Friday Brings The Big Voice of Valerie Carter, and The Heartbreakers As Cover Band, May 14, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! We’ve got a lot of Open Stream today but we do bring you the wonder that is Valerie Carter, a woman whose career was her own but who also loaned her vocal talents to many others.

I remember the first time I heard Valerie Carter. It was sometime in the seventies when my friends and I were literally traveling around like vagabonds following our favorite bands and singers to every live venue we could get to. I also remember that I wished Valerie Carter would show up at one of them. I eventually did see Valerie perform with Linda Ronstadt at the Orpheum Theatre. The combination of the two of them was like the second coming for me. Let’s never forget that Valerie Carter helped out her fellow musicians with that voice, but that she also had her own voice.

7:00 p.m. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Under The Covers

There’s no denying that The Heartbreakers are one of the greatest rock n’ roll bands in history, and that Tom Petty was one of the greatest songwriters on the planet. They were more than that, however. They were also one of the greatest cover bands ever, and loved to toss in remakes of others’ songs during their live performances in tribute to their favorite performers. We have two of these playlists, but in this one you’ll hear The Heartbreakers cover The Bobby Fuller Four, Bob Dylan, They Byrds, The Clash, J. J. Cale, and many more.

Tune it in because tomorrow it’s gone. The Beatles’ Let It Be the way it was originally intended to be heard was finally released in 2004 under the guidance of Paul McCartney.

We heard the first volume yesterday. We Launch Our ‘Ladies Day Out’ Playlist and ‘Let It Be Naked’ Is Our Album of The Week, Sunday, March 21, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Today, we honor the women of popular music with our brand new Ladies Day Out playlist, giving you exactly 4 hours, 54 minutes, and 55 seconds of music from some of the most amazing female singers of our time.

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Let It Be…Naked by The Beatles NEW!

To be sure, Phil Spector was a musical genius, having developed the ‘wall of sound’ used by so many performers. I like the wall of sound enough, but probably not as much as others, I have to confess. The Beatles were on the outs when they recorded Let It Be, and mostly they were not in the studio together during time. Phil Spector produced this album and, rumor has it, that John Lennon brought him the tapes when he was pissed off. The first release of this album was with the wall of souond. Along came Paul McCartney in 2004, convinced that the original release was not what was originally envisioned for the album. The result is this stripped down version, and I tend to concur with McCartney here.

2:00 p.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists NEW!

Women’s music is nothing new to us, but we’ve never had a long-running women’s playlist until this day. Now, we do. Women continue to get the short end of the stick when it comes to rock music. Hell, that infamous pay-to-play radio conglomerate (whose name we shall not mention) offers quite a few individual stations dedicated to the men of rock, but not one single station dedicated to women. In fact, if you tune in any classic rock station, you almost never hear women played at all. But here, you do.

This playlist features many women. We have Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Cilla Black, Carla Thomas, Ann Peebles, Aretha Franklin, Sheryl Crow, Petula Clark, Nicolette Larson, Wendy Waldman, Phoebe Snow, Norah Jones, and many others. This would be an excellent day to tune us in unless, of course, you’re one of those guys who just can’t bear the thought of women in the musical spotlight for an extended period. This would not be your day.

Tom Rush’s second album for Elektra hit the airwaves in 1966. He’s one of our favorites here in The Mermaid Lounge, a New England original born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. And the man who is credited with starting the era of the singer-songwriter.

3:00 p.m. Nothing But Heartbreak: Various Artists

Not exactly the most uplifting playlist on this Valentines Day, but given my track record, it’s appropriate! You’ll hear heartfelt lament from Dan Fogelberg, Aretha Franklin, Tom Rush, J. Geils Band, Mudcrutch, Elvis Presley, Carole King, Warren Zevon, The Beatles, and more!

7:00 p.m. The All-Girl Revue, Volume 3: Various Artists

We’ve got volume three today. Somehow the women of music always get the short end of the recognition stick. I mentioned this in a Twitter post. First, I can’t believe they’re inducting rappers into what is supposed to be the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. That’s enough of an insult. But to be inducting Jay-Z and Carole King in 2021? What the fuck is up with that. It’s an insult to Carole King, frankly. It’s like the Nobel Peace Prize now. A collective joke. But I digress…

Hear Joni Mitchell, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, Shawn Colvin, Norah Jones, Carly Simon, Phoebe Snow, Valerie Carter, Sarah McLachlan, Melissa Etheridge, and more!

I guess I could have come up with a better title for this playlist, but it was hard for me to describe the giant leap The Beatles took from Rubber Soul onward. It was gigantic. This was undoubtedly their most creative and experimental time as a musical group in their writing and in the studio. George Martin was no small part of that endeavor.

The photo above isn’t the best, but good photos of this show are very hard to come by. I was there, and this was undoubtedly one of the most amazing shows I’ve ever seen Linda Ronstadt perform. She was helped by friend Valerie Carter, who also opened for her. You don’t get the opportunity to see two great singers on stage together very often. I, luckily, did. (By the way, if you’re not familiar with Valerie Carter, you should make it a point to become familiar. We love her here in The Mermaid Lounge.)

We’re a day late, but today we are celebrating Heartbreakers bassist Ron Blair’s 72nd birthday (yesterday). He was an original founding member of the group who left, then came back after the death of Howie Epsein.

Their concert in 2002 after the release of The Last DJ, and turned out to be one of their strongest concerts ever.

12:00 p.m. Album of The Week: The Lost Tapes of Valerie Carter NEW!

Known primarily as a “session singer” and background vocalist to most (not all), Valerie Carter was so much more than that. Her debut album, Just a Stone’s Throw, was produced by Little Feat’s Lowell George in 1977. She went on to release several more widely acclaimed albums. She was not only a singer, but a songwriter. She wrote Cook With Honey, which was a hit for someone named Judy Collins.

Back in 1995, I saw Linda Ronstadt in concert at Boston’s Orpheum Theater. Valerie Carter was the opening act, and she was a perfect fit. Ronstadt was dead on that night as well. But the best part of the night was when they were on the stage together.

A recent discovery of recordings that were never released has been transformed into this week’s Album of The Week, The Lost Tapes. Musicians and vocalists like Lowell George, Fred Tackett, Bill Payne, Linda Ronstadt, Nicolette Larson appear in testament to her immense talent. Valerie Carter: The little girl with the big voice.

The little girl with the big voice fell under the radar, but not with her peers, who often sought her out to sing with them — including Jackson Browne, Little Feat, Linda Ronstadt, Don Henley and many others. She was also a long time member of James Taylor’s recording and touring band. Carter wrote the Judy Collins hit, Cook With Honey, and co-wrote Jackson Browne’s Love Needs a Heart. It is rumored that Steve Winwood’s song Valerie was inspired by her, as was Jackson Browne’s That Girl Could Sing.
