We Bring Back ‘What’s In a Name,’ Then It’s Dylan & The Heartbreakers Live, and a Jimmy Cliff ‘Spotlight,’ Thursday, May 29, 2025

We’re headed for the weekend with a great lineup, including the return of our ‘What’s In a Name’ EP after a hiatus. What follows is even better!

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. What’s In a Name: Various Artists

We’re back with songs about people, some real, some imagined. You’ll hear Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Them, Janis Joplin, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beach Boys, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Donovan, Steve Winwood, Bonnie Raitt, Shawn Colvin, Carly Simon, Warren Zevon, Linda Ronstadt, Laura Nyro, Bobbie Gentry, The Kinks, Three Dog Night, The Association, Joni Mitchell, Badfinger, Steely Dan, Chi Coltrane, Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, James Taylor, Tony Joe White, and more!

4:00 p.m. Bob Dylan with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Live at Rich Stadium, Orchard Park, NY, July 4, 1986

Two unbelievably great acts together on one stage on Dylan’s True Confessions tour. It was a thing of beauty.

8:00 p.m. In The Spotlight: The Music of Jimmy Cliff

Jimmy Cliff is the stuff of legends. He’s a reggae, ska, rocksteady and soul singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, and the only living reggae musician to ever hold The Order of Merit. Bob Dylan called his song Vietnam the best protest song he’d ever heard. If you don’t know Jimmy Cliff, you can learn more about him here. And you can tune him in tonight!

We’re here. We’re free. We don’t run advertising. And we’re on 24/7. What could be better. And no, you can’t build personal playlists, but I say that’s not radio. This is radio, except we don’t play the same hundred songs over, and over, and over. See for yourselves.

Our ‘What’s In a Name’ EP, Bob Marley and ‘Live’ Creedence are on the Bill for Wednesday, October 4, 2023

Good morning, music lovers and welcome to midweek. Everything from here is heading toward the weekend, and we’ve got some great music to help get you there!

9:00 a.m. What’s In a Name: Various Artists

This is a fun one: Songs with names in the title, lyrics or both. 4:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Bob Marley

Bob Marley comes through The Mermaid Lounge for a second spin as this week’s featured singer-songwriter.

Living is Easy on Sunday With Our New AOW From Jimmy Buffett and the ‘What’s In a Name’ Multi-Artist EP, September 3, 2023

Good morning, music lovers! It’s Sunday in The Mermaid Lounge and the living is easy with our brand new AOW from Jimmy Buffett (yes, this was on the list before his sad passing) and our ‘What’s In a Name’ multi-artist EP starting mid-afternoon.

Here’s your musical lineup:

Affectionately known as the Mayor of Margaritaville, Jimmy Buffett passed away on September 1. There was a lot of mystery surrounding his health prior to this, but it is now known that he passed form Merkel cell carcinoma, a rare form of skin cancer. Jimmy Buffett was a hell of a ride. If you’ve ever seen him ‘live’ you know his shows were a blast. He was a guy who took music seriously, but had a good time doing it and his ‘Parrotheads’ did as well.

I saw him at Fenway Park in Boston in the early 2000’s, the first time I’d ever seen a musical act at Fenway. It was unbelievable. I took a Buffett shamer with me to the show. Even he had a blast and confessed he went out and bought this very album after. This is as good an album as anyone has released. There isn’t a song we don’t like, and it was on our list from the beginning. I moved it up. Circumstances called for that.

3:00 p.m. What’s In a Name: Various Artists

A fun EP here with songs including names in the title, lyrics or both. Some people are real. Some people are not. You’ll hear Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Them, Janis Joplin, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beach Boys, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Donovan, Steve Winwood, Bonnie Raitt, Shawn Colvin, Carly Simon, Warren Zevon, Laura Nyro, Bobbie Gentry, The Kinks, Three Dog Night, The Association, Joni Mitchell, Badfinger, Linda Ronstadt, Steely Dan, Chi Coltrane, Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, James Taylor, Tony Joe White and more!

Midweek Brings Our ‘What’s In a Name’ EP, Buddy Holly as Our Singer-Songwriter and Our ‘Money, Honey’ Playlist Later, Wednesday, August 2, 2023

Good morning, musicologists! We’ve got a great midweek lineup today starting with our ‘What’s In a Name’ EP! But there’s more, so read on for details!

Here’s your midweek lineup:

9:00 a.m. What’s In a Name: Various Artists

What’s in a name? Some people say a lot. Others say names mean nothing. But the music world has certainly made plenty of music about names. You’ll hear Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Them, Janis Joplin, Simon & Garfunkel, Steve Winwood, Bonnie Raitt, Shawn Colvin, Carly Simon, Warren Zevon, Laura Nyro, Bobbie Gentry, the Kinks, Three Dog Night, The Association, Joni Mitchell, Badfinger, Linda Ronstadt, Steely Dan, Chi Coltrane, Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, James Tayor, Tony Joe White and more!

4:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Buddy Holly

Buddy Holly is back for another spin as our featured singer-songwriter for this week.

8:00 p.m. Money, Honey: Various Artists

We close out the programming with songs about money, lots of it or the lack of it, from Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Guess Who, Randy Newman, Barrett Strong, The Kinks, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Tom Waits, The Byrds, Slim Harpo, J.J. Cale, J. Geils Band, Joni Mitchell, Pink Floyd, Albert King and more!

We’re at midweek and it’s all downhill to the weekend from here. We’ve got some great stuff lined up to help get you there. We’re on 24/7, totally free of charge, and without commercial interruption.

We Start a New Month With Our ‘What’s in A Name’ EP, Bob Dylan’s Final AOW Spin, and the Multi-Faceted Jeff Lynne as Our Featured Singer-Songwriter, Saturday, July 1, 2023

Good morning, musicologists, and welcome to the dog days of summer here in The Mermaid Lounge! We kick off a new month in fine form today. Read on for details!

Here’s your musical lineup:

9:00 a.m. What’s in a Name: Various Artists

One of our newer EP’s is airing this morning. We just introduced this one last month, and you’ll hear Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Them, Janis Joplin, The Beach Boys, Simon & Garfunkel, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Donovan, Steve Winwood, Bonnie Raitt, Shawn Colvin, Carly Simon, Warren Zevon, Laura Nyro, Bobbie Gentry, The Kinks, Three Dog Night, The Association, Joni Mitchell, Badfinger, Linda Ronstadt, Steely Dan, Chi Coltrane, Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, James Taylor, Tony Joe White and more!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: Nashville Skyline by Bob Dylan FINAL AIRING!

We say farewell to Bob Dylan’s Nashville Skyline today, undoubtedly one of his best albums ever. Tomorrow, we’ll have a brand new selection for you!

8:00 p.m. Singer-Songwriter Series: The Music of Jeff Lynne NEW!

Here’s a guy who doesn’t get the attention he should. Most people know him as the leader of Electric Light Orchestra, but Jeff Lynne is more than that. He’s one of the most prolific singer-songwriters on the planet. Before ELO, there was a sixties band called The Move, which recorded and released the original version of Do Ya. He was a founding member of The Traveling Wilburys. And finally, he’s a record producer who worked with both George Harrison and Tom Petty over his long career. Tonight we introduce him as this week’s featured singer-songwriter.

For most people it’s a long weekend where we’ll celebrate our alleged freedom (although all I see from the GOP are rights being rolled back). All that propaganda aside, it’s absolutely not propaganda that we play the best music on the planet totally free with no commercial interruption on a 24/7 schedule. Give us a shot.

We Slide Toward The Weekend With Our ‘What’s In a Name’ EP, our Album of The Week, and a Tribute to Bob Marley, Thursday, May 12, 2022

Good Morning, Musicologists! We’ve got a great day of programming on tap for you folks today, including our ‘What’s In A Name’ EP which, in fact, we here in the Lounge sometimes forget is an EP.

Tonight we give you some live Wailers in memory of the great Bob Marley.

Here’s today’s musical landscape:

10:00 a.m. What’s In A Name: Various Artists

I confess we often forget this one, but it’s a fun one. Songs with names in them…in the title, lyrics, or both! You’ll hear from The Turtles, The Beatles, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Simon & Garfunkel, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, Lou Reed, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Rod Stewart, Linda Ronstadt, Steely Dan, Buddy Holly, CSNY, Dolly Parton, Carly Simon, Tony Joe White, Warren Zevon, Emmylou Harris, The Allman Brothers Band, Laura Nyro, Three Dog Night, Shawn Colvin, Chuck Berry, James Taylor, Steve Winwood, and more!

4:00 p.m. Album of The Week: External Combustion by Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs

The next-to-last airing of The Dirty Knobs’ great new album, very Pettyesque in fact, and most welcome. It makes us yearn for yesteryear. But I digress. Get on it now because we’ll have a brand new one for you on Sunday. Final airing on Saturday. Time TBD.

7:00 p.m. Bob Marley & The Wailers Live at The Santa Barbara County Bowl, November 25, 1979

It’s hard to believe that Bob Marley has been gone for 41 years, but he has. He passed on May 11, 1979. Tonight, we pay tribute to the man and the band that put Reggae on the map for so many people.

Here we are again. We have our usual collection of worldwide listeners this morning from Belgium, Spain, Greece, Germany, the UK, France, Portugal, Russian Federation, Faroe Islands, Australia, and points beyond. Get on the map, people. You have no idea what you’re missing until you try it.
