Saturday Brings Our ‘Ladies Day Out’ EP, Our Final Airing of “Full Moon Fever” by Tom Petty, and LIVE DEAD Later, October 23, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! It’s our usual busy Saturday here in The Mermaid Lounge as we turn the beginning of the day over to the women of music.

It’s ‘Ladies Day Out’ starting at 11:00 a.m.

Here’s Saturday’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Ladies Day Out: Various Artists

The ladies kick it all off today as we go through a magical musical journey of rock, country, soul, R & B. the blues, folk, and many other genres with Linda Ronstadt, Dusty Springfield, Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders), Aretha Franklin, Joni Mitchell, Laura Nyro, Bonnie Raitt, Cilla Black, Ann Peebles, The Supremes, Emmylou Harris, Maria Muldaur, Tracy Chapman, Eva Cassidy, Wendy Waldman, Lulu, Joan Baez, Melissa Etheridge, Dolly Parton, Valerie Carter, Carole King, Carla Thomas and more!

7:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Full Moon Fever by Tom Petty FINAL AIRING!

Today we bid a fond farewell to Tom Petty’s first solo album, although he did have help from many of his bandmates in both The Heartbreakers and in The Traveling Wilburys. Tomorrow, we’ll have a brand new selection for you.

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at The Cape Cod Coliseum, South Yarmouth, MA, October 27, 1979 NEW!

Another one from the vault from the world’s ultimate road jam band. This one’s from the Cape Cod Coliseum, a venue which many claims feels like it’s “in the middle of nowhere.” Funny, I don’t remember that. Then again, I don’t remember a lot about my trips to the Cape Cod Coliseum, to be honest.

Great day to tune us in, as always. I know I say that every day, but I also mean it every day. Hey, look, where else do you get to try something out for free. In my experience, new “experiences” always seem to require a credit card with the caveat that you can cancel at any time. Well, that’s not the way we do business around here. In fact, we’re not “doing business” around here. We’re playing music. Period. End of story.

Monday, Monday With Jackson Browne, Some Live Flying Burrito Brothers, and That Sweet Soul Sound, October 11, 2021

It’s Monday all over again, and someone here though it would be a good idea to run The Boston Marathon on Columbus Day and insult the Indigenous People a little more. Welcome to Boston. But nevertheless, we have some great music for you here in The Mermaid Lounge.

Here’s today’s line-up:

It’s Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge and That Brings the Extended-Play ORIGINAL Sixties Rotation Along With Our New Album of The Week From Valerie Carter, October 3, 2021

Good Morning, Music Aficionados everywhere! Here we are with another Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge and we’ve got our usual great programming situation going here.

Valerie Carter was way more than just a pretty face. As Jackson Browne sang of her, “That Girl Could Sing.” See for yourself today.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. Album of The Week: Just A Stone’s Throw Away by Valerie Carter NEW!

For those who do not know Valerie Carter, this album is a great way to start that process. It is so hard to categorize this album (her debut album). It’s a little bit folk, it’s a little bit country, it’s got some jazz moments and it’s a lot of R & B and funk. Carter has an amazing voice that can handle it all. Just A Stone’s Throw was produced by Lowell George (Little Feat), George Massenburg, and Maurice White (Earth, Wind & Fire). It featured musicians like Jackson Browne, Bob Glaub, Herb Pederson, John Sebastion and literally all of Little Feat. Her back-up singers included Linda Ronstadt, Deniece Williams, Herb Pederson, Lowell George, and Maurice White. Yeah, you’ve got all week to tune it in, but why wait?

3:00 p.m. The Original Sixties Rotation: Various Artists

We have two massive sixties rotation EP’s, and this is the first from the early sixties to the mid-sixties. There’s some overlap in artists from one to the other, but none of the songs overlap. In this EP, you’ll hear from a pretty eclectic line-up that includes Sonny & Cher, The Monkees, Mary Wells, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Dusty Springfield, Tommy James & The Shondells, The Beatles, Gerry & The Pacemakers, The Hollies, The Searchers, The Dave Clark Five, Petula Clark, Buddy Holly, The Kinks, Neil Diamond, The Band, The Yardbirds, The Temptations, The Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, Donovan, The Rolling Stones and more!

You cannot go wrong with #BecomeUngovernable Radio. We’re free. We ask for no personal information and no credit card is required because there are no “subscription” fees. We do not accept advertising, so there aren’t any commercials to interrupt the flow of music. This is a good day to join your friends from around the world, including Poland, Spain, Italy, Germany, Ireland, France, Portugal, The Russian Federation, and yes, the United States.

It’s A Beatles Kind of Day As We Close Out The Month; We’ve Also Got The Wilburys With the AOW, and Our ‘On The Map’ Playlist Later, Thursday, September 30, 2021

Good Morning, Beatles Lovers (and I, for one, am one)! It’s a Beatles kind of day here today in The Mermaid Lounge, and with good reason! Read on!

In spite of the rumors, The Beatles were still loose and enjoying each other at the end.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. The Beatles: The Let It Be Sessions

October is a big month. The 50th Anniversary 5-CD set of Let It Be will be released on October 15 replete with remixes (McCartney was unhappy with Phil Spector’s versions of some of the songs; and I agree), outtakes, alternate versions, and other goodies. Peter Jackson’s six-hour Let It Be documentary will be released on October 15 as well, with the companion book, The Beatles: Get Back, coming on October 12.

We’ve had this little gem for a while now and have played it before. We thought this would be an appropriate way to kick out the September jams as we get ready for October.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: The Traveling Wilburys, Volume One

Back with our next-to-last airing of this great album. October will also be Tom Petty Month here in The Mermaid Lounge. And you’ll hear plenty of the Wilburys as well during this time.

7:00 p.m. On The Map: Various Artists

We close out the day’s programming with our ‘On The Map’ playlist with cities, towns and locations in either the title, lyrics, or both. You’ll hear The Doors, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Asleep At The Wheel, Linda Ronstadt, Fats Domino, America, Bonnie Raitt, Little Feat, Paul Simon, Ray Charles, Neil Young, Tom Rush, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Irma Thomas & Marcia Ball, The Grateful Dead, James Taylor, CSNY, Scott McKenzie, and more!

We’re ready to rock n’ roll. Are you? Tune us in today as we close out September. You can join our friends from Germany, the UK, Spain, Italy, France, Denmark, Switerland, Japan, The Faroe Islands, Portugal, The Russian Federation, Canada, and the U.S. (Texas, Missouri, and New York this morning).

It’s Another Monday Here and The Beginning of the Week is All About Love and Loss, September 27, 2021

Good Morning, Music Lovers! Fall is in the air here this morning, and love is on our minds. That is to say, music about true love and heartbreak. I’m an expert at the second part. That’s why I don’t play in that arena anymore.

First comes love. Then comes heartbreak. We’ve got both ends of the spectrum today.

Here’s your Moan-Day line-up:

11:00 a.m. Nothing But Heartbreak: Various Artists

We start with the bad news first. That way we can end the day on a more upbeat note. You’ll hear laments from Elvis Presley, Carole King, James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, Tom Rush, Ray Charles, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Cat Stevens, The Pretenders, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The J. Geils Band, Guy Clark, Bob Dylan, Them, and many more!

3:00 p.m. True Love Always: Various Artists

This is a much longer and optimistic playlist. Funny how that works out, eh? I’ll have to do some digging into just why it’s the longer of the two. In this particular list you’ll hear The Mamas & The Papas, George Harrison, Valerie Carter, Linda Ronstadt, Mudcrutch, The Hollies, Joni Mitchell, The Lovin’ Spoonful, Jonathan Edwards, The Beatles, Neil Young, Basia, Van Morrison, Jackson Browne, Guy Clark, The Four Tops, and more!

10:00 p.m. LIVE DEAD! The Grateful Dead Live at Summer Jam, Watkins Glen, NY, July 28, 1973 NEW!

You’ll remember our Music Festival Wednesday this week we talked about Summer Jam in 1973 at Watkins Glen. The bands were The Allman Brothers Band, The Band, and The Grateful Dead. We’re still searching for a decent recording of the entire event, but we’ve got the next best thing. This is the most-attended music event in known history, and you got all three bands for a mere $10. Are you kidding me?

This recording of The Grateful Dead (soundboard, so decent quality) is the closest we come since both The Allman Brothers Band and The Band join them on stage toward the end of their set. We hope you enjoy, and we will continue our search.

Great day to tune us in for sure. We’ve got our usual busy Saturday on tap, yet we still give you more hours of wide Open Stream than programmed music. That’s what we’re all about. We don’t charge, ask for a subscription, or your personal information. No forms to fill out. We don’t run commercials, and our DJ’s not the mouthy kind. Give us a shot.

Today We’ve Got The Band on The King Biscuit Flower Hour, Our ‘For Foodies Only’ Playlist, and Joni Mitchell’s Album of The Week, Thursday, September 16, 2021

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’ve passed midweek and we’ve got some really cool music for you all today, including The Band’s performance for The King Biscuit Flower Hour.

From Bob Dylan’s back-up band to one of the most important and influential acts in popular music.

Here’s today’s line-up:

11:00 a.m. The Band Live at The Carter Baron Amphitheatre, Washington, D.C. and Broadcast Live on The King Biscuit Flower Hour, July 17, 1976

It didn’t take long for The Band to become one of my favorites, and they have remained in my top three bands of all time today. They started as Bob Dylan’s back-up band but became one of the most important and influential bands in popular music history. This is also a tip of the hat to the nationally-syndicated King Biscuit Flower Hour which brought some of the best bands in history into our living rooms.

3:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Blue by Joni Mitchell

This is our second-to-last airing of one of the pivotal albums in popular music, which turned fifty in June of this year. The final airing will be on Saturday. On Sunday when you roll out of bed, we’ll have a brand new album for you, so get Blue in while you can!

7:00 p.m. For Foodies Only: Various Artists

One of the most fun sets we’ve put together. Songs with food and drink used in the title or lyrics…some of the songs are not even about either of those things, but it matters not. It’s all about the music from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, the Strawberry Alarm Clock, John Cougar Mellencamp, Fats Domino, Bob Dylan, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Emmylou Harris, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Steely Dan, Sam & Dave, Little Feat, Van Morrison, Led Zeppelin, Don McLean, and many more!

Don’t know what the weather’s like where you are, but it’s raining here. In The Mermaid Lounge, it’s raining music 24/7 at absolutely no cost to you. Ever. No commercials either. And no DJ’s who like the sound of their own voice.
