve had some wise ass comment that I’m trying to build my hit rate by putting the button down below. That’s only so you can click and go right to the channel. Give me a break.

It’s a Back-To-Work Monday With Bob Dylan and Creedence Clearwater Revival and an Open Stream Afternoon with Trifectas, December 26, 2022

We’re back into the real world of work today, but we’ve got you covered with some great tunes all day long. If you’re still reveling in the season, hell, that’s even better!

Here’s your Monday lineup:

11:00 a.m. Bob Dylan: The Love Songs

Hey, Mr. Dylan wasn’t just about protesting and social justice. He has written a fair amount of pretty amazing love songs. In fact, Maria Muldaur recorded an entire album of Dylan’s love songs back in the seventies, and George Harrison has had a few hits recording Dylan’s love songs. Today, we’ll be airing them for you as sung by the composer.

1:00 p.m. Open Stream Afternoon with Trifectas

We’re giving The Music Mermaid free reign this afternoon with Trifectas through the six o’clock hour. Who knows what she’s going to choose? Dunno. I guess you’ll just have to listen to find out.

7:00 p.m. Creedence Clearwater Revival Live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, July 4, 1971

We close out Monday’s programming with a great live performance from one of the best rock n’ roll bands in music history.

Well, musicologists, we’re on the downslide to a new year. Starting about midweek, we’re taking you on a nostalgic trip to some of the most famous (and infamous) music festivals and multi-artist music shows with a cause in mind as we head toward January 2023. We have lots in store for the brand new year, so stick around.

7:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Robert Johnson NEW!

Robert Johnson only lived to the ripe old age of 27. He is a bona fide member of the 27 Club, and his musical recording career lasted a grand total of seven months. However, his recordings from 1936 and 1937 are historic and expose a combination of songwriting, singing and guitar playing that has influenced generations of blues musicians. Johnson is known as the master of the Delta Blues and one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame describes Robert Johnson as “the first ever rock star.”

Tuesday Bluesday is always a full house, folks, and today is no exception! Join your global friends as we focus on the blues this fine Tuesday. We’re totally free 24/7. There are no surprises. And we don’t employ overly-chatty DJ’s. We’re all about the music.

Monday Brings Two ‘Live’ Gigs, One From Hot Tuna and One From Mudcrutch, Later It’s Open Stream With Trifectas, September 12, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! Monday has reared its head here in The Mermaid Lounge and I’ve got a morning mission of mercy on tap. The Music Mermaid, however, is here to take care of our musical musings for the day.

Here’s your musical landscape today:

12:00 p.m. Hot Tuna Live at Sweetwater, Mill Valley, CA, January 27-28, 1992

It’s been a minute since we’ve heard this one, so step right up and get yourself some live acoustic blues from a great band that knows how to deliver.

4:00 p.m. Mudcrutch Live at The Fonda Theatre, Hollywood, CA, June 26, 2016

Speaking of great bands, we’ve got the tour I deeply regret missing when it pulled into Boston’s House of Blues where the definitive live version of Hungry No More was recorded. I haven’t yet gotten over my short-sightedness on this one. It is a Monday and this is Mudcrutch and, while I’m not declaring it Mudcrutch Monday, it technically is. I felt the need to say that.

After Mudcrutch, it’s wide Open Stream with the Mermaid in charge. I hear she’s got some unannounced Trifectas planned, so I’d better leave it that way. She says you’re just going to have to listen to find out who’s on tap at the top of selected hours. Some of them are new. But my lips are sealed.

It’s Friday and We’ve Got Otis Redding, Trifectas at the Top of Every Hour, and Our ‘Here Comes The Night’ EP Later, September 2, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’ve got a great day lined up today as we feature our first night-time multi-artist EP at the request of some of our late-night listeners!

We feature our first EP at night this evening at the request of some of our late-night global listeners!

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Otis Redding

The world first heard Otis Redding at the Monterey International Pop Festival. It would not be long after that performance that we would lose him. But his musical legacy lives on here in The Mermaid Lounge.

Here’s a great singer-songwriter who doesn’t get enough credit, but we love him here in The Mermaid Lounge. He was great when I saw him in venues like The Saratoga Performing Arts Center in upstate New York, but he’s spectacular in small, intimate settings like The Bijou Cafe. Tune him in.

Winter was groundbreaking in many ways and was recognized as one of the best guitarists in the business. You can learn more about him right here.
