Last week we aired The Concert for Bandladesh, the very first “cause” concert and the brainchild of George Harrison and Ravi Shankar. Tonight we air No Nukes, a 1979 concert from MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy), a group consisting of Jackson Browne, Graham Nash, Bonnie Raitt, Harvey Wasserman, and John Hall. This activist group formed shortly after the Three Mile Island accident in March of 1979. Participating artists in the concerts included Jackson Browne, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Bonnie Raitt, Crosby, Stills and Nash, James Taylor, Carly Simon, Tom Petty, Jesse Colin Young, Gil Scott-Heron, Dan Fogelberg, Poco and more.

Yes, the work week has indeed begun once again, but the music is still playing here in The Mermaid Lounge. Dylan was just about 24 years old when he played the Royal Albert Hall in London. We have that performance here to kick off our programming today.

3:00 p.m. In the Spotlight: The Music of Valerie Carter

Valerie Carter began her singing career in coffeehouses as a teen, then became part of a trio called Howdy Moon. The band released one album, now fairly obscure. However, she wrote the song Cook With Honey, which became a hit for Judy Collins later and managed to meet Lowell George of Little Feat, who produced her next album and became her mentor until his death. He introduced her to Jackson Browne, James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt and so it began. Valerie Carter has an amazing voice and that girl can sing. Give a listen as we continue to celebrate Women’s (Musical) History Month.

Good morning Latin rock lovers and musicologists alike! Today we give Santana its due by putting Carlos Santana and his great band In the Spotlight. We also give you some ‘live’ Hot Tuna and the Women wrap up the programming later.

Guitar great Carlos Santana started his band in San Francisco back in 1966. They appeared for the first time at Woodstock in 1969. Santana has stood the test of time, but with many different lineups over the years. The one constant has been Carlos Santana. He recently reunited the original band on the road. We finally give Carlos Santana and his band the spotlight it deserves.

3:00 p.m. Hot Tuna Live at The Fillmore West, San Francisco, CA, March 4, 1988

This great blues-rock band was formed in 1969 by Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, former members of the Jefferson Airplane. Like Santana, they’ve had many musical lineups over the yeard, but Kaukonen and Casady have remained the band’s centerpieces. Today we have them live from The Fillmore.

7:00 p.m. The All-Girl Revue Five, Various Artists

We close out the evening’s programming with the women of music. I keep typing the ‘women of rock’ but that would be inaccurate because these female-based playlists offer such a diverse array of styles. This is actually a compilation of ‘live’ performances by Morrison from 1993 recorded December 12, 17 and 18 at both the Masonic Auditorium and The Mystic Theatre. Morrison is in fine R & B and blues mode here, and he brings along special guests to help him out, like Candy Dulfer, John Lee Hooker, Junior Wells, Jimmy Witherspoon, and Georgie Fame. Shana Morrison, his daughter is even along for the ride, handling the vocals on Beautiful Vision. It’s a veritable musical celebration.
